Worked perfectly thanks, 24hrs in the freezer for the bearing and 1hr in the oven for the hub. Went in a dream, awesome and as others have said saved me a whole lot of aggro and money.

All I can say is "wow!". I always knew about the hot and cold stuff, but I never expected the bearing to just drop in like it did! Thanks for sharing.
@StodgyGaming2 жыл бұрын
Cheers for this. Instead of using an oven I used a blow torch to heat the hub, bearing dropped straight in!

sneaky bar steward! i like the cut of your jib! For those without access to weld!!! Take the bearings out as the nice man says. Put one bearing race in (ready to knock out the sleeve) add the old bolt on top. And WHALLOP!!!! First one I did was 3 hours until I figured this out. Second one came out in 2min!! Thanks for the video and hope this helps those without a welder because it was a god send for me

Brilliant, so easy. First time I've replaced this type of wheel bearing in car, (Renault Kangoo rear drum), seeing you hammer the old bearings out gave me confidence to continue hitting with sledgehammer, then correct hit and the old ones started to move, few more hits and out! Then hot and cold, new bearings just fell in.
@markhudson8768 жыл бұрын
Great idea to freeze the bearing and heat up the hub - it worked perfectly. Getting the old bearing out was a bloody nightmare! I'd underestimated the amount of force required to get it moving. Like others, I used a socket and a large bit of steel. It was just a case of supporting the hub on blocks and whacking the drift until it started to move. Good video.

Great video! To make it even easier to get bearings out, rather than just doing the little spot welds, if you run about 4 welds right the way through the inside of the old bearing "outer case" and wait for them to cool down, the shrinkage affect of those welds will make it fall out or come out with a very light tap.
@HelgiThorisson2 жыл бұрын
Indeed, it makes the job easier. Even though you have special tools for the job you should always run 3 to 4 welds like you said above. I was working in workshop for a few years we always did it like this and we had no press, we did not need it. We had tools that fit the following description so we could do the job on the car: "Front Wheel Drive Bearing Adapters Press Kit Puller Set Replacement Installer Removal Automotive Mechanics Tool". A set like this can cost about 70 USD. You could even use a: "Bearing Race and Seal Driver Set - Universal Kit Allows for Easy Race and Seal Installation" which costs about 30 USD and is designed for tapered roller bearings. That is, if you weld the old outer case/ sleeve or race before removing it, heat up the wheel hub or brake drum and freeze the new bearing before installation.

Saw this video and was very worried about doing this. I did however take the plunge and it worked exactly as in the video. I did it on both drums of my 2000 reg Vauxhall Agila. Thank you very very much for posting the video.

welding some spots on was a great tip, was struggling for an hour till i spotted this, 5 minutes later..... done
@gdawggz12 жыл бұрын
Helped me out big time thanks, literally dropped in, about 99% of the way anyway, needs a few taps with the old race to seat it though but wait for things to cool down/heat up before doing that. The old race isn’t half a bastard to bang out.

Great job plasticduk, did both rears, bearings in freezer 24 hrs and hub in oven on full power for 40 minutes - no problems, put new shoes on also.

SUCCESS ! I have just removed the bearings from my Megane Mk1 using a block of wood for base, a club/lump hammer and the tool I used was a AM-Tech 50mm Core Drill bit.. The heavy bit only of course.. 11 Euro/ £8 You will ruin that piece but buy another and save the centre SDS bit as a spare.. Now if you can remove the tungsten tips first. I couldn't so I hammered it other way round and they chipped off. Now turning it around with tungsten tips gone I hammered heavy precise blows and it was out within 5 minutes... Now for the fun bit.. The hub is in the oven and the bearing is in a commercial -17 degree freezer 24hrs Oven Maximum 50 minutes! SUCCESS !

Great hack the one we did had a metal shoulder at the back which made it harder some heat on the hub and a 32 mm socket on the casing had it out. Bearing in the freezer and oven on didn’t drop in but bashed in and all’s well many thanks

Use the correct size socket then when you use your hammer it will push it out parrelel and not kink it. I like the weld dots. I'm a marine engineer and changing bearings is pretty common job on pumps. Both heating and freezing works well. Sometimes you can freeze shafts to drop bearings over the top too.

Works A Treat Find a piece of scaffold pole: can biff the old one out with that after you've put it in the oven. It takes some biffing. Gas mark 160c for five minutes after the light goes out. Use some spare bubble wrap to carry the bearing around before you drop it in. . Perfect mate, perfect.

Great video, very well described. I've got my rear fiesta one to replace soon. It has abs on it but hopefully it will be the same sort of thing. Do you think using a socket and some threaded bar would be any use? I mean to pull it through. I have no welder and I'm cautious about damaging the inside of the hub with a chisel. Thank you
@snookersmith7 жыл бұрын
Watched this video earlier and thought brill tried but couldn't budgeOuter casing, so my additions n to this and it's far easier if you have a 32mm socketWith a short extension placed down centre and hammer out 4 or 4 decent hits and they were out, going to put new bearings in following this advise cheers.
@leavethelez3 жыл бұрын
Mine had like someone else here in the comments a metal shoulder at the back which made it almost impossible to hit the outer case on the back so i went with the weld dots. The welds broke of a couple of times, i had to hit it really hard with a very heavy hammer, no movement at all. Then i decided to oven heat the drum, cooled the old bearing case carefully from the inside not spoiling water on the hub, hit again and so it finally came out. The tips on shrinking with weld beads or using a bearing puller (or DIY bolt / washers) i read after the job was done but could have been also helpful.

Top idea on the blobs of weld to get some purchase with the chisel as i done the same. Once you get it moving its childs play after that. New bearing been in freezer overnight, will whack the drum in the oven today and slot it back on, all should be good. cheers. "edit" after leaving it in the oven for half hour and the bearing didnt drop in like this did. :p i just used the outta casing from the old bearing to hammer the new one home, all done and back on the car now.

@carlsimpson48754 жыл бұрын
I had an old piston from a brake caliper i welded it to the inside shell of old bearing it drove out pretty easy but i had put a full run of weld round it if you don't have a welder i think it will be much harder to get out and you would have to be very careful,make sure you don't damage the abs pick up ring on the rear of drum.

renault citroen peugeot rear bearings pretty much all same. absolute no need for all this freezer and oven stuff and driving old race out with lump hammer and weld beads. It a pretty small bearing at like 52mm od, use a long bolt like get in the coil spring compressor tools or from a car scissor jack and mix that with old sockets and washers to pull bearing out, you won't believe how easy they come out and go in like this . easier than a press as load so even. Bearing removal and install kits based on threaded bolt cheap on ebay too if want easier option again .

Seriously thinking about trying this! just a quick question Is their not a chance that this could end up doing damage to the hub/bearing/oven? and when in the oven do you just set it on high and leave it for the 20-30 mins
@Belfree9 жыл бұрын
Billy McGinty no the hub will be fine and the bearing wil be fine aswell the smoke and sisseling you hear if the ice melting and the bearing exspanding back to its normal size the hub (being hot) will shrink back to form and will be beter seated then pressing it in. and the oven doesnt get hurt by heating something up m8 :D

Its a simple way of doing it and saves so much time. If you wanted to you could probably get the old bearing out by heating up your wheel hub.
@blockbertus7 жыл бұрын
That would heat up and expand the bearing or the remainings as well. wouldnt work that well. it works for putting it in because he cools the new wheel bearing which causes it to shrink slightly.

To make removal of the old bearing case from the hub easier try running a couple of lines of weld around the inside of the case. When the weld cools it will contract and make the case slightly less tight in the hub and easier to knock out.
