Hey Shayna, electrical engineer here. So first thing - what happened with the first two wires is pretty simple, for electricity to flow it needs a completed circuit, which means something that conducts that will make it go from point A to point B. When you tucked this two wires you found on the wall together, you probably made the metallic parts touch, which created what we call a short circuit, you completed the circuit and suddenly the electricity had a connection to flow through. Usually short circuits are dangerous because if you simply use a cable to create this connection, instead of lets say a light bulb or a phone charger there’s no “resistance” in the middle, so the electrons are free to flow and the cables quickly heat up and probably even melt from the high heat. So always be very careful when handling cables and never let two random cables touch each other. As for the problem per say, the solution is very simple, if you don’t want electricity to flow all you need to do is avoid completing the circuit. There’s a lot of ways you can do this, some people put caps on exposed wires, others just buy electrical tape and put it over the metal part that is exposed. You really don’t have to worry a lot about this, because from the moment you cover it with something that doesn’t conduct electricity like a cap or electrical tape the circuit will never complete, so the electrons have nowhere to go and will never flow through that bit of wire. (Just be careful while doing this and turn off all the circuit breakers/all electricity to avoid getting shocked, as it turns out our bodies conduct electricity and can also complete the circuit :p) Another cool thing is your wall or w/e you bought to cover the holes also doesn’t conduct electricity so as long as the cables are inside the wall and not touching other cables you will be safe. Feel free to ask any questions related to this. :)

@@virginiacreager4331 what the guy meant with that is that probably that same cable goes through other outlets or connections in the kitchen. So removing that cable would mean cutting the circuit there which would make it stop working. Usually when electricians want to do something about random cables they have three options: 1 - disconnect the cable from the electrical box and leave it there, since it is now just a random cable in the wall. For this case, it wouldn’t work because the cable is being used to either provide electricity or to close the circuit from the kitchen. 2 - take the cable completely out of the wall or the section that doesn’t matter. This is always possible, but sometimes very impractical to do. Older buildings rarely have nice cables pass-through and taking the cables out could involve breaking the wall. This a very bad solution, since you can always break other cables in the process or you can accidentally break the wrong section of the wall and then you just added extra costs to the whole thing. 3 - cap or put electrical tape over the cable ( always works and takes a lot less work) I’d say option 2 and 2 should only be considered if your doing a whole electrical overall of the place, otherwise it’s not worth it. Also some extra info on cables in general, in your home you usually have 3 kinds of cables. They are color coded , each country usually has it’s own system and each color means a different type of cable. The 3 cables are: 1 - live - this cable transports the electrons from the electrical grid and is the dangerous one, always be very careful while handling live cables; 2 - neutral - this cable is used to close the circuit, it transports the used electrons back to the grid. Very rarely dangerous on it’s own unless you make a cut in a used cable, even then the shock will be very small. 3 - ground - this is used to send all extra abnormal charges to somewhere, mostly static electricity, but if some other extra charge suddenly happens we also sent it through the ground cable. This cable like the name says is connected to the ground. Also really not that dangerous unless you touch it during a very specific time. There also other set ups, but this 3 cables one is the most common.

This is the shit in France I am sick off! However, one thing I did learn is that once you are stuck like this you go and see a lawyer and let them comunicate next steps instead of you. Usually one e-mail/conversation fixes a lot of things (yes, they are afraid). For example, I was not getting my titre de sejour sorted and prefecture was ignoring me for months and months and then asking extra documents that do not concern me, where I reached the point where my rights will expire because I was waiting way too long for them to finish their part of the job. I went to see a lawer, explain situation, and after she contacted them that day my everything was finished in 1 day. 1 fucking day! E-mails and trace is a must and next step is a lawyer. I completely get your frustration as I am nice person, and hate to be the bitch, but at the same time you need to protect yourself. Best of luck and a lot of patience!

Shayna I encourage you to reach out to your community for assistance with this. I think as western women were made to think we have to do everything ourselves to prove ourselves and honestly I’ve come to see that thinking as consumerist programming. You might have a friend who is naturally “hard” and it wouldn’t take any effort for them to call these aholes and even be there with you when they come to do work. I am a naturally soft fem woman that’s had to renovate my mom’s old country house on my own so I get the gaslighting by men techs. Doing everything on our own doesn’t prove our strength. Using our connections and team shows our intelligence. 🤝

I've been having the same experience lately of being myself yet still being walked over and condescended by men. It's not even "lately" rather something that happens on the regular. I too have considered lowering my voice so much so to the point where I even brought this up to my boyfriend and asked him if I "sound serious enough." It's disheartening the lengths women have to go to be taken seriously. It feels like character infringement to have to be stern and cold and not smile just because you want to be treated equally. I think in order to save yourself grief, the stern, straight face demeanor is something you should implement when it comes to dealing with contractors and to look into getting a lawyer who will light a fire under their a** when they aren't doing the work you paid for. You deserve a home you are safe in!

I've really been wresting with being a person that consistently exhibits a kind, agreeable exterior; the problem with this is that other people get used to my people pleasing tendencies and get surprised and upset when I speak up for myself. For instance, I could say the *same exact thing* at work that my male boss says (and is taken seriously with), but it will be taken completely differently when coming from me. I feel like I can't complain and bring up legitimate concerns without feeling guilty or like I've been a "bitch" about it. Thank you for sharing honestly. It really helps me feel less alone.

I just moved to Paris myself (I'm also an artist) and I'm sad but not surprised to know that men treat us women the same here where we have to speak and act differently to be taken seriously and not be taken advantage of. I do it a lot on public transit back home in SF and also act more masculine and such around men in male dominated spaces, like taking more space on the train or lowering my voice - or putting on the b*tch face and act like I know everything. It's hard for women to be respected and taken seriously. Oddly enough in my walks to and from school, I get guys trying to wave at me and talk to me more here than in the US. I have my facial piercings on full display and they're a big deterrent for men at home whereas here they don't seem to care (even tho it's still more conservative minded for appearance here supposedly!). Thank you for your advice regarding emails! I'll use them more often, which is no problem for me cause I like proof and hate talking on the phone lol.

I’d like to offer a perspective that may not be the universal truth…but as an older woman I have lots of experience in this arena. First of all, there are many workmen who do lousy work and don’t care about the quality of their work…and display this lack of regard to female and male clients, though women probably do get short changed more often. If you say these guys can be motivated by emails, perhaps you can leave a negative review of their poor quality work. Next, now matter where your moon is rising, anybody would be frustrated to pay for work, treat the workman respectfully and then live in fear of a fire in the wall of one’s home. Your response was totally reasonable. Please. Give yourself some grace. I’d like to give you a hug!

Shayna, you are tops! And you have great astrological placements. Pisces moon gives you a lot of your creativity and we are cool!!! You are so correct, when hiring contractors and being ourselves these people think they can get away with it. Thank God in the USA we can give them a lousy review, call Small business etc etc and never ever pay until you are satisfied!!! Take the longest time they give you to pay just in case. Thank God it is over now and hey!!! I love that Palm tree!!! hugs

I think it’s not necessarily a gender-based problem. Usually, when a person is cheerful, friendly, and kind, people think they can take an advantage on them. My male friend has the same issue with car mechanics etc.

You are lucky you didn't touch that wire, especially believing everything was in order, you shouldn't just forget about it and let it ride ,turn that company in to the proper authorities , they put you in a very dangerous position. ❤
