It could have been an internal flaw within the input shaft, not completely unheard of. You'll never hear Eaton admit that though.

I wouldn't think it would have made it as long as it did if that were the case. I've driven it aggressively more than once and I'm thinking it can only take so much for so long. I seen one guy on a forum recommended changing the input when changing the clutch because he's seen a few break with a strong motor.

To bad that happened. I know that there is not a good time for it to go out, but at least you were close to home. Also, the crack could have happened before you bought the truck. Good luck with it.

That's possible but I've driven it aggressively more than once and I'm thinking it eventually got the best of it. I'm very thankful it happened so close to home because the day before I was 500 miles away. I figured I would have to go through the trans within the next few yrs due to mileage it has 1.1 million on it so it has some wear and I'm sure plenty of abuse by me and several others over the years.

This is a text book example of shock load. It was shock loaded in the past and that most likely cracked that input shaft. It happens. I have repaired many twisted and broken input shafts, main shafts, thru shafts and pinion shafts for this very reason. Those guys that drag race loaded trucks use a lot of stock parts but they also use a lot of cryogenic treated shafts even though some wont admit it. There are a few of those trucks sponsored by a well known gear remanufacturer and they tell me they are constantly sending them gear parts to replace broken ones.

I agree. I've been trying to think back to what the worst thing I could of done to it as far as shock loading, and I remember I was passing a slow truck up a steep hill in a passing lane about 2-3 weeks before this happened and I was at wot and I lifted just long enough to shift and put it back on the floor probably before the boost even dropped. was trying not to lose momentum. I'm thinking that was probably the most shock load it could have received and likely what led to this, and being in a high gear the truck didn't twist or flex to cushion the shock, like it would in a lower gear. Doing the same in a lower gear would allow truck to twist and cushion shock load to some degree. I've seen the same type failure in Cummins pickups making good power at wot when the torque converter locks. I knew shifting and getting back on it that fast obviously wasn't good, but I figured with stock power levels it would take some abuse, but the truck is pretty strong it's 530hp/1850 tq.

Hi Chase , just got around to watching your video. Looks awful . That input shaft failing reeked havoc on everything , that bulletin enlightened me on a lot. Hope you get it fixed soon.

Yep, evidently if you shift it like a racecar and you got a fairly stout motor you can achieve racecar type results 😂 I got it going just haven't gotten around to getting the video edited yet. I hate it broke, but at 1.1 million miles it had some wear for sure, and it's days was probably numbered. Sometimes if you split 6th gear when you flipped the splitter back to low to go to second gear on high side it would sometimes down shift from 7th back to 6th when you were getting ready to shift to 8th and it would make a hard bang and jerk, I'm sure that didn't help it any 😂. I learned after it done that a few times when I got the truck either make sure it was in neutral for that split or just don't split that gear. It never done it in the other 3 splittable gears which I thought was weird if it was a splitter problem, idk maybe that gear had some wear, but the new one seems to be working good so far...

@@LifeWithChase yes 1.1 million is a lot of miles, you where riding a old horse like it was a young one, hope you getting going soon. Break downs like that are engraved your mind forever. Thanks a lot for sharing with you have found out on input shaft failure.

your spinning caused it, there is no light throttle, its the torque shock load, good news is you will loose a rearend from it also, volvo makes a special tool to adjust the clutch in these trucks. input shafts and gear trains are designed to break at certain points, they do destructive testing, thats where all the pictures and failures are from. shock loads are dumping the clutch or tires grabbing during spinning, not engine torque or jake braking,

Why was he kept on driving it, when he heard grinding and trans coming apart? Chase made it worst!

If pulling out of a shipper empty and the tires spinning a bit while the front axle climbs on the pavement in 1st gear at 800-900 RPM did this it's a complete piece of garbage. I've seen idiots pulling tree stumps and the back tires hopping on pavement empty and didn't break anything, and in low gear an axle or drive shaft is much more likely to break than an input shaft and Volvo uses a self adjusting clutch, but the new bell housing has a place plenty big for a standard wrench it turns out.

Chase, if you're pulling heavy all the time, you should swap out the ring & pinion to 3.70:1 ratio.

HA, I was telling the screen , the air line, the air line. Well done. A lot done in a short period of time. Sounds like a more durable shaft is needed.

1 million miles sounds like a lot but for a tractor, I'm thinking not so much for many that do that in under 8 years. I'm thinking a new truck over 10 years is a minimum of $25K a year just for the truck, never mind maintenance .
@LifeWithChase

Yes, the fleets put 2 yrs in 1 with team driving. They usually keep them 500k and sell them. That's when the warranty usually runs out. It's common to see 3-4 yr old trucks with 500k miles. Depreciation is horrible on a new truck and they break to, sometimes much more than the older ones. Seems to be constant problems with the new emissions compliant engines and auto transmissions and both are extremely expensive to repair.

I wonder if you didn't have a hydraulic clutch you could have felt the difference before the Carnage.

I don't know. If I had known what the symptoms were when I noticed that the clutch didn't want to release right before it broke I might could have saved lots of damage.
