We have a Megane 2 Hatchback 1.4 (2008) and despite the odd niggle with electrical problems and these have been few and far between, the Renault seems to be a sturdy car. We had a crash with a Hyundai 130i a few months back when the Hyundai driver crossed in front of us. The Renault needed a new headlight, the plastic bumper (tampon) needed plastic welding as did the front wing, plus paint, total cost 328GBP (sterling) and we suffered not a scratch. The Hyundai was written off after the subframe had become detached from the body shell and both occupants suffered minor injuries. Say what you will about Renault but our Megane was back on the road in two days, built like a tank as they say and the Hyundai sits on top of a pile of cars at the local breakers yard!

well, thing is, most of the impact was absorbed by the ford, not the megane. so basically, if there were people in the ford, they wouldve been injured much more severely
@DCuerpoJr15 жыл бұрын
The survival rate of a head on impact with two vehicles at 60+MPH is less than 20% and the probability of sustaining life altering injuries is over 95%. With today's technology, you'd still need to be in a big rig, bus or tank to survive an impact like that and walk away unharmed. Remember, improving safety typically adds weight and size to a vehicle. That's why compact cars built today are about 500 lbs heavier than compacts built 15 years ago.

There's a firearms Self Defense expert who's work I've studied for years, named Massad Ayoob. I read in a book of his once; an experience he had with a group of Doctors one day in a parking lot. As is his job and field of study, he travels all across the country, interviewing doctors, witnesses, police officers, suspects, victims, and reviewing shooting data including morgue and autopsy reports/cadavers of those who have died in shootings. He's a career Police Officer, who's studied this field for about 40 years. Anyways...one story he told always stood out to me. He wrote of speaking with a group of Doctors in a parking lot after an "at-hospital" session where he interviewed various physicians about gun shot wounds. He was leaving, when he looked around the parking lot and noticed that almost all the vehicles the doctors drove were large, full-size vehicles of very stout make and model; such as Cadillac Sedans, Ford Crown Victorias, large SUVs, etc etc. He turned to one of the doctors and pointed this out. "This isn't a coincidence, is it?" The doctor replied, "no Mas, it isn't. When you've seen what we've seen as Emergency Room and Trauma Care Doctors what happens to a body in a car crash, the results speak for themselves." So there you go. I just thought that was an interesting little story that's always stuck out in my mind. Certainly some truth it to to be sure.
@isaackarjala79169 жыл бұрын
Large cars also make it more dangerous to not be in a large car, and the safety gained by being in a large car is lost when you are surrounded by other large cars; the result being you need a larger car and eventually everyone is driving around in tanks with 5,000 HP engines (cause you still need to go fast) getting 10 fpg with gas prices at $10/pt.

Many cars of that era looked increasingly fat and displeasing because of the new and large safety tech that needed to be fit in. However Renault were so clever to design it and embrace it into the vehicle's aesthetics. Big can indeed be beautiful ;)

has fitted whiplash protection as standard since 1998. Search on youtube for Volvo crash test centre. It's a few years old the video, and they have made it even more advanced since then. However it gives you an idea of the lengths they go to, to make sure their cars are safe at any speed or situation.

Best car I've ever had.I'll stick with Meganes as long as they keep making them

Same! Some idiots ( those who've never owned Renaults) like to trash talk them but they're excellent. Currently sitting in my much loved mk2 facelift Grandtour. I've had some really quite nice cars here and there but this is hands down one of my favourites!
@Whitehorze15 жыл бұрын
Quite often actually. I've driven professionally for over 12 years. In that time I've had only 1 accident that was my fault. Every other time the other driver was found to be at fault (in court). THEE #1 problem today is that people simply DON'T pay attention. they're yapping on their phones, texting, playing with the radio, or anything other than operating their vehicle. That's why I fully support laws banning the use of cell phones while driving.

I had one of these. It was a nice car to drive but sadly it had the traditional French electrical faults.
@skylined55342 жыл бұрын
Such as? There are two main things on these cars, the regulators (cheap and easy fix) and the less than stellar water proofing on the loom connections between the body and doors (again, easy to fix).

@@skylined5534 Drivers window. Wipers (front and back). Went through excessive amount of light bulbs. It was a lease car and less than 3 yrs old so didnt have to pay to get the work done but not what you would expect of a nearly new car. I still quite liked it though. Had the 120 diesel engine which was good.

The safest car range there is Renault

They are the first company to build a car that has a 5 star euro ncap rating,first to build a family hatchback with a 5 star rating, first to reach 10 different models to have 5 star ratings. Seems like they are the safest of the lot. Still, volvo and saab also need mentioning as well.
@mawa696912 жыл бұрын
Nah, you can't think like that anymore, Renault has had a few problems with the new electronics in the beginning of this century, but they got much better on their current vehicules, statistics prove it. Plus, Renault is probably the best hot hatches constructor! Even if there good hot hatches elsewhere, the megane 250, the clio v6, the megane r26r, the r5 turbo, those are really bonkers! They even kind of invented the very concept of the hot hatch with the dauphine 1093...

I had three of these Meganes as company cars in 1.5 non turbo diesel guise. They were ridiculously slow and drove like shit after 20k miles. In contrast the very late '03 Mk2 Phase 2 Megane Scenic my wife had lasted for 15 years and still drove well.

Why would they just throw it out after that? That's just a frontal hit, I've seen cars like this get repaired after a £20k-30k hit

Have seen 2 colisions between Renaults and others (volksvagen and pegeout).... The renaults almost don't have damage... the passengers have nothing.. the other cars are wrecked... and the passengers have some injuries. renault is the safiest... and the best in colisions

It's 50 km/h, there's nothing small about that. Just 2-3 decades back, a collision at that speed would have a fatality rate of 15-30%, and in cases when it hasn't been fatal, you'd still most likely end up in a neck brace for a few weeks. So it was absolutely appropriate and necessary that airbags deployed.

The airbag being deployed mean the car sensed danger for the occupant life's. Which is not a good sign, some would have offered better protection thus not needing for the airbag to deploy. Airbags are always the " I gotcha buddy, but that's last resort "
@MrSupercar555 жыл бұрын
He only really got away with that crash because a lot of energy was dissipated pushing the other car sideways. If he had been driving on a road and had the misfortune of being hit head on, especially by a larger vehicle, like a 4x4 or a lorry or something, then even if he was able to walk away after the accident, he'd have to seek medical attention, even though the Renault does have a 5 star safety rating.
