Removing Valve Springs Using HARBOR FREIGHT Compressor

Had some trouble with the harbor freight valve spring compressor while removing the valve springs on my 60's model Massey Ferguson TO35 tractor with the z134 continental engine. Just thought I'd share a quick video of it with you.
This tool is no longer available at harbor freight (to my knowledge)

BC Driven HaHaHa my car is a 4 door coupe. Most in the Us is the same in Canada 🇨🇦 Milk used to be available in bags a long time ago but was short lived. Now back to cartons just like Walmart. 👍😎all the best to you! Stay safe!

I bought this and used it. Just this week i put valve stem seals on my 350 chevy. Had to repair this thing every few springs. It bends on the part that pushes down the springs. Easy to squeeze back but you will see visible signs of the soft metal mashing up in that same area. It will get 16 springs off and on if you’re careful with it but mine is going in the trash now. It served its purpose

Its definitely priced as a disposable tool but I think it'll hang around a while longer. Ive actually used mine again for another 4 cyl head and its still kicking. Once you get the hang of it its a handy little tool to keep around.

Great video, very helpful. I am working on a 1979 Granada 250ci inline 6. I couldn't get the two semicircle keepers out, because there was a bowl-shaped retainer that snugged against them. When I depressed the valve spring, the retainer was still tightly hugging the keepers so I couldn't get them out. So before depressing the spring, I put a perfectly sized washer over the top of the spring, which only left the stem and the keepers exposed (but covered the spring and the retainer). Then I put a large socket over it and smacked it with a hammer. That loosened it up. So then when I depressed the spring, the keepers were loosely laying there to be pulled! That was such a trick to figure out

Sounds like your valve job was a little more eventful than mine. Glad you got it worked out. That socket trick is old school but usually when I try it I am having to order new retainer clips because they go flying haha

Another old school trick for assembly is instead of using a magnet like I did, take a non magnetic screw driver and a dab of grease on the end. It's like a glue trap for the keepers and helps you get them in position while holding the spring down with the compressor tool.

I was getting so desperate I was tightening hose clamps around the arms to keep it from slipping off. After I bent the little tabs in some more they never slipped off. Good luck with it man.

Thanks for the info on the valve spring compressor. On mine I bent the "legs" until they are nearly touching one another and it gives it more grip (also the the springs I'm working with are quite small). It went from being useless to working well. It made the spring bend one way and it sliped before it could properly compress the spring and not it works like a charm.

Thanks for checking the video out. I was in the same predicament originally. I was trying to use hose clamps and zip ties to hold the legs of the puller in the spring then finally I said screw it and bent them in and it worked like a charm

I did this job with this tool on a v6 3.0 Vulcan without bending the fingers. That was not a fun job. I shot a few springs across the room. Wish I had thought of this then.

If i wasn't worried about the video being 15 minutes long I would have shown how I did it on the first two valves. I had to use that hose clamp to keep the fingers pressed into the springs.

My springs just want to come up and just bind against the pin.. any thoughts?

Some of my springs were stuck to the top of the valve like the tool picked the spring up away from the head instead of pressing them down. Not sure if that's whats happening to yours but all I did was sprayed them with some PB blaster and let them sit a while. Some still got stuck but once I compressed them I supported the valve from the bottom with a socket and *carefully* bumped the compressor down toward the head and they came unstuck real easy. Good luck and wear your safety squints lol

Your right this isn’t that great of a tool, it is not universal as mentioned on the package, if the valve springs are down inside the head you will not be using this tool at all, for example I have tried to use this tool on a 2011 2.4 Ecotec head where the valves are down inside the head and this tool will not fit

Before I bent the tabs on the arms of the valve spring compressor inward some they would slip and shoot out of the spring. At first I was using the hose clamp to tighten around the valve spring compressor arms to keep them from slipping out. After I bent the arms in a little, they didn't slip any more. Hope I explained that well enough lol.

To quote the late (and great) John Haynes, creator of the Haynes Repair Manual, "assembly is the reverse of disassembly" lol Forreal though its pretty much the same process backwards but instead of using a magnet to extract the keepers use a non magnetic screwdriver with some wheel bearing greese on the end. The keepers will stick in the grease good enough to go in but they won't pull back out like a magnet will.
