YES! I loved how that beginning analogy was so perfect by the end, because that’s exactly what he did. With flow, with wordplay, with his physicality in acting out the lyrics…my gosh, this was a monster of a track!
@loadedorygun

I wonder if it’s not akin to side 2 of abbey road, which is a bunch of part songs blended into a medley. My sense is he put some different flows together that maybe he’d had in his back pocket but hadn’t fleshed out into full songs, and then created the first part to acknowledge the pieced together intertwining. But this is his brag reel for sure, saying I can do this; is this all you got? I got more.
@SpiritOfWanderlust

Yup. As I posted on another reaction to this vid: What is Frankenstein's Monster? A creature made of a bunch of other creatures stitched together to make one monstrous whole. What is the Hunger? A rap made up of over half a dozen different flows and schemes stitched together to make one monstrous whole. As the man said: "Blind, I design rhymes, intertwined, double time - Genuine Frankenstein - I made a monster." It's a pretty chaotic track but the dude gives you a thesis statement in the first few bars :)

Wow! That's the best breakdown I think I've seen. I thought Knox Hill taught me a lot (I don't know much about rap) but you just made me understand it. And you have understood his ' bars' ( I hope I'm using the correct terminology lol) better than anyone else I've seen! Glad you found his lighter stuff. 😊

Couldn't agree more. I was thinking during the breakdown, that this wasn't what I expected. Having seen so many reactions, I'd put the video on the background to see someone enjoy the video like I had so many times before, but was given the benefit of your breakdown in such an analytical way, it caught me off guard. Well done, I'm sure Knox can appreciate his new competition 😊😊

@@leeb8657 “this wasn’t what I expected” is possibly one of my favorite comments on this video. I’m REALLY glad people are enjoying it. I’ve been a student of the game for a long time (it’s also a major hyperfixation for me), but if people don’t know a whole lot about me, they definitely don’t necessarily expect it. Which is why I think I doubted myself before I even edited and uploaded it, because I don’t feel like I have enough “caché” in the industry to add anything helpful. Seeing people say that’s not the case makes my heart smile.☺️💕

DANG girl!! This is by far the best reaction to The Hunger I've seen, and I've seen a LOT of them. You are so good at breaking down bars and explaining what he's doing with his flows and such. You're so on the same wavelength as Ren it's uncanny! Interesting add on about Django Reinhardt, who was a promising young musician when he was injured in a way that he lost use of a couple fingers on his fret hand, which should have ended his career but he went on to be one of the greatest guitar players of all time. I'm sure Ren relates to him a lot. And right after that he mentions Van Gogh, another mutilated artist but mostly mentally. So with those two references he's saying he's been cut down both physically and mentally by his illness but he's overcoming it and using it to become one of the greats. Also both Van Gogh and Reinhardt were innovative artists who combined styles and came up with new ways of making art/music- much like Ren himself. I didn't put all that together until hearing your analysis but wow is there a lot packed into that verse!
@loadedorygun
@loadedorygun Жыл бұрын
I didn’t think of those points about Django and Vincent tho I knew that about both. Thanks! Definitely intentional.
@loadedorygun

Also, Van Gogh in particular has a similar approach to his art, particularly his subjects: working class, suffering but dignified, just getting by in the context of a beautiful world.
@BeccaDoss

As always, your comments and encouragement means so much to me. And that’s a super interesting hit of trivia about Django, I actually had no clue about that, so I’m really glad you took time to point it out, and how it makes that section even MORE powerful! I am so glad people have enjoyed this one, my own one critic definitely had me doubting myself by the end.😁💕
@Apollo.Rising
@Apollo.Rising Жыл бұрын
@@BeccaDoss The inner critic is really something, huh? I think it was on a Twitch stream shortly after Hi Ren released (you should be able to still find it there if you're curious) where he was saying he was nervous about putting it out because maybe people would think it was self indulgent and whiny (I'm paraphrasing). So even with that masterpiece and with how talented Ren is even he's not immune to it. For me personally as well, I'm an experienced illustrator and designer and my clients have always been happy with what I give them and still I get that voice every single time before I send my work off saying it's not good. At this point I just take it on faith that the voice is wrong but it can be very disorienting.
@SplashOfGreen
@SplashOfGreen Жыл бұрын
@@loadedorygun also there might be some tying into the fact that Van Gogh did not see fame in his lifetime, only until after he passed did his paintings become valuable (he only sold one painting while he was alive, or was it three?) Tying into the line from Hi Ren: “And when I am gone I will rise In the music I left behind” Also: “But my music is really connecting, And the people who find it respect it, And for me that's enough 'cause this life's been tough So it gives me a purpose I can rest in” “Rest in” referring to “Rest in peace” Making a mark on this world, his sickness is driving him to become something bigger, so that he feels fulfilled in his purpose as an artist, while struggling with the idea of death :(

This is the very definition of fire, a super flex track. NO WAY to catch everything at one go, he simply drops too many bars too fast. But the good news is you can watch it 100 times without getting tiring of it, and get it all. Trust me, I speak from experience. I still get the same rush. He makes all his own beats, too, except on retakes. The man is a genius.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! Sometimes I worry that I go a little too in-depth, but I honestly can’t help myself. He packs SO much into EVERY BAR, with so many different rhyme schemes, flows, multi-entendres, and many other awesome things he executes flawlessly, I can’t help but comment on everything my brain picks up. That’s why I sometimes even add a couple notes afterward when editing, because I get annoyed when I didn’t catch something the first time. I’m really glad you love the detailed breakdowns! I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.😁💕

Another great reaction Becca! So many reactors say, "I'm sure Ren will help someone going through similar issues", but you actually show us that in effect. Thank you so much for that, and for your great breakdowns of the lyrics. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but Django Reinhardt was an extremely skillful jazz guitarist who only had 1 finger on one of his hands. Obviously, Vincent Van Gogh had his mental health battles, and I love how he chose to pronounce it the American way, 'go' to fit the rhymes, instead of the British 'goff' or the Dutch 'hoh' (like loch). It seems that Ren takes inspiration from them in the same way that we take inspiration from him and many, including me, will take inspiration from you. Thanks again

You’re absolutely right, he did acknowledge that. I think, being a fan of NF, too, I’ve heard NF complain about how he always got compared to Em, and even referred to as “the next Eminem” for several years, and it really irked him. (And it became such a frequent comparison thay Em even had the line in his track, The Ringer: “Especially *an effing* Recovery clone of me *(NFing)*”which most people think was Em’s his first public acknowledgement of that. I think I just assumed that’s the case across the board, hence my disclaimer, but I can definitely tell Ren has studied Em. AND he’s found a way to take influences from Em, other rappers, and all other GENRES to create his one of a kind art. Really something special. I’m so glad you enjoyed this one! It’s insane how much long term pain completely changes you. Mine started in 2006, with my first of almost a dozen surgeries, and it’s been every minute of every day. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I’ve had people who’ve had pain for a few days or weeks and they always ask how I manage it. My response is always the same “barely”. If it’s in person you can totally hear my voice break, talking in comment sections is so much easier. A lot of us know we aren’t alone in our struggles, but seeing how many people are opening up in reaction videos, and comments, has been very cathartic for me. I hope it’s been that way for others, whatever their struggle happens to be and no matter how dark it gets, we’re not alone.

I’m so sorry to hear of your own journey with pain and struggles that most people can’t understand if they haven’t gone through it. I definitely relate to everything you’re saying, and I also want to acknowledge that “barely“, while it can sometimes feel a little discouraging to be barely making it, it does mean that we are still finding ways to get through, even on the days we’d rather not. I really appreciate you taking time to share just put a story here, and I love that his music has been able to be such a cathartic and therapeutic outlet for so many, and the awesome community he’s managed to rally around him. Brilliant reaction! A pendulum moves slower at either extreme than it does passing through the mid point, so it could also be another way of saying he is high. Or, working off your connection to the spoken word at the end of Hi Ren, it could be saying that it is like a clock that hasn't been wound and the pendulum is coming to rest, ie. he is experiencing a break from that exhausting back and forth dialogue and a moment of peace.

Brilliant reaction I respect your endurance with taking the time to go through every line and properly soak it in truly well done. I've watched many reactions of Ren's work and something that my mind thought of watching yours was the first couple frames with the pig head on a pike. Alot of reactors question why it was there, however after listening to every single song of his a hundred or so times, or so I speculate. It may be symbolic of hanging up the "sick boi" themes and messages in order to bring the focus not on the struggles but the hunger that he can express himself in passed his illnesses while still being there as it always shall be. That's just a theory but I thought to ask as I don't have first hand expierence with chronic illness but would focusing on something other than your illness be cathartic or disheartening as you know you have to be thrust back into those worries and pains any such way? Regardless can't wait for the next reaction do remember to breathe and take your time you may find the next song hits incredibly hard still great work and can't wait for more.

First, I just wanna say thank you so much for taking the time to watch and leave such a thoughtful, encouraging comment. It means more than my words in a comment here can say. The answer to your question is both yes and no: immersing yourself in a passion or hobby or anything like that can definitely be super helpful and give you something concrete to focus on that’s not just the pain and suffering, especially if you can find a way to Connect with it without it city you back physically (for instance, I write rap, myself, but recording songs like that and that entire process takes more energy than my body will let me use right now, but thankfully I’ve been able to lean into making these videos, and it’s not only been helpful and cathartic for me to make a Videos and hear the music, but it’s just as healing to be able to connect with so many awesome people here on KZbin and on the discord server. This Fanbase and community is unlike any other by far. On the flipside, there have definitely been plenty of years, including until the past month or so when I started leaning into the ranch videos some more, where even trying to engage in some of my passions was extremely frustrating and felt like a futile effort, because my body and brain just couldn’t do it. When that’s the case, and you’re not able to find a way to connect with what you feel has been stolen from you, you can definitely feel lonely, especially in the in-person world. But I would say, more often than not, being able to have something you enjoy and can focus on is definitely helpful because he gets you a reason to keep going on the days when you otherwise feel like giving up. Thank you so much for taking time to ask this super thoughtful question, it means a heck of a lot.💕

Wow this is such a great reaction and a very good break down. Great job! So glad I found your channel Edit: I've watched multiple reactions including Knox Hill and you pointed out a couple things in this reaction he didn't and made me think a lot more about his actions in this video than originally.

I'm glad you've got to see a different side of Ren but even more glad I got to to see a different side of you too. Ren has more fun tracks and definitely more emotionally heavy tracks too and I look forward to your insight on all of them.

This made me smile so much, Phil, thank you! There’s not a whole lot that makes me happier than being able to surprise people or just show them different sides of my personality they wouldn’t have any reason to know yet. I’m definitely looking forward to the gamut of genres and emotions I know he’s mastered!
