As I already installed the de-hum kit from HandHeld Legend, there was still some amount of noticeable hum. I also have the CleanAmp and 1 watt speaker too. After the Helder's Tech GBA Power Cleaner, the hum/hiss did got reduced, but not all of it. Still some coming from the speaker, but definitely much cleaner than before.

Mine is still has a noticeably loud hissing noise when sound is being emitted through the speaker. Also the volume doesn't ramp up and down with any consistency

Great video! Was intrigued by both the helder mod & funnyplaying speaker so this answered my questions, thankQ bernard 💖

thanks for the info... i wasnt sure how effective the Helder power cleaning mod would be combined with the Funny Playing V2 screen... your video was super helpful! thanks!

There is an argument that the operational squeaks, squeals and background noise are part of the GameBoy's character and charm. I imagine reproducing these glitchy sounds is something that emulators can't do accurately, therefore it makes the experience more authentic. I agree with installing an amp and replacing the speaker with a 2 watt version. But as for the dehum and dehiss, I'm quite happy to keep it.

Thanks very much for this video. It seems that the power cleaner works quite nicely!

I had one of my GBA with the IPS screen and that had horrible sound (before I made the flex pcb) and tried more filtering all over the place and what I found worked was the CP2 to a higher capacity. Increasing the capacity for the CP4 cap will also help with noise since that is what is filtering the audio to the speaker. Try those 2 capacitor replacements, 220uf is a good start for both of them.

I ordered some 220uFs for CP2, I'll test em on CP4 as well. I tried the GBA Power Cleaner + a 470uF 6.3V cap from ground to leg 1 of the audio amp chip (right above cp4) and it actually added buzz. Without the power cleaner it used to remove some buzz, kinda interesting. Thanks again for all your insight!!

Thanks for running through all of these - curious if you're going to try one with a CleanAmp v1.1 or any other amp. Just did one of these builds using Helder's Cleaner and the FP speaker blows out past mid-volume.
@berndog4 жыл бұрын
Nah personally I don’t need the GBA to be any louder, I just like less noise. The clear GBA in the video had the retromodding amp but honestly I might remove it haha. Remember the FP one is only rated for .6W so you need the 1W speaker for the amp mod. Pretty sure some vendors warn this too

do you happen to know if there are any sound mod to reduce noise for Gameboy Micro?
@jammyzheng1314 жыл бұрын
I used a dsi specker that i salvage from my broken dsi. It give a really clear sound with not much different in the volume.

Hey friend, thanks for the wonderful video! I have a few questions - I am planning to do an audio mod on an IPS screen (with usb c battery mod) GBA soon, and this has been really helpful! You mentioned the helder pcb is only part of the Dehum/Dehiss set up - which parts is it missing? My impression is that the Dehum/Dehiss set should almost illuminate the background noises, but it still sounded pretty present even with the Helder pcb (as best I can tell). I would be really interested in a comparison with the full retrosix Dehum/Dehiss, or any insights you might have : ) Many thanks! Keep up the amazing work 💕

The other components missing from the dehum dehiss kit using only Helder's GBA Power Cleaner is the 680uF capacitor on CP1 and another one going from S1 on the power rail to another pin on the headphone jack. Keep in mind that in my videos I did not use a USB-C mod, that would add additional noise. Also, if you haven't checked it out, I have a part 2 to this video on my channel.

I was curious how it would hear without a recap but with the helder power cleaner
@berndog4 жыл бұрын
I have a part 2 video on my channel that has the power cleaner with the stock capacitor configurations. power cleaner does most of the work honestly. the recap kinda helps get the volume back to normal

Dude why my gameboy advance power switch sometimes doesn't turn on? I replace the original power switch with a new one but it turns on sometimes and sometimes don't! 🤦♂️

Watch my video about cleaning your power switch. Also check that resistor R13 is not missing.

Berndawg, hahaha. Okay. What is the impact on the Headphone jack? Is it as distinguishable?
@berndog4 жыл бұрын
The speaker doesn't affect the headphone jack, but the capacitors and GBA Power Cleaner do. It removes some of the noise that you mainly hear in silent parts, like after powering up with no game installed, or in the pause in the tetris intro. At the end of the day the GBA doesnt sound very good lol
