If Ren was in a happy place the night he wrote this 2 yrs back, then we would be listening to a happy tune. He wasn't, so we aren't. Ren never wrote these songs for release...they were his therapy. It's special that we get to see them revealed, and it certainly shines a light on the dark that many people face, and the feelings of destroying everything around them. The material he's currently working on will of course be very different, but with Ren I think you need to be able to accept the dark and the light.....it's what makes him an independant artist, where he has no label telling him to write songs to a formula. Personally I'm stunned by the amount of music he's created before and during his treatment in Canada.

Hey Ren. You may never see this. I'm a military member. I found you a couple weeks ago and your song “Hi Ren” has became an almost comfort song. I have gone through a lot from being in service. I had doubts my whole life about me and my strengths and my capabilities as a person, a human, and the military can be rough on you. I had people who killed themselves, the hatred and jokes placed on me. It made me emotionally distraught. Everything from my childhood to my adult life now. I was the weird kid, the bullied kid. I ended up with anger issues and anxiety and suicidal thoughts. I coped poorly with the stuff. I felt alone. I ended up going to a therapist a year or so ago that I continue to do once in a while. And that journey of me fixing my problems, that may be worse than I'm aware I'm not sure, played in my head listening to that song. Seeing someone struggling with similar thoughts in such a unique and beautifully done way like you did. It's sheer badassery. You know this probably, but sharing your stories, your life, your thoughts. You're saving people. You have my respect and my support Ren.

I think the timing of his come up and what he had prepared already was such a contrast to how the majority discovered him musically. Okay, I feel like everyone is talking about the lyrics and the meaning behind them, but seriously. THE PRODUCTION. The BEAT. Oh my GOD. It’s so WEIRD. I love your choice of beats and how you alter your flow to fit the nuances in each of them. All of those funky synth sounds and the subtle background crowd noises add so much atmosphere to this track. The snares and cymbals are PERFECT for this too - so abrasive, it totally gives me Beastie Boys vibes. I’d love to hear this as an instrumental. This is probably my favorite beat you’ve released. Did you produce this yourself? I need to know. I have a desperate need to know more about how you produce your stuff. I would absolutely pay for a membership for your channel if it would allow you to do “breakdown” streams where you go into the nitty gritty of how you craft your songs. Also, “take the curve of the Earth and I flatten it” is such a badass fucking bar. Holding the guitar like a gun, too. Goddamn.

When I saw the name of this song on the album tracklist, I knew it was going to be raw, definitely coming from a place of deep hurt, and the self-sabotage that can often come with that. I know someone else has already said this but I think it merits being repeated again: thank you for making me feel less alone, for normalizing the deep dark and often twisted places we go to when the pain is too much to handle and MUST be expressed or else we lose burning ourselves to the ground, from the inside out. At least, that is how it is for me. The extreme hurt, furious anger, and intense frustration must be heard. Be let out. In order for ME to live, to bring peace to my mind and try to move on. But of course, the best way to do that is to alchemize it into something that won't hurt yourself or others, like art. This song is a much needed cathartic release. It is therapeutic. ❤ you, Ren.

Surprisingly, because I have always been more inclined to other styles of music, I LOVED this song. The beat is fire and the overall message is very powerful. For me it's about liberation, self-empowerment and "awakening"; it's also raw and nasty, while also deeply philosophical. After these weekly releases, I can say that this is probably the most relatable and powerful song on this album so far. Thought-provoking yet very universally relatable for anyone who has experienced deep spiritual and existential crisis, no matter the different background or reasons for your struggles. I sense this as a cathartic release, almost pouring out of you. Being in that state can be addictive but self-destructive and masochistic at the same time. Also, how your pain changes your relationship with your environment and the world is another significant aspect of this. The world becomes a terrible and dark place, nihilism and cynicism can easily take over, and frustration target even the people who care about you, leading you to self-isolation and alienation. It's no easy feat to pull yourself out of that and move on, especially if there are no easy solutions, if you know your problems are self-inflicted and over the years you have almost forgotten who you are, given up on your dreams, burdened by too much knowledge, lacking purpose and meaning in your existence.There's a reason people often find or curse God when they are at their lowest, when there is nothing else left but meaningless suffering. Anyway, this song is a good slap in the face, raw and authentic.

What I find so cool about this track is that on the surface it is so loco and dark, while at the same time there is a reference to Zen Buddhism. The Chinese Zen master Linji of Zen Buddhism says If you meet your parents, kill them! If you meet the patriarchs, kill them! If you meet the Buddha, kill him! Which roughly means that you must break down all illusions, be in the present and drop attachments to the past and future. In this way one achieves nirvana, which Ren also refers to. Well at least that's my interpretation haha!

I don't think anyone expected this from a song called Masochist, but it is Ren for you with another "surprise". I am sure this will make many people angry, some bars were objectively provocative.. BUT in the cancel culture that we live where everything is filtered by "politically correct" speech patterns good on Ren for not flinching from possible reactions to this song. Personally I like this side of Ren. Not afraid to "go there". After the hype train of Hi Ren, he could've removed this one from the album as it is not an easy song to swallow. Kudos to all 90s babies that grew up with middle finger songs, much appreciate this throwback to my angsty teen years~
