RENOVATING A RUIN: Day in Siena, Baby's 1st Birthday, 7-Layer Opera Cake, Building a Playhouse Ep 47

This episode we spend a day in Siena, celebrate our baby's first birthday and I bake the adults a seven layer chocolate and coffee cream opera cake. My father builds a DIY playhouse for Gianfranco and we continue the renovations of our farmhouse in Tuscany, Italy.

Every day I get so many emails and comments asking why you can’t locate the music I use or find it using Shazam. I purchase music licenses for almost all the music you hear in my videos. I buy them them from various royalty-free production music sites and most of the time they don’t list the performer because it’s music made only for film productions with an audio watermark throughout the entire track, unless you purchase the single-use license for $50-100 per track. I use a lot of opera so often I’ll reference the opera but I won’t be able to direct you to a recording of that specific performance that you could stream or buy on iTunes or Spotify. Hope that clears things up and thank you for appreciating quality music.

I have noticed that most Italian cooks use very simple methods such as hand mixing, cutting herbs with a knife nonna style, crushing chilis by hand, using a mortar and pestle. So refreshing not hearing the sound of motors in the kitchen yet listening to the beating of a wooden spoon against a ceramic bowl or whipping sounds of a whisk against the enamel pot. Brava!

I agree. So far I have no mobile phone, no dishwasher and no microwave. Love using tools rather than gadgets. I find the sound of electrical machinery very jarring. Not having machines also slows us down; good.

For the pool area, why not use a screen, attached to a frame, that will be easy to move when you are ready but keeps your little one out of the pool. There is a rod that goes into the ground and holds the screen in place. The frame could be plastic, vinyl or wood, and the screens are also different colors, some being used as sun screens on windows. I live in Arizona and many people use these screen fences to keep children and pets out of the pool area. Just a suggestion until you find what you want permanently. ❤ Happy First Birthday Gianfranco🎉

The rope fence is lovely, but he could very easily climb it! I would suggest something that is not able to be climbed because that is always a temptation for kids.

11:04 - that drawer paper is such a treasure. A photo could be taken and then a master at PhotoShop or Adobe Lightroom could clean it up to look like the day it was printed, and then print anew if you liked. An elegant, cheerful kitchen wallpaper on one wall perhaps? Or a fabric for summer furniture slipcovers...

Lovely video. The view out of your bathroom window is AMAZING! If I might. I have two suggestion. I would paint your bedroom the same color as your bathroom but one to two shades lighter. Secondly a pool fence is a very good idea I would also enroll Gianfranco in swimming classes now. He's not too young to learn.

Kylie they have an automatic safety pool cover… And also rolling decks.. So many choices to choose from it can be very overwhelming, but for the peace of mind it’s worth it! Love the natural stonewall with gate around the pool too❤

We spent the month of September in a villa we rented outside the town of Montevarchi. We had various guest throughout the month and picking where to go to make the most of our time was difficult. We opted to not visit Siena and now I wish we had. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Tuscany. The towns we did visit we would go into the local owned places and avoided the tourist traps. We were shocked to see how inexpensive food and drink were compared to the USA. We plan to visit again in the future. Your videos really helped with our visit.

Happy birthday sweet boy!🎉 I would be tempted to use black iron fencing. Iron seems to be in keeping with aged buildings. Black also seems to disappear as you look through it. You have great taste Kylie & you are very sensitive to preserving, while updating, the aged buildings & surroundings so whatever you choose it will be beautiful!

When you have 'dressed' your bedroom it will take on a completely different feel to the bathroom, despite having the same wall colour! Kylie! Maintain the bathroom colour throughout. It is perfect in your Tuscan light and provides continuity and brightness. You do not want to darken that wonderful space! I think that you alight bout the rope being tempting for wee ones to climb. A more expensive choice, admittedly, but appropriate for your home would be metal railings but looking at the length of the pool, it would be prohibitively expensive. What about a picket fence. Or the fencing material I always see in UK gardens that are sort of horizontal wavy, and rustic but cut down to the proper height. As this is often used, I get the sense it may not be too expensive. Plus, as it ages, it will turn to a lovely silvery colour. Possibly, though, that might obstruct your view of the glorious blue of the water. Lovely vlog. Thanks, Kylie!

Oh Kylie, this post was so wonderful! The scenes from Sienna reminded me so much of our travels there. I also take so many photos of the architecture and those gorgeous ceilings! And happy birthday sweet Gianfranco! I'm sure he was thrilled with his bowl of pears. And that cake...oh my, what a special, decadent treat! Tough decision with bedroom color. The color of the bathroom glows because of the amount of light, so it might take on a different hue with the side windows, but it is certainly warm and inviting. And, kudos on your choices for your musical soundtrack...absolutely beautiful!
