it is the coat that Angel buys him, but its the one that was stolen from him in the beginning of the play/movie when he was beaten and robed. and thats when they met.

Paul Ostrom Yeah, I know that now. I wrote this after seeing the movie, and I saw the show after writing this.

Since this is loosely based on "La Boheme" it's possible that the coat is a tribute to Colline who sells his coat to buy medicine for Mimi.

I cant stop thinking about Mark.... he's gonna have to see all his friends (Roger, Mimi, Collins) die in the same way Angel did... he's living the first of a series of funerals, each one of them will be with another missing friend.
@ErixTheRed8 жыл бұрын
I hate that they cut the scene that really develops Mark's character. Rodger: "Mark has got his work", they say, "Mark lives for his work," and, "Mark's in love with his work." Mark hides in his work | Mark: From what? | R: From facing your failure, facing your loneliness, facing the fact you live a lie. Yes! you live a lie; tell you why. You're always preaching not to be numb, when that's how you thrive. You pretend to create and observe when you really detach from feeling alive. | M:Perhaps it's because I'm the one of us to survive

I find the most amazing rent trivia fact that Jesse Martin actually worked at the Moondance Diner with Jonathan Larson and was even trained by him. He really knew Jonathan longer than anyone else involved with the show and when he sang this song the day Jonathan died, in the play it was for angel but in reality it was for Jonathan. Talk about heartbreaking

Something just hit me about this scene. At the end, when they're singing "525, 000 seasons of LOOOOOOVE", Mimi looks back at Roger and then back at Collins. This death had a unique meaning for all of them, but to Mim, it was a jarring reminder of what she was living with. AIDS killed Angel, and she, Roger, and Collins had AIDS. This must have been terrifying for them to see what it will be like at the end.
@bootes539 жыл бұрын
I'll make it even sadder and remind you that 20 years ago when this first came out, AIDS was still wracking NYC and still generally a death sentence--probably a significant portion of the audience every night who watched this was HIV+, knowing either they and/or their partner would be going through it more likely than not. This was one of the elements that made "Rent" go groundbreaking and such a success at the time
@pellemckruth40709 жыл бұрын
I am going to add to the sadness; the characters from the life support group (Pam, Sue, Gordon, Ali) are all as a tribute named after Jonathan Larssons friends who died from Aids.

Watching this, I've just realized how foreshadowed Angle's death was. 1. His/her name is ANGEL. 2. It's always too good to be true when you see a character in a movie and immediately fall in love with them. Happiness like that doesn't exist.3. The first "I'll Cover You" foreshadows Angel's death: "When you're worn out and tired/When your heart has expired"P.S.: Does anyone else feel the overwhelming urge to sing along with this song at the top of their lungs no matter where you are, how many times you've listened to it, or how bad you're voice sucks? He's such a good singer. So glad this has 1.8 million views. And it's about a man and a transwoman in a relationship. And Tracie Thoms showed up to the funeral just to slay that abrupt interruptive note. Thank you Tracie Thoms.

i think that angel is a drag queen, not a transgender woman, in 'you see' collins says 'i like boys' while looking at angel, so colins is a gay black man dating a drag queen
@legoshirocha2 жыл бұрын
@@fabiotavares346 i think you can interpret this as a trans experience since it fits perfect as well for everyone that can relate.

Makes me cry every time. Went to see the show the other night with people that didn't know that Angel dies, and we all cried during this song.

I don't think of this song as negative or sad. I think of it as a declaration of deep love, and therefore a beautiful and positive thing!

Well he was the one who paid for Angel's funeral, something not included in the movie. There's also the fact that he barely knew Angel
@NextMerckx7 жыл бұрын
Lily Nguyen Yes, that exactly. Angel was friends with Mimi and his old circle, not with Benny himself, and he absolutely has a redemption moment paying for Angel's expenses when the rest can't.

Oh my gosh. For whatever reason when Collins' head fell at the end then he turned around, thats the part that really made me cry. It's like he's turning around to see if its really true. If Angel is really in there.

Nooo! I wiped this scene from my memory.... I totally forgot Angel died :(((( But I guess for a group of people with AIDS in NYC in the winter without heat, some death in unavoidable and it’s what makes what their singing about before (will I lose my dignity) even more powerful, because this is their reality.
@jessisbored02277 жыл бұрын
I can't help thinking that the song literally covers their entire relationship. Angel found Collins alone on the street after he'd been mugged (when you're cold and you're lonely) she bought him a coat because he didn't have any money of his own (you've got one nickel only) then when Collins is holding him on the subway (when you're worn out and tired) then hugging him as he takes his last breaths and at the funeral (when your heart has expired)

I’ve watched this over the years probably about 50 something times ... I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Masterful performance , in every soft, strong crescendo, minor and major note hit it’s absolutely beautiful and heart felt. My favorite part of the movie

I know a lot of people say the best songs or parts is either Take Me or Leave Me or La Vie Boheme, which are great fun songs that I love too, but something about this song and the way that Jesse Martin sings it. He really makes me feel the loss. This is probably my favorite part of the movie.

I wanna show you guys something cool. In the beginning at the video it shows eveyone seated in the background. Notice how Roger is parallel to Mimi, its resembling how they were once together and now they are separated and are no more. In the next row you see Joanne sitting parallel to Maureen. It's stating also that they were once together and now are not a couple anymore. It's pretty cool
@bleachfan36810 жыл бұрын
.... I have no words.... for how fucking obvious that was. Maybe if the cinematographers hadn't made a point to show that EXACTLY I'd be a little impressed, but it was really pointless to say that because it's actually made clear intentionally by the creators of the film.
@bleachfan36810 жыл бұрын
If you wanted to be the inquisitor you would have been better off pointing out how Mimi and Benjamin (though sitting right next together and in a relationship) couldn't have been further from each other, as is shown in the way that they are looking almost exactly in opposite directions from each other when first shown.
@elenaablard623710 жыл бұрын
that is so cool I never noticed that
@sundance137210 жыл бұрын
Actually, Roger is in the second row and Mimi in the third, and Maureen is also in the third and Joanne in the fifth. So they are not parallel. But if by "parallel" you mean that Mimi and Joanne are in the left group of rows and Roger and Maureen in the right one, yes they are.
