Finally, the renovation of the second-ground started in earnest today.　Father Momotaro has been on the alert since morning because of the noise of the work. The other gorillas were not particularly concerned.
Momotaro will be wary for a while until he gets used to the sound of the work.
Hopefully he won't find any workers wearing helmets.
Momotaro did not eat much breakfast, so Mother Genki was able to eat more than usual.

Father MOMOTARO ♂(2000/7/3)　
He is hesitant in new situations and is a loner.
His father died before he was born, and he had never spent time with a silverback.
He had already turned into a silverback by the time he was 10 years old.
He is struggling with unfamiliar child-rearing.
MOMOTARO's father is BIJU.
MOMOTARO's mother is MOMOKO
　　
Mother GENKI ♀ (1986/6/24)　　　
She is 14 years older than Momotaro and has a role to support the whole family mentally.
She has had a tumultuous and eventful life.
She has returned to her birthplace, Kyoto City Zoo.
She had never been blessed with a baby but after meeting Momotaro,
she had two sons.
She is a very maternal female gorilla.
GENKI's father is MAC.
GENKI's mother is HIROMI.
First son GENTARO, male (2011/12/21)
He was separated from his mother Genki soon after he was born.
Genki's milk production was not very good.
He was raised by his keeper for his first10 months.
Because of this, he is very fond of humans.
His face is so expressive, and everyone enjoys watching him.
Second son KINTARO ♂ (2018/12/19)
He is just very strong-willed and independent.
He has big eyes and long eyebrows.
The way he plays a lot with his brother Gentaro makes everyone smile.
We can't wait to see what kind of gorilla he'll become!

I love the gentleman who gives us information on each gorilla progress and their well being. I love the questions and answers he gives us on Facebook. I'm all in on this gorilla family. I give praise to your entire zoo staff. I live in the USA, but your zoo stands out. I've heard that it was a small zoo, but it's the best to me. You guys and girls deserve a 10 for your professionalism. Please consider putting Annie with Gentaro, he will be a great Silverback.

When they moved Momotaro it was horrific to watch. Every was frantic and talking loudly and banging of cage and chains. It was not the peaceful transition it should have been so no wonder he is traumatised.

He needs to train to go on rotation, and to allow some alone time for himself...Many zoos rotate their animals daily, it's a little jump into independence for him, because the conflict between he and Momotaro will increase as he matures.

Wondering what will be Genki's mental state when Gentaro is separated because she suffers from PTSD due to all her trauma with Bijou, not being able to nurse Gentaro, and was very protective when Kintaro was born. How will Kyoto Zoo address this?

He is very attached to first son, for him Gentaro his first playmate, his little brother (taking into account how young was Momo when Gen was born), they have strong bonds. It was said that when Gentaro has not eaten well, Momo as well lost his appetite. So Kintaro could recover well, but Momo... I'm not sure.

​@@timm_Rudigerwe all have to think positively for Gentaro..this has to be done, his transition needs to take place, we had a 7yr old male transferred to a bachelor troop at my zoo, it's always rough at first, we have to trust the keepers. Separations happen all the time in the zoo world. We have to think of what's best for him, the others will be fine in time. That's how I am seeing it.

There is a connecting door now. Before construction when the zoo was closed to the public, the area was opened, and the gorillas could enter at will. The zookeepers will be able to view the area and have contact with Gentaro. They will be able to pass items through the bars as they do inside the Gorilla House.

I must have missed the info about the sub ground. Can someone please tell me if that is going to be Gentaros and his mates home, or a temporary place for him before he moves? Is it going to be bigger and better then where they are now? If yes, why not move the entire family there and fix up the place bigger and better where they are now and then decide who goes where?God, I pray they all benefit for the best in this scenario.

It's mainly going to be for training for Gentaro and his move into independence. it is not big enough for the 4 of them. Chiba zoo owns Gentaro, so we have to wait and see what they will do for him. Until then, this room will be used for some bachelor time for Gentaro.

If there are any workers with white helmets they should paint the helmets a darker color like blue to see if that keeps Momo from getting upset.

It has nothing to do with a color. Momotaro can recognize who is a worker or wears a helmet. He is not worried even if someone wears a hat or cap similar to a helmet. He is smart. Any kinds of helmets frighten him. ( real ones)

Just my opinion, but I don’t like the sound of “sub-ground”. That makes me think dark, gloomy, no sunlight, no fresh air. It would be ok on a rainy day or a too hot day if it was climate controlled, so all the family can come and go, but not for Gentaro to be there all alone!

Sub ground? That means under ground. That would be crazy. They need a lot more room above ground. Like the Shabani group. With greenery of the D'jeeco group. To me, a zoo should NOT be allowed to have a Gorilla breeding program until they have more then adequate room. This place is not it. Just dirt, steel and concrete is horrible.

​@@epicFrogmanyes, agree...there is no room for expansion as the zoo is surrounded by city buildings and a canal on one side...They did a major renovation about 2014 including the high iron structure...while there is little ground space, there is a lot of vertical room for them. (We would all enjoy seeing more room, but unless they use an already existing structure, I don't see it happening.) Not to mention the expense...they did get 2m yen for the zoo so we can see what happens as time goes on.

普段から休園日には、サブグラウンドは開放されてきました。今回の工事はリフォームです。サブグラウンドの中に、遊具やタワーなどを設置されたと思われます。サムネイルの画像のようなもの。 そして、ゲンタロウやキンタロウが親離れする為に使われると言われています。飼育下ですので、親との距離を自分では取りずらい。なので、こういうグラウンドで、ゲンタロウやキンタロウが独りで過ごせるようにして、自立を促すのです。 広さは、室内観覧室とほぼ同じぐらいです。高さも同じくらい。 ですから、サブグラウンドだけで生活させるわけではないでしょう。あくまで自立しやすいようにグラウンドを利用する。 これは、今のゴリラ舎を建設する際にゲンタロウを人工哺育された長尾飼育員の案だと聞いています。 ゲンタロウが大人になった時に、自立できるようにとサブグラウンドを建設要望を出したと聞いたことがあります。 ついに、本当の意味で、サブグラウンドが使われるようになるのです。

Good to see you here! No, it isn't. That particular space is located elsewhere in the zoo and is currently being used by other animals; I believe a troop of monkeys. This is a space located to the side of where the zookeeper stands to look out on the grounds. The small area is behind the black doorway where Momotaro enters and sits usually eating some type of browse. It is a small area that was, before the construction, usually open to the gorillas on the days when the zoo was closed to the public. The zookeepers will be able to have contact with Gentaro and be able to pass items between the bars as they do elsewhere in the Gorilla House. I just reread your comment and see that you specifically asked GL; sorry if I intruded. Happy gorilla watching!
