He is hesitant in new situations and is a loner.
His father died before he was born, and he had never spent time with a silverback.
He had already turned into a silverback by the time he was 10 years old.
He is struggling with unfamiliar child-rearing.
MOMOTARO's father is BIJU.

Mother GENKI ♀ (1986/6/24)　　　
She is 14 years older than Momotaro and has a role to support the whole family mentally.
She has had a tumultuous and eventful life.
She has returned to her birthplace, Kyoto City Zoo.
She had never been blessed with a baby but after meeting Momotaro,
she had two sons.
She is a very maternal female gorilla.
GENKI's father is MAC.
GENKI's mother is HIROMI.
First son GENTARO, male (2011/12/21)
He was separated from his mother Genki soon after he was born.
Genki's milk production was not very good.
He was raised by his keeper for his first10 months.
Because of this, he is very fond of humans.
His face is so expressive, and everyone enjoys watching him.
Second son KINTARO ♂ (2018/12/19)
He is just very strong-willed and independent.
He has big eyes and long eyebrows.
The way he plays a lot with his brother Gentaro makes everyone smile.
We can't wait to see what kind of gorilla he'll become!

Thank you for this story of Genki’s past. It is interesting that gorillas show the same reactions to loneliness, rejection and loss that humans can have: depression, weight loss, bulimia and self-harm. It's such a blessing that Genki now has two fine sons from Momotaro, carrying on Biju’s genes.

That is so sad about how Biju died. Genki truly loved him by not leaving his side when he passed. Genki has been through way too much. She is such a sweet and beautiful gorilla. I'm thankful she is okay now. Kintaro is such a mess. Full of shenanigans messing with his Mom. 😅🤣😂 He is too funny. ❤❤❤❤ 🦍

I've always thought Genki was a very kind gorilla. Momoko is a dominant female and a bit of a bully. Momoko is better with her own family minus many females. Toto is very non threatening to Momoko. I think Momoko was jealous of Biju's affection for the pretty, kind Genki. I've always liked Genki more 😉.

Additional information about Biju: He has a daughter, Bandi, born in March 1997, living at ZooParc de Beauval in France. Her mother, Kabinda, also lives at the zoo and is now 41 years of age. Happy gorilla watching to you! 🦍🦍

Personally I think now that she has her boys she’s settled into an almost content and comfortable life with Mo because he’s not chasing her around to mate (because he’s not really sure what he’s donning bless him) she appears ok with that, a very sad story however had these events not happened we wouldn’t have her boys, so there is a sliver lining there. Her grief was caused by humans and their decisions. Maybe the story of what human's did to Momoko and Momotaro when he was 2 years old, that was just horrible. Separating mother and son so they could breed her with another silverback which failed. Momotaro would scream for his mother and she was stressed.

Hi Nina - Silverback Gon lived at Kyoto until his death in 2009. He and Genki mated but had no offspring. Silverback Kenta lived at Kyoto until 2004, I do not know if he and Genki mated but it seems possible. There was also a female gorilla named Yasuko who lived at Kyoto until May of 2003. So even after her mother, Hiromi, died in 2008, Genki was not completely alone. Happy New Year and happy gorilla watching in 2024!

I’d just like to say that it’s difficult to compare a financially strapped zoo like Kyoto with the San Diego zoo, arguably one of the top zoos in the world. The financial resources are incomparable. It is my understanding that the separate space being developed for Gentaro, and possibly Kinny is an attempt to create a “batchelor” situation within the constraints of the zoo. I know there has been consultation with other zoos. As mentioned by others, there are quite limited mating opportunities in Japan… so far. Perhaps more collaboration with European, and even American zoos is something we can all look forward to in future.

Genki's mother died & she was wild born. I've been trying to find out which silverback injured her severely. Genki's father didn't have much history either. Beautiful Genki came from humble beginnings. Don't forget that Biju's father Sired 27 offspring. Very impressive!

The way I look at it Genki still has problems,its great she has Kintaro, which makes it better, but Momentaro wasn't attracted to her, just when she was in heat, and ran from her and hit her, she got tired of chasing him, now he is more mature and comes to her rarely and she doesn't want nothing to do with him,he made her that way,she tired of it sometimes and trys to stay out of his way, when he greets her she leaves,she really has never had a love, and still dont, and she hadn't paid attention to Gentaro since he was 7 years old and now he don't want anything to do with her,but at least she has Kintaro.Its sad but the truth,I don't sugar coat, what I don't see,I do think that Momentaro has finally got love for Genki, but doesn't know how to show her, and she doesn't care anymore.

They keep telling different stories the first story I heard was that Biju didn't want Giki.They said that he wanted momo mom and Giki started to bite her fingers off.So they decided to send Giki back with her mother and that she was not with him when he died momo mom was.

Biju is Momotaro’s father. At the same time , he was the gorilla Genki fell in love with . Biju and Momotaro look alike. Biju died before Momotaro was born, though.
