Carbon arc gouging is a blast! When I worked as a railcar mechanic, there wasn't a bolt too big or too tight it couldn't loosen. Eventually I got one for my home hobby shop. Just be careful not to stick your leg with it while 'white hot'. It doesn't hurt too bad, and rarely bleeds. Love the video.

Greetings! Just wanted to offer a little advice here when running into “arc blow” problems on metal that is magnetized. First off, I’m not going to lie and pretend like I have tons of experience with arc blow due to magnetized steel. I’m just a welder that’s kind of a nerd and likes to read up on all things welding. Next time you run into this, try running 2 ground clamps; One as close as possible to each end of the weld joint. This, in theory, will disrupt the magnetic field that is present and will allow the weld to deposit normally or closer to normal anyway. It’s worth a shot. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work. Love the content.

Really liking all the vids so far, especially the hydraulic pistons, rods and barrels. As someone who repair quite a few buckets yearly this one had me wondering why? on several methods used. Stuff that differ from the usual way i do it. Removing old base edge, i take the oxy / acy x11 no4 nozzle and cut that one of..prob 30 min work for a bucket as clean / simple as that one. I try to straighten the bucket floor if possible (crazy how most grading buckets turn up at the shop with the bottom hammered up in the middle). I always try to get a good weld angle and never weld from bellow. Why not getting the base edge holes counter sunk to save those nuts from wearing out when you got decent thicknes on the part? Not saying my way is the way to go, i hope i don't come across as a know it all keyboard warrior asshole. Well thats enough rambling from my part, and i hope i didn't mess up the English completly, since i am a Swedish Swede. /Emil.

@Stanley Banks Stanley, i do'nt want to go into a who's got the biggest, or heaviest equipement. Or what is best . I was just asking Kurtis about those gouging electrodes. I worked for those guys, ok www.masse-constructionsmetalliques.fr/constructions-metalliques-briancon on the aluminium windows side. But the workshops are next to each others! I was born in a similar type of businnes and seen a fait bit of metal when i was a kid. Work here in the winter. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qne5e4Sio6mesNU I was aware of gouging electrodes. But i have never seen one in person. And realy thought it was kind of a thing of the past. May be different country, different customs.

The repair work on these machines is fascinating, as a bystander you never appreciate how large these materials are until you see them this close. It looks like your repairing a tank!

You do really good work and you can tell you love your job and seem happy to go to work everyday. I was like that.i was a carpenter for 35 years. Now my body is all messed up. I can't do the heavy work anymore so now I do woodworking in my garage. It makes me happy to still be able to work with my hands and tools.

Hey Kurtis! Love the channel and Homey! What was the deal with the replacement plate being near a magnet so you couldn't weld it in the upright position? I assume you are taking advantage of gravity in laying it down but why is that needed? Thanks mate!

there is a certain tranquility to these videos, its just nice seeing broken stuff getting fixed
@thepotterer37263 жыл бұрын
Had no idea that magnetism remaining in the plate would affect its orientation, when it is welded.

I'm assuming he's dealing with arc blow. Having trouble getting good fusion when welding vertical?

I really appreciate the work, effort, and personal touches that you three contribute to this series, very much a fan. I'm grateful that I don't hear that background trap beat in your other videos, that I am here; I'd rather hear Kurtis run the descaler, or homey with his squeak toy, honestly. Thank you three for sharing.

Great job so now when he pinches the machine treads again they will come off and the bucket will be fine

Why does picking up a piece with a magnet make it impossible to weld that spot vertically but not horizontally?
@TheEvertw3 жыл бұрын
The residual magnetic field interacts with the liquid metal? Someone below suggested the magnetic field interacts with the plasma of the arc.
@pierrevalette97213 жыл бұрын
even without the magnet, when you have choice, it's always better to weld horizontally

I'm curious how the orientation of the metal effects how the weld stick or not. If Curtis could clarify that'd be awesome!

The magnetism screws with the arc.

I would have used my grinder to remove the bolts, HaHa! Interesting about the magnet, maybe elaborate (explain) a little more for us dummies.
@fomori23 жыл бұрын
A magnetized piece will cause the molten metal to repel. When its vertical, it is enough to push the added material away from the surface he wants to add to. When it is on the ground, the repeling force isnt strong enough to overcome gravity and it will "fall" where he wants the material to go.
