Dang the 'option' click, to make automation item and command dragging to duplicate, is an amazing tip. I prefer automating to splitting, and this will save me loads of time. Thanks Kenny

I initially downloaded Reaper as a means to an end to record my guitar, but over the last few months I've become absolutely obsessed with production/mixing. It's totally changed the way I approach music, I try to arrange songs now, not just riffs and melodies.

Thank you Kenny for all your work! I started with Audacity first and had to upgrade because of all the missing tools. I picked Reaper and learned it from scratch with your tutorials. I am more than happy to record, repair, mix and whatever I want to do with this DAW. I was pretty lost when I started...thought I would never understand the complexity of it, but now I don`t look back where I came from. THANK YOU!

Cant wait for this one! One thing I've done, is close down all unnecessary programs i may have running in the background. I use the task manager to see what programs are in use and are robbing cpu power and then end task those. I've gotten rid of 99% of amd clicks & pops ive had problems with.

It's amazing how much introduced noise can be found within vox recordings, especially if one's computer isn't really beefy as far as the processor and RAM goes, AND if you're running a bunch of things you don't need to / shouldn't be like you said. Smart to have task manager up (on PC only? Does Mac have a similar app?) to monitor activity and usage while trying to get clean recordings!

Absolutely love this Kenny, thank you! As soon as I saw it coming up in the sub box, I smashed the notify me button hahaha It's one thing to know how to use plugins to fix all these sorts of issues for efficient workflows, but it's just so cool (and/or nerdy) to learn all these little tricks for how to do things within REAPER. I cannot believe there's a way to be able to do things like splitting while just hovering the mouse and using a shortcut, but am not surprised - REAPER lets you do so dang much! hahaha

Interesting method ! I tend to prefer the pre-FX volume automation to the splits, because the first preserves the items and it avoids having to tweak the fades settings (I uses very short fades). Using splits also creates multiple items, with split points not on grid, which can be issue in a musical context when you need to snap items to grid, but the method can be more relevant for sound design or podcast editing, where you don't have to snap to grid.

As far as I know, splitting is nondestructive, which means that Reaper doesn't create new files in the audio folder. It's just an internal reference to the source file. You still have only 1 source file. You get (a) new file(s) only if you glue items.
@Tokolele
@Tokolele 7 ай бұрын
@@fullmixstudio4585 I ued the wrong word. I know splitting is non destructive, but it creates new items, which can be an issue. I simply don't like the second method !

1. Avoiding automation as far as possible. But for mixing, the automation usually is necessary, so 2. Unselecting the option "Move automation with items". Saves from a lot of trouble when rearranging items.
@Tokolele
@Tokolele 7 ай бұрын
@@SamiJumppanen I tend to avoid volume automations in producing/editing context, but pre-FX volume automation is eventually equivalent to clip gain editing. And automation item option can prevent from splitting multiple items (which I try to avoid except for musical purposes). And yes, disabling move automation with items can be very convenient. I have à shortcut to toggle it on/off, cos it can be useful too when duplicating parts with their automations.

What a great video, all these shortcuts are dope. Love the one with Option for automations, this will save me tons of time, instead of doing clip gain by spliting items, will just do this. But definitely the S shortcut under mouse cursor is fire ! Thank you so much. Will you ever do a shortcut list mouse pad someday ? Or even a pdf file that recap all these type of tips and tricks ? Would definitely buy one.

Hello, thank you for your work and share you skills and tricks everydays, i love your videos! I learned very much with them. I have a following question: If a click or a pop occurs in the middle of an item, not at the beginning or the end as shown, what can be done? Should the same steps be followed as in the video? Thank you!
@Laneth
@Laneth 7 ай бұрын
(Just my initial thoughts here, not an authority at all haha) Short of re-recording the take, you *could* zoom right in on the click/pop in the middle of the item and see if you can split & fade narrowly enough to not have a noticeable edit sound, but it's likely you're going to hear the edits regardless. Clicks within items often get missed by de-click plugins too, because they aren't isolated enough from the other frequencies to be clearly 'heard' by the plugin to be actioned. You could look into "spectral edits" - either directly within REAPER's spectral view (View menu → Peaks Display Settings → Spectrogram / Spectrogram + Peaks) or you could use a repair tool like iZotope's RX spectral edits to find the click within the 'heat map' of the frequency range and try to cut just that section out, without splitting apart the whole item/waveform. 🤔Guess it just depends on how much work you're wanting to do to fix things if you cannot re-record.

Though I can rely on these methods for some precise cases, I would rather use some kind of delickr plugins, like Acon Digital one, being able to batch adjust the reduction on the whole track, and having the reduction done automatically without item splitting is a huge time saver, and doesn't clutter the arrange view, which is appreciable. 😉And it works pretty nicely even if in the middle of sustain vocal notes, where splitting (to -ind) would be a bit much, and regular volume automation more audible.

Great video as usual Kenny. Would it be worth glueing split and cleaned up items together when done so as to avoid any risk of them getting moved individually by accident?
@Laneth
@Laneth 7 ай бұрын
You could also select the items and use the default "group items" action (G is the shortcut I believe, with U ungrouping them) if you don't want new WAV files created by gluing items :)

@Reapermania You're right and its silly but early on in the steep Reaper learning curve I seemed to fixate on glueing as the cast iron way of putting things / items back together so no risk of accidentally ungrouping/unlocking etc. And so I never picked those options up as a habit because got burned a few times with items I'd left highlighted getting moved because they were off screen.

The typical scenario where I end up having clicks is when I'm trying to put seamlessly together two takes/tracks, in that case would you still tackle it as shown in the video? Because when I use crossfade in such a way the final result doesn't have clicks anymore but it still has some weird sounding drop and increase in volume
@SamiJumppanen
@SamiJumppanen 7 ай бұрын
Experiment with the fade time and slope types. And also note it's not always necessary to make a crossfade. Overlapping items without fade is also possible. Depends on the material. For example a take of strings, chords. The last chord plays over the loop border. No prob, let it be and drag a copy over the first one.

It's a good trick but is, it seems, the pony only has the one. What about the other sibilant stuff? Your explanation of razor editing with Pre FX volume automation to address a variety of pops, clicks, chs, esses etc. works rather better and won't require a pass for each type of sound.

It would be helpful if screen shots of Actions included the Command ID column... thus, additions to the list, or changes in descriptions can be clarified. In this case, with the current release, I don't have a "Split item under mouse cursor" without additional verbiage; there are now six item variants. Does anyone know which of the six corresponds to the recommendation? [Perhaps Command ID 40746 - it appears the oldest... this seems to work WHEN Snap Disabled.]

You can find "de-click" plugins, either standalone or part of plugin 'suites', that you can use to tackle clicks and pops, though like anything in that way they aren't infallible. Kenny's whole channel is dedicated to showing what can be done with stock REAPER plugins or processes/actions, and personally I like to learn the manual process like this to better understand what is going on behind the scenes with the plugins and automations that we might employ later on.
