Safety is the first thing. Never go under a suspended load as was done on this video. No seat belt while driving the forklift. Small things that can get you hurt. The engine is second to safety.

There is no “certification”. I have been yanking engines off of every Boeing airframe for a long time for a major airline. These are people that wish they worked at the airlines…or can’t.

They need an inspector because of the American Airlines Flight 191 DC-10 crash in Chicago when the airline had devised a labor saving engine extraction method of using a forklift to hold the engine. That led to the biggest air disaster in US history 273 deaths, including 2 on the ground

I work at Delta…there are zero inspectors involved in the REMOVAL of an engine, not “extraction”. Inspectors buy off the mount bolt torque and some other stuff. They couldn’t care less about the removal. You clearly aren’t a mechanic.

Interesting behind-the-scenes maintenance routine. My only issue: When the nature of the action taking place is clearly visible and intuitive to the viewer, there is no reason to oversell the scene with tropes such as "One mistake and...". "Nine thousand pounds of engine are now suspended in midair...". Not any more than when attached by bolts. The engine is suspended in "midair" by a different means but, to a non-engineer, it was hanging just as precariously on four bolts before disassembly. "...any mistake (dramatic pause) could be disastrous". "Any" mistake? Then, any mistake while driving at high speeds on a highway can be disastrous also. True, but not deserving of a drum roll. The imprecise language and dramatic delivery of the narration used on many videos, while designed to create tension and hold interest, have become so trite and predictable, that the technique often causes more irritation and distraction for me.

Very dumb how they don't have a hydraulic lift than can square level with the engine and lift up to it and bring it back down with out the whole chain hoist drama they show.

Exactly what I thought. The cradle they used to sit the engine on..would be perfect if it had some hydraulic legs that would raise it up to hold the engine in place....undo the bolts...and then just lower it back down ready to be picked up by the fork lift.

Those are called Cobra stands. I have removed and replaced HUNDREDS of engines this way….never seen it done any other way with the exception of using come alongs that are pneumatic powered.
