The Irish Homestead

Күн бұрын

Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months we have bought a derelict farm in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing as much of the work ourselves. Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get!
This week its more old mortar removal and Sam tiles behind our log burner in the caravan.

They won’t be ok if they keep removing all the small stones…those walls need them for strength.

The ones which are loose are not supporting anything. We have been advised to remove all loose stones by a stone mason and we will be putting them back with lime mortar when we get to the pointing stage. Obviously any small stones that are in tight, are load-bearing and we leave them in situ.

All winds and all weathers…I don’t know how you guys keep it all grinding forward. What remarkable folks you are - made of sturdy stuff, indeed. The snow took us by surprise (neither one of us can bear watching the news in these dark days) - so I guess we missed the weather report… Spent the day slithering up and down the hill to the studio, (carrying somebody else’s antique oil paintings) and slipped onto my butt more than once. Thank the godds of snow that I didn’t drop the artwork. The hens are doing themselves proud. Toby seems comfortable (possibly for the first time in years) The kids look well - and you are both Legends. Well done to you all!

I know! The snow was very unexpected. I saw a notification the night before but just thought "oh yeah let's see".....and they got it right this time! I'd like to think Toby is much more comfortable. So nice he was a load of straw to lay in too if he wants. The hens are doing us proud especially as often they don't lay until the warmer weather comes. Glad you didn't damage any expensive art work! ♥️👍

Tiles have transformed the corner, made it homely, Wouldn't the bedroom anex be better, as kitchen/dinner?, It's likely to be cooler than the main house, Just looks as big as the house, could be the busy area? And have the house, as the cosy area, I'm just thinking out loud, Toby definitely has settled, I was so surprised to see him as soon as you called him for a carrot, didn't take long, he has a family at last.

With the concrete you find on the floor thats a start. it gives you a stable base to work from . The weather doesnt help but it gives you a break from what may seem like an endless task. The tiles look good and its an improvement to your life. Nice one Sam and Bec crack on

When building drystone walls, the middling was an important part of holding the wall together. Stones would be slightly sloped in and the middling would hold them in place. Imagine old buildings were similar.
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead 11 ай бұрын
Yes there are lots sloped and what we can probably see in the voids is the middling stones. We will add those smaller stones back in one we back point the walls. Fi gers crossed it holds until the good weather comes for pointing.
@anthonystevens749
@anthonystevens749 11 ай бұрын
If the walls are structured like similar buildings in Wales, this is not quite accurate. They are built to two faces, with quite a lot of random rubble fill. Periodically the builders used larger stones to tie between the two faces: all these face stones and tie stones are sloped 'down & out' - ie, laid with a slope to naturally shed water outwards. This is a vital principle of porous wall structures, which (unlike modern Portland cement based work) are designed to accept a degree of wetting, draining and evaporative drying with lime mortar. Good luck guys, it'll look fantastic! 👍
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead 11 ай бұрын
@anthonystevens749 thanks. Yes we watch D Porter Construction on KZbin and he mentioned the stones sloped for water removal. So much to learn on these stone buildings. 👍

@@theirishhomestead I grew up in California horse country where they were primarily fed hay, alfalfa and oats, but for treats they got apples and raw almonds from our orchards and carrots from the garden. Great job but just a heads up on those little stone. If you really look at it, you can see how they were used to level the big stones. And behind the front row there is a space inbetween the inside wall that gets filled up with mud and rubble. That holds the two sides together. If you start taking too much of that out the walls will weaken. Get the outside cleaned up, fill back inside the openings with mortar and little stones, then you can get to the outside repointing. ❤❤ good work and love the tiling on the walls by wood stove.

The tiling trial is for you to do your own bath and kitchen or main house... Toby looks like he is enjoying his new living palace... Chickens usually start laying after 26 weeks of birth but you can put paprika in there water to warm them up to lay more eggs...keep the shell as you can give that back to them for calcium...wash it dry it the micrawave 10 sec...then crush it put in they seed dish also minced garlic and oil great for them aswell as oil stop them from getting egg bound... Also soaking there seeds is better for them more vitamins...😂❤😂❤

If you want more eggs, use a trick - connect two halves of the shell to make a whole egg and put the dummies in the nest. The chickens will see that the nest is safe and will lay eggs better and will not have to hide eggs in the area.

Sam may not be a tiler, but he has all the skills for doing beautiful work! The tiles look beautiful -- love the patterns in them. And your grouting is quite pretty too! It's lovely how the chickens trust you. They may be eating little pieces of that gravel for grit, which is essential for their digestion. They're so pretty :) You two are such a great pair, so much love and respect between you, you work well together. Makes for a great work environment! I love your channel, but honestly -- I would watch it JUST for Toby, haha. He's such a love. When the weather is warmer and nice, just think of all you'll get done!

Hello. Just found your channel and gone to when you bought the farm. Great viewing, and I can't believe you only have 18k subs. We are renovating an old Manor, and it's hard work. But keep going and try not to start too many projects at once, or it will get overwhelming. You probably know, but get some decent gloves, I have started wearing them as they save the cuts. Good luck.
