A DIY attempt to make a solid engine mount for a renault clio 1.2 16v.
These clios seem to have a woefully vague gear change and the gearstick does a lot of jumping and bopping around, the main reason for it jumping is the rear engine mount or torque reaction link holding the engine and gearbox.
The old mount was the original one and quite perished, but the new one was the same spongy design so i decided to attempt a DIY mod to make it more solid by wedging bits of exhaust hanger rubber into the gaps and filling the mount with tiger seal.
A polybush kit would undoubtably be much better than this, but this method is the cheaper DIY way, and seems to have worked quite well
With the new mount on the gearstick seems to do a lot less jumping about, to be honest i didn't let the tigerseal set fully when i put the mount back into place but as the stuff cured further it got more solid and the gearstick moved even less.
The Nissan primera 1.8 my dad drove until last year also had a similar problem with its gear stick (presumably a great idea shared between nissan and renault was to use this sort of rear engine mount)

great job, I cut slightly larger pieces than the gaps and used washing up liquid to force them into place. Once dry I sealed them with a rubber adhesive. I have pretty much no movement at all now. Thanks for your help, very easy job guys.

Glad to have helped. With regards socket sizes i find it helps to avoid the comments asking what size different fasteners are. Although do people buy sockets individually? A full set is surely much more useful for working on a car and generally not too expensive.

On the clio getting this mount off didnt require the jack, although the side engine mount did as it holds the weight of the engine, ive done timing belt videos on both the clio and the 406 (take a look through the playlists) that will give you an idea of the engine mounts, im not sure what way the 206 is setup but it shouldnt be too different if you have an XUD or HDi engine its probably more like the 406
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 11 жыл бұрын
The 2.0 HDi engines lower engine mount can wear out and cause this to happen, it is a bit of a pain to get out (you need to get the drivers side driveshaft out first) but if you get it out a polybush would be a much better option.

Yeh messed the threads up in 3 out of 4 of them. A local garage said if I can remove the hub and take it to them he will see if he can tapped new threads in but if he cant do that. Its the front drivers side. Is it just a case of wheel off, remove brake pads and callipers, disconnect droplink at hub, disconnect wishbone balljoint from hub, disconnect drivershaft from hub at hub end, Remove nut holding suspension to hub then pull hub out and replace with new hub in reverse?

Nice Video Man. I am going to do it on my Kangoo because the engine movement makes the gear stick move a lot and it is very annoying. Also I am very curios to know what is that metal pipe that runs parallel to the right of the mount. I have researched it on the internet but I cannot figure it out. Thanks.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV Thanks man. Hi eventually found the time to do replace the dogbone mount. Yes it did tighten up the gear change and now also the engine does not stutter when taking off from a stop. So much so that now reverse gear it is very hard to shift. Do you know what can cause this? Before replacing the rear engine mount should the gear be shifted to specific gear? Thanks again for your very helpful video
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 2 жыл бұрын
@@antoniocerbone802 Hi again, not too sure about the reverse gear. Ideally when you change the mount your just replacing it for one with less movement, it will not actually move the position of the engine or gearbox. Unless there was so much movement before that it stretched at the cables. It may be worth removing the air filter box and battery box to inspect the gear change cables. Also the cable that is operated by the gearstick where you lift up to engage reverse. I dont think the gearstick had to be in any specific gear before changing these mounts.

Have you stripped the wheel threads? I think there are helicoil kits or something named similarly, the 406 i was breaking had the same issue, if you get them tapped you will need new bigger wheel nuts, which means one wheel will have different sized nuts, personally id just replace the hub, even for one in a scrapyard. Is it the front or back? Ive done videos on removing the rear hub and front hub.

Couple of questions for you: 1: can the same procedure be adopted for replacing the front engine mount on a Y reg clio? 2: before replacing it, the front offside road wheel was worn on its outer edge. Al the other ones were fine. Is this a steering alignment/tracking issue? I'm confused
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 10 жыл бұрын
The front engine mount as in the one beside the timing belt is a bit different, you would need to support the engine on axle stands, remove the mount bracket for access to the mount then change the mount. As for the wheel, it could be an alignment issue, things such as hitting a kerb can knock it out of alignment causing the wear.

Thanks again for another great video, I'm doing my drop links and rear mount tomorrow and had a quick question. Not bothered about the drop links but it's the first time I've got under the car when on stands and I'm a bit apprehensive to say the least! Just wondering where you jacked it up and exactly where you put the 2 stands? I did my driveshaft 3 weeks ago and put the stand directly under one of the bits of box section that go from front to back directly underneath the seats. Looking at it I should only be under there 10 mins but it only takes a second to squish me! Thanks so much again
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 9 жыл бұрын
Adam Bridgeman I understand being apprehensive, i still would be claustrophobic under a car. I jack the car up on the sill using the jacking points, if the sills are rusty or clad in some plastic bodykit then i go for the subframe or back suspension, then put the axle stands on the solid parts of the subframe and back suspension. Dont extend the stands to their fully up position as they can get a bit wobbly (this depends on what type of stand you are using, and make sure they are all sitting level, ie that each axle stand has its 4 feet firmly on the ground, put the cars wheels under the sills and if you want even more put some tree stumps under the cars sills aswell, and to test the solidity of the stands push the car a bit, not too hard but enough to see if its rocking. I also try to avoid being completely under the car when doing work i prefer to reach in from the side and get to the parts.
@adambridgeman1935
@adambridgeman1935 9 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate, ironically I haven't long finished it, I put one stand on that bit of subframe plate underneath the box section I mentioned, and another about 3 foot further up on the box section. Solid as a rock :) was done in 5 minutes... Now for my drop links. Couldnt undo one of the wheel nuts so went and got my tires done first. Just got back and still can't get the one undone, and snapped my wheel brace in the process.... Uh oh!
@peugeotCitroen2CV
@peugeotCitroen2CV 9 жыл бұрын
Adam Bridgeman Is the wheel nut in question one of the locking wheel nuts? As for the wheel brace the ones cars come with these days are crap, just a bit of bar welded onto the end of a cheap socket, the weld usually breaks a the first sign of resistance. Get one of them telescopic wheel braces they are a good thing to have in the car incase a wheel needs to be changed. Its as well the brace broke at home and not at the side of the road.

Is it possible a bad engine mount would cause the gearbox failure light to appear on the 1.2 clio with auto transmission. I've been trying to diagnose this problem for a while. A lot of clunking in low gear changes and when over bumps and the transmission light often comes on. I've changed the dog bone mount and and the problem is still there. Visually the mounts look fine but then again I'm not really sure what I'm looking for.

Haha the Kim K ass, funny although I know exactly what Megane you are talking about. The rear lower engine mount as I have replaced here no you shouldn't need to support the engine, it will rock from front to back a bit when removed (don't turn the engine on with it out) just be wary of nipping your fingers. The engine will still be supported by the main engine mount beside the timing belt cover, and the gearbox mount, if you were replacing either of those mounts then the engine would need to be supported.

Physically a 2.0 engine should fit as the 172 and 182 models are 2.0 engines albeit petrols without any turbos or intercoolers. Its something that would require research you would need to change the suspension and steering to suit the 2.0 dci engine, not to mention changing the wiring and ECU to work with the engine.
