Oh man, those two bottom screws that hold the shroud to the body are usually where all the noise comes from in these ptac's. That and where the motor attaches to the shroud.

Nice work Curtis, those are a pain in the neck to service in spite of how easily they come out. A buddy used to be Chief Engineer at a nice Holiday Inn I serviced. He told me they proactively replaced their units like that every 5 years, in groups. That was less costly than having to pay a tech to come repair them, including the refunds they’d usually have to give the guests that experience no cooling in a room. You did the right thing when the fan replacement failed to resolve the noise. You probably have a customer for life as a result.

Ah, yes. Amana Ptac. I worked in a hotel for about 4 years and we had these in our rooms. Actually made by Goodman. Condenser fan motor, fairly easy to replace. The blower motor and heating element, not so much.

One tool that I found very valuable to me over the years when trying to isolate a noise is a mechanic's stethoscope. It may have helped determine the source of the noise.

Good man. That’s awesome. I had one today where another company told them they needed a new furnace. When I got there I realized that all they needed was new exhaust pipe. I didn’t charge them for the service call because it was originally a sales call and they said they planned on selling the house. I got the job to replace the flu piping. It’s always best to try to do the right thing.

I hope other tradesmen who watch this realize that it was your honesty that brought this customer back to you even though the initial repair was not successful. Would a M12 ratchet be a worthwhile investment, or do you rarely see such cramped right-angle screws as that unit had?

Who else was thinking remove shroud first!! Curtis 😂
@JamesAgansАй бұрын
Well, my first thought was to turn it on end and walk it onto the hand truck vertically, and take it outside, the second was to unbolt the shroud, the third was to mount those straps with orings sandwiched between fender washers to restrict noise transmission. Lolol

@donaldhoudek2889Ай бұрын
Same like when I was working on my race car engines. The sound could be coming from a few different areas and difficult to isolate the actual point where it was coming from. I used a stethoscope that had a metal probe on the end. Really helped with isolating a lifter that was not gaped properly (solid lifters). Maybe having one could have isolated your issue easier and faster.
@QualityservicesbcsАй бұрын
I work on those quite a bit .
@danman32Ай бұрын
I wonder if those broken clips at the bottom of the shroud is causing a bit of a rattle. Easy check to tell if it is the compressor or condenser fan is to temporarily disconnect the fan.

I use a 45 degree hex driver attachment thing and you can use a long extension with your M12 fuel and it works well for those tight places but that ratcheting wrench works nice as well it just fatigues your hand after a little while. Curtis are prior service? I’ve been meaning to ask.

I would have cleaned the condenser coil and loosened the hold down bolts, first, to see if that would help instead of replacing parts.

I was working on some heat pumps and they had the company sent out some techs to figure out what was wrong with the ptacs and they kept saying they were shot and needed replaced ( they were still under warranty ) and I noticed they didn’t check anything so i started asking them questions and realized they didn’t have a clue how they ran ( either did I yet ) so I got a bad one took it apart to see exactly how it worked out it back together tested some stuff and I do a lot of work on those now . For hotels .

Dude, this is what you call an abortion! Unit making noise was the only complaint. Unit was cooling and working fine otherwise. After service, it was still making noise. And after you monkeyed around, broke the plastic housing (probably a new cause of the sound problem) and replaced the motor and fan, now it stops working? You shouldn't have charged them because you fixed nothing and seemingly broke the unit. Yes, it worked out for you because you get to install a new unit. Just like in medicine, the first rule is do no harm.
