Thank you for coming back for another episode of Renovating a Ruin. This week, work continues on our dream swimming pool. I attempt to preserve our overflowing supply of summer tomatoes while heavily pregnant in the relentless Tuscan heat. And I pull out the sewing machine to put a little finishing touch on a corner of our renovated rustic farmhouse kitchen. If you would like to support my work, you can find my Patreon page here:

Oh Kylie when you started sewing with that beautiful music.. tears filled my eyes.. it brought back so many memories of my dear Mama (I’m 62!) that was so industrious in her home. Always preserving, sewing, painting & creating. This video brought back these memories. You are truly amazing! Your home will be and is, bathed in love, beauty & creativity. Wishing you all the health & happiness for the months ahead. ❤️

It is so wonderful being able to watch a couple physically make a beautiful home for themselves and their family instead of getting up every morning drinking a fast cup of coffee getting in the car driving in the rat race to a job and then coming home driving through the rat race being exhausted to make a quick dinner and then fall him to bed! You are living the life that we all should be creating for ourselves instead of the one that we have allowed the world to create for us! I personally think that that is the one good thing that has come out of the KZbin experience is to allow people to create income and to be able to work at home and create a life with their families!

It is gratifying that you honor historic craftsmanship and style. I watched a Canadian interior designer restore a Tuscan villa and cringed at her superiority complex and hell bent drive to achieve a modern style with a Tuscan view. You have graciously demonstrated loving humility while achieving a meaningful lifestyle. You are an inspiration.

Everything will be fine for both of you by the time the baby arrives. You were doing fine with the canning. It was perfectly done. Having a child is the most beautiful thing in the world. When I held my first child in my arms, I was unprepared for the overwhelming emotion of love and wonder that took over and from that moment, I enjoyed every moment I had with my child and husband. A new and extraordinary experience that is unique for each person involved.😘

I had a surgery yesterday with only a two days notice of it needing to be done. I was able to find a little time to make a pot of chicken and rice stew to have ready for me while I’m now recovering. Just like your tomato sauce, these are such nurturing things we can do in our self care to stay strong and healthy for ourselves and our families. As I rest now in my bed, your videos bring me such tranquility. You and your precious baby will appreciate your efforts in this “nesting’ time you are taking. Thank you for your art Kylie 💖

The image of the beautiful color of the tomatoes, in your stunning sink with the water running from the brass faucet ! Absolutely fabulous! Love this format with you sitting down talking and letting Guido pick up the heavy pots. You look sensational with your babybomp! From watching your vedios for so long and seeing you from your care free single day's to seeing you nesting is incredible for me.. Love the two of you and soon to be three. ❤

If you add meat or fish to your beautiful sauce you’ll have to get a pressure canner as the water bath canning method is only for high acid food like tomatoes, fruit, jams etc. Low acid food including vegetables like green beans, legumes, onions, all meats and proteins must be properly pressure canned according to what’s in the jars, size of the jars and your elevation above sea level to be safe. Keep in mind that babies under one year should not be eating home canned food of any kind as their little bodies can’t process even a minuscule amount of the botulism spores that may be present and that have no ill effect on older children and adults. Don’t let that frighten you off though! Canning with a pressure canner is easy and fun with the right canner for your stove type, good safe recipes found in updated canning books and following the manufacturer’s instructions for your model of pressure canner. ❤️

Kylie you look absolutely radiant!! So gorgeous! You will be, and already are, such an amazing mother and I can see Guido being such a great father too, this is one very lucky baby on the way! Love you all so much, and everything you do! I live vicariously through your wonderful Tuscan life! So extremely excited for all of you! The tomato sauce looks & sounds delicious too and as others have said.. the scene with all the tomatoes bathing in your lovely farm style sink, was very calming and pleasing and watching you do the canning and sewing the curtain for under the sink, it makes my domestic abilities want to be that good. Maybe someday when I can retire from my business. Wishing you all stay very healthy & happy, and looking forward to your next video. Much love! 🥰💕🙏🏼🫶🏻

My husband warms the bottle with the contents in a pot of boiling water (below the lid level) so that when he seals them, it creates a vacuum. When he bottles his marinaded veges, he always adds an extra layer of olive oil on the top, to seal in the veg (not exposed to air). Storing jars inverted also helps to preserve the seal. We are so looking forward to your little one's arrival.

I am loving your beautiful videos in August, 2022. The tomato sauce is beautiful. Your life is looking very stimulating. All my senses are tweaked when I watch your projects. I can smell the sauce, I feel the touch of the terra cotta tiles. The pool looks so inviting (even though it is still in progress). I can imagine how cool it will be. I love that you are not stressing about all that is not done. Time will bring it all together. You and Guido and bambino are getting ready to start a beautiful life . I am so glad I am able to have a glimpse at such a beautiful life. I try your recipes and my guests are always impressed and want more. I have no leftovers. You look so healthy. I am very pleased for you. I have a cellar similar to yours. I keep wine, potatoes, other root vegetables in mine as well. I have not embarked on canning or any other way of preserving, but you certainly inspire me to try. Katie

Hi Kylie, Congratulations on canning for the first time. I just finished a batch of marinara sauce. I didn’t water bath mine but if you keep the tomatoes boiling and fill the jars while they are hot you can screw the lids on tightly and turn upside down on a towel on your table. You’ll want to immediately cover with an old comforter overnight. They should all seal quite nicely. I noticed you were cooking your tomatoes in an aluminum pot, (at least it looks like aluminum). That is a HUGE no-no, because the acid from the tomatoes causes aluminum to leach into the sauce. If you cook tomatoes cook with stainless steel pots. I learned how to can the authentic tomato sauce watching an Italian grandma on KZbin. I can’t remember her name, but she has great tips. You have such a lovely home! I LOVE your root cellar! You seemed tired in this video. I know it’s hard, but don’t forget to rest. Thanks for always sharing such beautiful videos with us!

I learned for jar canning, do not store your jars with the lids on. Just store with the lid that is sealed without the screw part of the lid. Also do not stack jar on jar. The reason is IF the seal is bad you can see the mold. But if the lid is screwed down tight you can not see that the jar is compromised so the botulism is invisible. Better to see it. Everything you do looks magical. Thank you for taking us on your journey. ❤️

Your channel continues to give me peace as I watch one episode after the other, reminiscing what my most beautiful late partner and friend would say as we watched. BTW, she had a special funnel with a wide opening that fits on the mason par when pouring the completed jam or sauce into the jar, thus keeping the open free of spillage and reducing the cleaning of the neck. Just thought I'd mention that. Hope you don't mind. It all looks so yummy, I can taste it through the screen. Please stay safe and follow the Doctor's instructions. God bless you two. 🙏🏼🤟🏼🖖🏼

I have always been petrified of swimming pools with little kids around. it makes the atmosphere very tense always having to watch where the kids are going. once you have your baby you'll have another 10 months roughly before having to really worry about it, because they just don't move fast enough before then. so you have another 12 months to sort this out. but if i were you i would definitely try to put a simple metal fence all around the pool just so you can relax and not be stressed about having to teach the babies how to swim etc very early on. OR you can get some really clever covers now which you can use every time you're not swimming. the cover stays solid even if a light child stands on it. either a gate or a cover just to relax. Bravo for all your work. it's like extreme nesting. :)

Your filming is always glorious, I can smell those tomatoes in the sink, and the cooked sugo just looking at your footage, so much goodness! The blue toile de jouy is beautiful in the kitchen! If you do need a row of tiles there, that blue sample tile would be a lovely accent in the kitchen with all the warm earthy colors in there and that blue toile! Cooked ragu is best frozen not canned. A good sized freezer in the storage room is very handy to have, also for freezing baby food in the future, although I'd expect you'll be making fresh purées. With a large freezer in storage you don't need to plan for more than a fridge with a small icebox in your limited kitchen space. You look so healthy and radiant even in the heatwave with a bun in the oven, it's really remarkable! I have so many Italian tomato sauce stories, about love, loss, family and friends. In a way I think this tradition is central to the culture and is as much about preserving memories, sharing them and creating new ones as it is about not wasting the harvest. One of my friend's mother died some years ago, and her fathers way of dealing with his grief was growing a zillion tomatoes and cooking and canning sauce, to the extent she thought he'd gone crazy. They had an entire space like your cellar filled with sugo and passata and were giving jars and jars to everyone who'd take them, and it was just so moving how happy it made the old gentleman. Every single jar was a testament to the love of his late wife. 😭 I took as much as we could eat, because it was also the best sauce ever! The old man's youngest grandson, a teething baby in a high chair would sit next to grandad in only diapers with spaghetti and tomatosauce on the tray of his chair and chilled home made rustic sourdough bread dipped in olive oil to sooth the teething, and when he put any of these in his mouth with his little hands granddad cheered and boasted the boy was raised a proper Italian! Afterwards the old man would take the baby now covered in tomato sauce from head to toe and rinse him off in the garden sink. 😁 One thing's for sure, kids raised that way don't have any issues with eating or malnutrition! It's all about the love. ❤️ Too many stories to tell. My point is, you are making your own, and like these videos are a treasure for the future, your sugo is too, with a time stamp and everything! You have a very sound attitude about all the renos. It will all come together in time and fretting about it is pointless. Take care both of you! Baci! /Jo

Your Passata looks so delicious, watching you create this was a sensation. I could almost smell it, taste it, and feel the warmth and love that you put into it! Treat yourself to a jam/preserve funnel with a wide neck, place it on top of the jar and use a ladle to pour the sauce through the funnel into the jar. It will save you all that time from spooning it in and then having to wipe the inner and outer rim of the jar. When the jar is full, gently lift the funnel and place it on to the next jar without allowing it to drip between the two, so forth and so on. Tighten up the lids as you go and then re sterilise the full jars as you did. The pool is coming to life and it will be amazing! I hope that soon you will be able to get in, cool off swim and relax,

The sauce looks amazing 😍😍 the way my mother taught me to preserve jams and other veggie sauces is pouring them freshly boiled into jars and adding the lid immediately after. Of course first making sure the edges are clean. This way the lids will pop when the jars are opened. No other boiling is involved. With this method I preserved jams for 2 years without any mould being created. Oh, and I wrapped the jars in newspaper. Hope that helps. And I guess it's trial an error until you find a method which works for you. ❤️

I love the terra cotta tiles that you chose. I built a Tuscan house here in SoCal 3 years ago. I ended up buying handmade Terra Cotta from Spain. Approximately 4,000 square feet of it for the inside as well as the courtyard and patio. No regrets.

You're all looking well, Kylie. That's lovely to see. It is so relaxing and satisfying being able to preserve the fruit and vegetables that one harvests from one's own garden. My problem is that I give away more jars of jam, chutney or pickled veggies than I keep. I suppose I should be happy that my friends like them so much! I love your rustic kitchen, by the way! Take care and thank you🤗

Adding my thoughts late but many tomatoes are now developed to be less acidic; for this reason, canning manuals recommend the lemon juice addiction now. Looks delicious! Julie 🌷 a 💯 Dutch girl in the USA 🇺🇸

Congrats on the baby!! I have a 7 month old and I binge watched your channel after my Ollie was born during my maternity leave. Your videos are very soothing and I love them. A few things I wish someone had told me 8 months ago: 1. Babies are hard!! Be gentle with yourself and your husband as you learn your tiny new human! :) 2. Those people are right. You'll be so sleep deprived you will feel like you're just doing whatever you can to survive, BUT you wouldn't trade it for the world. and 3. Speaking from experience - I hope your breast feeding journey is everything you dream it will be but if it is not, be kind to yourself. (at least in the US) There is a lot of pressure to breastfeed and if it doesn't work out sometimes it can really affect the mom. Whatever happens just be kind to yourself and enjoy every second with your little one.

@@KylieFlavell Everyone's journey is different but I think you'll find that a lot people will say the beginning is the hardest. Once you find whatever works best for you is when it will get "easy". And I put easy in quotations bc being a breastfeeding mom is never easy, no matter what you do. Recognizing that and accepting that really helped me. I mean... for however long you breastfeed it controls your life.. how long you sleep, when you have to stop what you're doing and pump, etc. The stigma around breastfeeding and whether or not you're successful (and sometimes the resulting shame if not) seems like it keeps real discussions about breastfeeding from happening. I would love to tell you anything you want to know about breastfeeding (I don't comment on youtube very often and I don't even know if there is a DM option on here but I'll be happy to move to something like that for more in depth questions so feel free to DM if you like) but I'll just give you a few things by which I was caught unawares. And let me preface this by saying that I hope your journey is amazing and I say none of this to discourage you - I just would have appreciated the information beforehand. 1. In the beginning it is common for breastfeeding to be extremely painful. It really hurts. It took me 2 weeks to get to a point where it wasn't excruciating for me. Now, I am a redhead and the lactation consultant told me that people with lighter nipples usually have more pain. May not be the same for you. 2. As best as you can, try to be aware of if your little one is getting enough food. If your sweet baby cries all the time for no reason that you can tell, it could be your supply. 3. This is YOUR BABY. You are it's mama and what you choose to do is what's best for your family. If you try breast feeding and your little one has a great latch and your supply is amazing but you decide that for your mental health you just cannot do it THAT IS OK. BREAST FEEDING IS VERY HARD. Your baby will be just fine on formula. 4. Hormones play a HUGE part in the simplest decisions about breastfeeding and it bewildered me. I struggled for so long deciding to do 50/50 and I could not articulate a reason why I struggled, I just knew that if I thought too much about adding formula to the milk I would cry. Once I made the decision to do 50% formula and 50% breastmilk it was SUCH A RELIEF. It took such a burden off of me ( I work as a paramedic and we work 24 hr shifts so I had to have 24 hrs of breastmilk ahead of time) and Ollie was able to get the antibodies from me but also have extra nutrients from formula. It is absolutely the best decision I made in my breastfeeding journey but it was a hard one for me... because of hormones. So be gentle with yourself, whatever decisions you make, and allow yourself time to feel them out. It took me about 2 weeks to finally decide to add formula. Last tip I'll put here: if you plan on pumping get yourself a set of portable pumps. You don't have to get a super expensive set. I got a relatively inexpensive set off of amazon and I exclusively use them and I highly recommend.

Kyle, pressure Canning turned out to be easy once I got over the fear of pressure Canning. I just canned my first 6 quarts of my homemade grass fed beef bone broth and it was a success. I don't know why I was so scared. I bought my pressure canner over 2 months ago and just walked past it every day until I got up the confidence to finally use it. Ha, ha. Easy peasy. Don't overthink it like I did. You are going to be a phenomenal momma!! Children are truly our richest inheritance. Enjoy every moment!! ❤

In our family we do no put lemon juice in the sugo and we don't boil the filled jars, but just insert the fresh hot sugo in the jars and then turn them on their lids until they are cold. Thus the whole content is disinfected and you have the vacuum effect. As soon as you add fish or meat to the sugo (e.g. ragù), in our family we rely on single portions that we put in the freezer, I would not dare to keep them even in the cellar. Magnificent cellar, by the way! ♡

Don't worry in a couple of years you will be able to can food in your sleep. I have been re-using sealable jars for years. You will stop fussing and just do it. Its all about time. Time takes care of everything. If I may be so bold (and I will) that cellar stairs should have a railing on both sides, just for your safety. Blessings from Canada.

I cannot help but marvel at the way you have made this home bloom with vibrant life . I loved the way you canned all those luscious tomatoes into the gleaming jars, labelled them and patiently carried them down to the cellar , basket load by precious basket load. Beautiful blue and white tea towel with cups and saucers. And you even made time to stitch the prettiest sink curtain in wonderful Toile de Jouy fabric. The colours of your kitchen, beautifully polished sink taps , sturdy kitchen table heaving with the best produce of your kitchen garden....what more can you ask for? Heaven!

Hi Kylie...tip, if your contents of the jar is hot, and the jar is hot, you can put the lid on, turn them upside down, and they will vacuum seal themselves. I dont know if you have a dishwasher but I usually run jars and lids in the dishwasher and time it so all parts are hot when I fill. when I was pregnant I made jars and jars of baby applesauce....my baby hated applesauce.
