You probably already know all of this well, but I’ll say it just in case you’re not experienced with pointing stone. I’m a retired bricklayer so I’ll offer my advice and hope you don’t mind. The best tool to use would be a flat 10 mm pointing bar, preferable a Marshaltown make, they’re the best. Then using a small homemade hawk at the joint push the mortar into the joints then finish by rubbing down with a flat piece of stick. This is the best way of making sure your joints are filled. A pointing trowel doesn’t work so well in the irregular stone joints as you would be using it at an angle. Oh and you always start pointing at the top. I’m a Dubliner but I lived for a time in a cottage in your part of the country, and I always watch your videos. Hope you don’t mind me saying all this.

That's great! We need all the advice we can get. The stone work is the bit Sam & I are most inexperienced in. Sadly, we don't have the budget for professionals but getting advice from one is fantastic. Thank you.

good points; but lime needs to be churned with a churn brush..😄
@mikki3562

I have also known for a small bit of cement being used in the lime-sand mortar. It helps to set, makes the mortar slightly easier to work with, and doesn't go too hard altering the essential purpose of the lime mortar pointing which is to allow for any movement in the stonework. But it is just an opinion which some people might not agree with.@@florentinalily

@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead 11 ай бұрын
There are other donkeys over the way, and I think it's them he is calling to. We will eventually think about a friend but want him to settle here and trust us first. He is not hungry as I'm feeding him hay, barley straw a balancer, & pink mash. Remember, he came from an open field with no shelter or extra feed so he is 100% better off here. I am in contact with the donkey rescue place in Ireland for advice. Some donkeys do just prefer their own company apparently but if he can hear a female he will call. Gelding him is something I'm considering which will hopefully help with him being able to have another donkey friend, but it's risky with his older age. We both just need time and I don't want to rush unto any decisions we regret. ♥️

SO jealous of your FABULOUS insulation sheets. We used these when rebuilding our schoolhouse - and as Pat, our contractor said at the time…”you can heat the whole house with a candle.” He was right. Two years ago I built the studio out of what had been the old school lavatory - each of those sheets were quoted @ €79 EACH. Just could NOT afford them, and had to go with less expensive roll-out insulation. I’ve been freezing ever since. You’re going to LOVE how warm those big, chunky panels will keep you!
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead 11 ай бұрын
Ahh, yes, they are not cheap! But glad to hear they do the job! The price has come down a bit now as we didn't pay that much! But it was still around €50 a sheet! It's not good that you're feeling chilly, though. 😢
@janechamblesswright119
@janechamblesswright119 11 ай бұрын
@@theirishhomestead - as long as I keep the stove burning, the studio is OK and not TOO cold most days. It’s just getting things started up there that is frosty and clammy and I can’t wait for sunshine again. Firewood, kindling and coal keeps things manageable - and that is a really GOOD PRICE on those insulation sheets!

Love your intro with the Rooster! What a good job on the removal of the old render. It's going to look marvelous. Hard work, but well worth it. What crazy weather! Great idea to throw all in the trolley and take cover. Getting everything delivered on site will make things move along in a timely fashion...unless the weather has something to say about it! Aww, Toby...such a love. Well done! Sending heaps of hugs to the critters. Cheers to you all from Canada 🇨🇦🎉✨

@@theirishhomestead Christmas is an admirable target! Where there's a will, there's a way. You'll have good weather through the Spring, Summer and early Fall, so that will only help in your goals. Don't forget to take breaks tho. No burnout allowed. Cheers from sunny Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦🫶🌞
