Removing NASTY mildew smell from your car's interior- Steps, products and tips!

In this video I share with you my technique and products used in how I approach removing STRONG mildew smells from this cars Interior. The headliner drain got clogged and leaked all down the interior carpets and the smell has just gotten stronger. The customer fixed the leak and removed the stagnant water but used baking soda to no avail to remove the odor. So we'll break out some of the big guns to try to see what we can do.
Disclaimer: while this can help some smells are too aggressive and require pulling seats and carpets/pads out to clean OR possibly replacing the carpet if it's too severe.

Madame, again not only a great job on your videos but nicely taught chemical lesson on oxygen and hydrogen mix that I have also told some of my customers who on their own have purchased ozone generator to keep their vehicles without smoke odor and have used products on their own on their carpets. One of the things I had to explain to 2 of them was high school class on acidic mixes and since they were into science they understood everything I explained. You explained it better and faster than me.👏😘 I have used several times the ozone generator and on my first try I learned about changing the cabin filter from a friend who has a shop and fixes vehicles A/C because still had a bit of smoke odor. So everytime a customer wants me to do odor elimination I tell them to purchase a cabin filter first either at Autozone or Advanced Auto unless I have it scheduled at least in two weeks, so I can order it cheaper throughout providers like Amazon or others depending on the vehicle make and model for less than $10 and even shipping. If they are carbon filters almost reach $20😉 I have in stock 3 for some clients because on their maintenance plan with me they want that service every 3 months. One of the things I do with my ozone generator is open a bit the front left window and a bit the right back window just the amount of exactly the electrical power cord but on the back window a little bit less. Ughhhh Toyota has this AMAZING design where the sun roof drain holes drain under the front tires. But if that clogs, the water backs up into the car, under the carpet, directly into the padding. You wouldn't even notice the leak until your carpet is soaked. I just bought a car, guy had heavy duty plastic mats down over the carpet, you couldn't tell the carpet was even wet... I didnt think getting the smell out would be so difficult. So far I've removed the carpet under the driver and passenger sides, put 2 full lbs of baking soda down, hit the carpet with a tornador and heavy duty carpet cleaner, soaked it all up with a shop vac last night. This morning, small is still there. Ughhhh. I think imma have to remove the seats, and the carpet, then remove all the padding, then clean it throughout out of the car, and perhaps clean the metal under the carpet to get the mildew out..... YAY. I did leave the car on for 2 hours last night with the fans blasting on full heat on the floor to get the moisture up and out of the car, it must have been wet for about a month like that. Toyota this was a DUMB design, why put the drain overflows UNDER The carpet!!!!

Hey Chelsea with some vehicles that you are using ozone generator on you can also if able run cord (extension) through trunk close rear armrest if pass through to trunk and close all windows with ozone gen on front arm rest. this seals in more ozone if you don't want to leave window cracked open (crack trunk) just a suggestion

It's actually better to have a fresh supply of air coming in as most industrial ozone generators pipe it in. While theirs is sealed off and mine isn't it still is potent enough to work but you don't want to seal it off completely with my style of generator as for it to convert the O2 to O3 it needs fresh air to do so.

Hey sis great video! i was wondering would it be ok to reverse the order and do the ozone treatment first and then do the shampooing? Also I heard you should just put on recirculate not A/C with it while using the ozone. thoughts?

I always try to remove as much soiling and nicotine as possible as well as steam cleaning before hand in case dirt, etc. limit the ozone from making contact with the fibers and padding. When you shampoo you might possibly reactivate old stains or nicotine and then you have to do a repeat treatment for those reactivated stains/odors. So that's why I clean first, let dry then do ozone treatment. That's when I'll do interior first and run the heat on the interior while I was the exterior. By the time I'm done on the outside the inside is 95-100% dry

I had a similar problem with my car, sunroof leaked and my carpets were soaked. I vacuumed up all the water, steam cleaned it and used ozone treatment (a similar machine as yours), however the smell is still there. It was fine for a bit after the ozone, but the smell came back. Do you recommend I just bring it to a detailer and see what they can do? I feel like the mildew is growing underneath the carpets and I'm afraid I might have to get the whole carpet lifted up and cleaned out. This happened in the winter of 2020, so it hard even more difficult with the cold weather.

The water might be below the padding so you might want to find one who can remove seats and carpets to examine the padding and base to see if the issue of the odor is below the carpet. You could also try a chloring dioxide treatment overnight to see if that helps. One like bioshocker auto.

Did you find the baking soda stained the carpets? I've never found baking soda to help with smells, it's an odd urban legend. Buying a minivan from a family of 4 kids and 3 dogs and you can guess what the car smells like, wish me luck

It didn't stain it but it did leave a lot of residue. Shampooing removed it but in some spots when the water dried there was baking soda that wicked to the surface and had to be vacuumed up. It's like sand and just needs vacuumed but may never fully come up.
