Highly recommend when moving into a new place, do a full walk thru and take pictures of practically everything (specifically ‘damage’ or in this case paint drips) this can be a life saver!

The place I'm in now gave us a sheet of paper to write down all of the things that were damaged before we moved in and they have that paper in our file so they can cross reference it when we move out and figure out what we did vs didn't do

That's not quite how it works lol! You have to show what damages you are charging them for and you only take the cost of the damages out of their deposit (normal wear and tear excluded.) You do not automatically keep the entire deposit if there is something damaged (or one tiny little thing using your example) unless it costs that amount to replace/ repair it :)

Feel ya on the ‘not getting blamed for things I didn’t do’. Right before we moved out, I sent a… strongly worded email about the last four things that maintenance hadn’t fixed yet, including our sink, told them why the initial issue wasn’t our fault, as well as that I saved the automatic-reply emails I got from the office when requesting replacements of our front door, patio door, and a closet door. We were moving out early for VERY good reason and I made sure they knew it. And despite breaking the lease, we paid a grand total of… $25 when we left 😂

I once rented a brand new house for 18 months. We had 16 foot vaulted ceilings in the entry way. I treated that house like my own. The only part of the deposit they kept was $40 to take down a spider web at the top of the tallest part of the ceiling ( I didn't own a ladder tall enough). 🙄 I have never heard of anyone ever getting 100% back. Good on getting all of yours back!🤞

I got extra back from my landlord when I moved out. When I moved out I hired a cleaning service and I rented a rug cleaner. I wanted to make sure the place was very cleaned when I left. I asked if he wanted to do a walkthrough. He didn't. He just said he would send the deposit back. He was late sending it back. When he did send it, he added an extra $100 to it for him being late.
