Let's challenge some sterotypes here. I am a 74 yr old white woman who never listened to a rapoer in my life before Ren. He has blown every sterotype i ever had about music. The depth of Ren's talent combined with the depth of his character, have inspired me to open my vision in a hundred different ways. In his humanity, dealing with chronic physical and mental illness, he speaks fir an entire community of people missing in action with invisible illnesses. Seven Sins and Murder acoustic version are my favorites. Hi Ren just surpased 25 million views in 13 months, because it is so relatable.

I liked your style & reaction. Ren is 33. He's different different. No two songs are the same. Every bar has meaning. He's a genre bender. He also produces almost every track. The Hunger & Genesis are good to go too next. He's a dope lyricist. His fans are ride or die.

Don't assume you can't do this stuff. Change the narrative and try not to gatekeep. Ren's had it tougher than most of us. Anglesey is quite a deprived rural area. He fought and worked hard for everything he's got. I appreciate your props, but please don't stereotype, tough is tough whoever you are 👍🕊️
@EvilSoupDragon10 ай бұрын
Ren said in an interview that with rap it’s important that you rap about your own experience, otherwise you are appropriating someone’s else’s culture. Ren, grew up in a small village on the island of Anglesey in Wales. He fell ill at 19 and was effectively confined to his bedroom due to physical and mental health issues. Although bed-bound he still made beats, something he has done since he was 12 years old, and when well-enough he moved to the South coast of England where he became a busker (street performers). I would say that even though Ren doesn’t have a strong accent, so even to English people like myself it’s not immediately obvious where he is from. He has an extensive back-catalogue of various music styles, because being independent he makes the music he wants to, and as you listen to more of his work you’ll find that when you first start any Ren track you can’t really predict what you are about to hear.

He was with the industry on a label but then he had to part ways with them when he became sick. He is steering clear of labels at the moment because of his illness, which is now a chronic disease, he does not feel he could commit to the grueling tour schedule that would be demanded of him nor could he be free to sing/rap and produce his music the way he wants to. So for now he remains an independent artist who is phenomenally talented in my opinion. I hope you continue to explore more of Ren’s discography. Thank you for your reaction.
@jeffwilson320510 ай бұрын
And 13 years of crushing pain, much of it stuck in a bed unable to do much but stare death in the eyes, will do things to a person. You should hear him sing and lead a band next. The Big Push doing I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop (yes, that Hip Hop) next.

Ren can also play different instruments like guitar,bass and piano

I'd suggest Seven Sins, The Hunger, Illest of our Time or Loosing It (Fisher retake) for some more rap. But Ren also has a lot of other styles mastered. You can have a long ride down that rabbit hole.

Ren is Welsh but has an English accent due to living in Brighton for many years. His parents took him to music festivals as a child and exposed him to lots of different music. Hearing a lot of folk songs gave him a taste for story-telling, so you will notice most of his tracks have a story. Some of his tracks are just for fun and a way to show off his rapping. The Hunger and Murderer are 2 good examples of his bars.
@angiepanaexx10 ай бұрын
I'm a 55 year old woman. Been broke nearly all my life, Ren came from very humble beginnings too, I don't know if I'd have had the same courage as him. He has turned down MULTIPLE record labels since his track "Hi Ren" blew up on KZbin. I NEVER listened to rap before, but this young man is special. He doesn't just rap. He's a very talented, musician, producer, writer, director, actor (not professional, but he acts out the characters in his songs, check out 'The Tales') and Singer....his singing voice is beautiful! Please, PLEASE do more from Ren. You guys are great. 😊 Would be interesting to get your take on the 'King Dotta Diss' from Ren. Take care, sending love from the U.K. ❤

Nice honest reaction guys. If you go down the Ren rabbit hole, you might be surprised. Not only is he difficult to compare to another artist since he does a lot in many genres, but each track can sometimes blend things. He does deep and painful, but he also has fun tracks. He's often very clever, which means that I, as a listener, have to re-listen and work a little harder because there can be layers that might not be obvious at first. I'd suggest "Illest of Our Time" next since it has both obvious and poetic bars so you'll catch something. BTW, when you hear Ren (or other UK musicians) refer to a council house/flat, it's a form of public housing. An estate or council estate is a complex of council houses with schools and shops. And the "dole" is public benefits aka "being on the dole." Ren would likely agree with your first assumption that he's a privileged white guy. As a fan, I'd say that's true overall, but he sings or raps about what he knows, which isn't exclusively menral and physical health illnesses. (Just remember all the assumptions people made about Eminem before they learned his story.) Yes, he's independent; produces his own beats, plays a dozen or so instruments; sings/raps/beat boxes, creates his videos (often live, often one-takes, often with videographer Samuel Perry-Falvey). For Money Game part 3, he even composed the string quartet, so when his fans say he does it all, we mean he literally can, though he doesn't limit himself. His collaborations are usually awesome. My rec: Illest of Our Time If you want a more personal introduction, "Hi Ren" or "Power" Bars, try "Genesis" Fun rappity rap, "The Hunger" or "Losing It" Singing, see him in The Big Push medley titled "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop" A vibe to drive to, "Ocean" or "Humble" 90s hip-hop homage, "What You Want" Imma skip the storytelling and rock, etc. Hope you dive in! Lots of nice Renegades out there. ✌️

Two things that really stuck out here for me... 1) The acknowledgment that black artists do not have the freedom to develop their expression of the rap genre through conceptual narrative. And this is being gate kept by the hip hop consumer which seems to actually be a self-inflicted restriction. 2) The inability to appreciate The juxtaposition of expression through personal experience (me) then expanded to the overall social issue (we). This highlights one of the issues we run into with our society in which our own personal struggles are often the tunnel vision in which we see the world, which allows us to ignore or devalue common struggles as a society as a whole.

I am white and blonde, so I understand that I do benefit from many kinds of privilege. But I've also had brain surgery seven times and have almost died twice. As it turns out, brain tumors don't actually care what you look like, how old you are, what your gender is, or what race you are. Nor do any other kinds of medical issues. And the pain extends far beyond the physical. For example, when I was 12, I spent a lot of time in hospital. During that time I saw 4 babies die. Two years later, those memories returned and I fell into a deep depression and psychosis. Ren is the only artist I have ever been able to connect with on such a deep level. Medical PTSD is such a unique kind of pain. But people who have it can find so much solace in community. And this community includes people of every race, gender, age, ect. I know you know very little of Ren's background so I'm not berating you or this reaction in any way. I just thought I'd challenge the whole "white rapper" stereotype a bit because Ren is so much more than that. He gives people like me a voice.

REN definitely didn’t grow up with privilege! He grew up poor with 13 years so far of severe medical problems not thinking he would live to 30. He’s nearly 34 now. Lyme Disease is curable in most folks. However, in some it takes hold and becomes a chronic condition. Perhaps the length of time before actualy diagnosis was what did it for Ren. He is still receiving treatment in Canada for the effects of the disease on his body. Most notable is the pain that he experienced for years; probably this is what lead to most of his current music and notoriety. Woudl love to see the two of you react to Money Game 1, 2 and 3. It is an amazing series of videos. You mention the topic that Ren raps to here in Sick boi. There are many black rappers that are arguably better than Ren. However, Ren is very different and his style is approachable for individuals who would never consider rap a genre they would listen to. Ren has brought over a million new individuals in his audience into the rap genre. I now see these folks listening to a much broader set of rap artists. Another major difference with Ren is that he is pure genuine nice guy. Finally, you mentioned 'Wicked Ways' as being his best rap. I suggest you listen to 'Seven Sins' first; it is just shocking. Thanks, gentlemen, excellent reaction.

Not from a privileged back ground. He writes about deep and controversial subjects and has also done some great live streams. Check out where he thanks 1 million subs as he Appreciates the KZbin reactors. His band the Big Push do live street performances (busking) His videos have all been under £1300. Up until Money Game 3. Yes he is Welsh independent artist from the country of Wales in the UK. He does have some great collaborations and some fun tracks too. I think these initial tracks and this last year or more has been all about people getting to know where he is coming from. Sending you happy vibes from UK. Perhaps his track the Hunger next or Losing It (Fisher retake)- for fun reaction sending you both happy vibes from UK 🎶🧡🔥👩🦰

And I'd also check out Chalk Outlines (one-take video) with Chinchilla for his singing.

Your categories for white rappers are gonna have to expand to include ‘ren type’. Alit of the stuff off the sick boy album is depressing because he was specifically pulling up stuff he began thinking and writing during the worst of his illness it’s rap because he challenged himself to make an entirely rap album. But he mixes and blends genres abd even in these songs sone of them are not what anyone expects from rap, but there it is.
