How to fix Renault Megane / Laguna keycards
Renault charge upto £350 for replacing your keys and reprogramming your ecu.

just fixed the key we were told could not be repaired.it was badly damaged smashed up but would just open doors,then our good key stopped working .so thought we would give the repair a go ,could not belive when we got it working,you would think we won the lotto, high fiving each other .really needed the car tomorrow hospital appointment ,kids to school.thanks a million.you made our day.

This worked really well! The spare key for my Megane has never worked for as long as I've had it. Also recently the car has been having starting problems, taking three attempts to get the engine going, even after having the ignition coils and spark plugs replaced. After fixing the spare key, not only did it work, but the car also started first time! This fix has saved me forking out on a new key, but also on a new battery and starter motor! I think the spare key will no longer be spare! Thanks a lot! :)

I put mine through the washing machine a few months ago and I had given up on it. Took it apart today and re-soldered, it's working fine now, it looks a mess with sellotape all around it but cheaper than the £150 I got quoted for a new one. Thank you very much.

Thanks Armookie. Just sorted my Megane key card thanks to you. It was simple to do. Re-soldering the coil sorted the problem. The most difficult bit was getting the card apart in the first place. It broke a bit so a pot of super glue was needed. Keycard works perfect now. Thank you.

i carefully opened the key card and the transmitter coil had 2 loose legs. thank you for the tip works first time now. i would say be so careful when opening the card especially next to the battery. i spent over an hour teasing it open but it works spot on

I followed the instructions to open the key fob and found two of the soldered points on the coil lose. I didn't find you had to break the cover as shown, you just cut down where the key is inserted and it's fine. BEWARE: When cutting open the fob make sure your knife doesn't go in very far, less than 3mm. You need quite a bit of force at times which makes it difficult to control. I accidentally damaged the coil wiring because the knife went onto the very delicate wire and cut a strand or two. Now I have had to buy a replacement coil for £10 (inc postage) on eBay and need to replace the coil. Hopefully when I get the replacement coil it will all work fine. Thanks for the video though, I find KZbin videos like this one absolutely brilliant for home repairs. Cheers

Use a hot knife and some tweezers as I had no soldering iron. Works perfectly just sellotaped the card back together. Thanks mate saved me £££££££!

why I didn't check for a video before i went to renault. Just spent best part of 200 for a couple new keys and that's not including the reprogramming. I will be checking for a way to do that without needing renault. you absolute legend sir

Good video... My brother fixed mine in a similar way .. He said people put the cards in their back pockets and then sit on them causing the soldered joints on the card to crack.. So always treat your card with care!

I fixed a Scenic card using techniques like this, before I saw this video. I would say that it is not as easy as this video might imply. It is very easy to damage something when slicing the case open, e.g. I sliced a tiny resistor off the board and cut the wire on the coil when I did it but as I am an electronic engineer I managed to repair those. It is very important not to penetrate the case sides more than 2mm to avoid this. Most people won’t have a soldering iron and solder small enough. Preferably use 0.8mm solder. My second card is now erratic and it does not appear to be due to any of the solder points mentioned here. It works if the PCB is bent when case removed. But dies start the car. So I’d suggest try this if you have a car you can not unlock. If you have a multimeter check the coil resistance which should be 100 to 1000 ohms. The card has 2 different circuits, one is battery powered for remote locking and the other is coil powered for engine start. So the car will start without a battery in the fob and good battery contacts are not essential to starting, but the coil is. You may have a white powder on the circuit board due to corrosion caused by damp ingress. Brush it off with a stiff artists paintbrush.

Armookie Pain in the backside.. Got it open, the corners are the most complicated and have to say as long as you dont go past the bevel on a Stanley blade you should be ok. Checked all the soldering, still didn't work, went on the Renault forums, they say the coil should be reading about 90kohms, mine was only 56. The coil could be split, unwound it all, it was ok, used a drill to rewind. Got back up to 90kohms. Works, but only by bending it. You know on the coil, there are three soldered stand offs, the two together i know is needed but the third doesn't seem to be connected to anything. I think i may just send it of to be fixed for £25, was a good laugh taking it apart thou lol

Yes your correct the third solder point on the coil is not connected. Sounds as though the board may have a fine crack from what you describe. Just re check the solder points by heating each one till it reflows. :o)

Have just bought an 08 Megane Scenic Dynamic 1.9 Dci. only received one key with the car,is this normal? Thanks, I found one loose connection on the coil. Very easy fix for me. Though I couldn't open the hole key, luckily it was 1 of the top connections loose and not the bottom one because it was snapping the plastic. Managed too squeeze in the top with an iron and solder it.

Sound advice, would have worked if I hadn't been so heavy handed with the Stanley knife when I opened it and cut the coil. The spare key started playing up soon after and I daren't risk doing it again and leaving myself stranded so I rang the local garage,( I live in Leeds) who gave me the number of an electrician. He says he'll do me a new key card and program it in for £110 - ouch! but it's better than the £340 the Renault dealer were charging. As soon as I have a new key I'll fix the old one but this time I'll be a bit more careful opening it. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks for taking the time to make the video anyway.

You could just get a key from scrap yard or ebay and swap the coil will save cost of reprogramming.

Thanks for the fis - worked great for opening the doors - it was the broken contact on the coil as you suggest. Unfortunately for me I then got a new problem of 'card not recognised'. I must have damaged something else in the process, although I can't see how. So I'll have to call out a repair guy anyway. I'm really worse off as I would have had to do that anyway, but it does mean I can't drive the car, when I could before by using the manual key to get in. Thanks anyway - you never learn if you don't try! :)

The coil is the part that the card reader reads to start the car. usually if you get a spare key off ebay or scrap dealer you can just solder the coil from the spare into your key will fix it. :0)

Just let the solder melt on the third contact near the battery, Its solder point is hidden under the blob of solder already on the third pin. Hope it help you. :O) Good luck Many people have said it worked great for them afterwards. I repaired both my keys this way. :O)

Hi there - didn't work for me. Definitely seemed like a coil problem as it still opened and closed the doors it just said 'key not detected'. I made sure that I put a good blow of solder on all the three coil points but it made no difference. Other problem I had was getting the back off - took some time and used a stanley knife and screw driver but never managed to get the top section by the key ring hole to totally open so was working on it with the plastic outer splayed open. But even so managed to get the three contact points to adhere to the green board but after three attempts it still didn't work. Doors still work though!

hi you can just buy a used remote and take the coil from that and solder it to your card. Your local scrap yard will probably have the used keys cheap.

I was very, very careful when I opened the key card. I ran in to problems when I tried to prise the front from the back, it seemed to be connected at the point where the battery connectors were. Thankfully the only casualty was the outer casing, which I've ordered a replacement for. Will try the re heating the contacts on one key card and see how I get on. In the mean time, I still have a spare, malfunctioning key. Thanks again for advice.

I've got the soldering kit, I've got the 2 malfunctioning keycards, how lucky am I! I totally wrecked one but inside board undamaged, but ho so tiny! So, my next question is, do I need some teeny weeny solder? The solder in the kit is 1.00mm, lead free.

you need a small soldering bit. Personally I never had a need to add more solder. All I ever needed to do was to re heat the contacts for a few seconds only to refuse them back to the board. Also check the battery connectors are not split or broken going from the battery to the board.

Armookie if the battery points are broken then those points will need solder adding to re-join them. But that should be the only time you need to actually use solder. :O) Good luck

Hi Armookie can u put a close up of the keycard renault scenic circuit board on video both sides,because i,m not sure if i damaged any other pieces opening it as i had a tiny little gold bar fall out when i opened it! Also where is the information stored when they programme the key? Already had 3 days off work as i drive for a living, desperate to get this sorted!!

I would suggest you go to a local car breakers and get a used keycard. You can then disassemble it and use the internal parts from that to repair your key. As long as you have not damaged the on-board chips then you should be able to replace the components you have damaged from the replacement keycard to your faulty one. :O)

Replaced the 'lock' button on my Laguna spare keycard. The red LED lights up when I press either button, but when I tried to use it to open the car door it would not work. I used my normal keycard to open the door then tried my spare keycard in the ignition and it worked perfectly. I have checked all my solder points but cannot see anything wrong. I am getting 2.91v from the battery so at a loss as to know what is wrong. Can you advise me at all?

If you remove the two larger chips and fit them to the board off ebay. But its not easy at all. You would be best buying one off ebay and try changing the copper coil as that often is the part that fails. Otherwise just try solder the points I showed in this video and see if it works. :O)

ease the top off not the bottom and the connector wont snap off. (the top is with the buttons) dont pull the bottom at all

I have a problem with my 2004 Megane Keycards. The thing is I have 2 cards, one which opens the doors but cant start the car. The other one starts the car but cant lock/unlock the doors. My question is can I take the electronic chip from the one that can only start the car and swap it into the other one? I am thinking the result will be a good working card that does both things?

Yes or you could just replace the coil in the one that will not start the car. you can buy old keys off ebay or scrap dealer. then just un-solder the black coil disk and solder that into your original key fob. :0)

Can I ask a question? There are three pins on the coil. Two of the pins on the right side of the coil are connected beneath (one was detached and has been resoldered) but the third pin on the left next to the 'TOP' letters on the PCB cannot be soldered since there does not appear to be anything beneath the pin to solder it to. Is this pin just to stabilise the coil or has something broken off or what?

+Frank Williamson It's to stabalise the coil from what i have seen on opening one up.. The one i fixed had dry joints on all pins on the coil..

Just make sure its clean and make sure you heat up the pin enough to make the solder flow. It should then easily re-solder to the board. :O)

What glue do you need to use to glue the case back together. I've worked out the case is made of PA12 or Nylon12 but can't find any recommended glues for this. Your assistance would be much appreciate.

Hi, If my plastic casing is the problem (the key fob works but the plastic is smashed and will soon become unusable) so I change my battery and card reader into the new plastic holding - will it need reprogramming? I only have one key fob which is why I don't want to risk messing with it if it could cause a problem with the card reader. Thanks,

Should do and it seems as thought the pins from the battery have probably broken loose. Just be very very careful cutting open the key. The bottom edge is the hardest part to open. Make sure you take your time and don't let the blade push more than a couple of millimetres into the casing.

That's the difficult part. Just make sure to go around all the edges without touching the circuit board inside. Hope you sort it.
