I’m not that old but how many times a guy sees this when not draining gas or starting every couple months. How many of us have seen this on any generator/chainsaw/small engines “LOTS” … why does it run on choke but nothing without choke!?!? Glad you made this video T-Mike always a pleasure to watch! I liked the beginning where you explained air flow and cause of issue, I enjoy the little tips like the name of parts there function and importance of things like float position… it helps guys like myself who don’t know or only heard a couples times key points.. plugged jets are no fun on the water. Thx!!

Hey just what I was looking for. I have a 3hp Evinrude from the mid 60’s. Great old motors that run forever on a quart of gas.

The more I watch your videos and see the specialized equipment you need, the replacements parts needed, and the time involved (for someone like me it would involve even more time and money due to the learning curve) the more sense buying a new motor seems to make even at current prices, say about $2K for a typical 4 stroke 6 hp known brand outboard. How do you evaluate when it makes sense to restore an older motor, versus buying a new one? Finding a mechanic to work on older motors is both hard to do and expensive, my last water pump change cost $200 and carb rebuild &150. This could have been $350 put into a new motor. Now with a problem developing with the choke not staying open, I am wondering if my 1990 Johnson should be retired?

Does starting fluid work better than carburetor cleaner?

Carb kits are so cheap. Under $20. Why don't you put a new carb kit on it after doing all that work?

Because sometimes you just want to get the outboard running properly to prove that it can run properly and that the diagnosis was correct. Now that it runs properly you can rebuild it with a new kit, if you so desire, and have a perfectly running carb for years - with the correct maintenance along the way. Good video T-Mike. You kept it detailed where needed and short where you could. I've never used that product but if it can clean a carb in 45 minutes I think I might try it. Lately for the really filthy carbs I have been doing this: immerse the same parts that you did in the ultra sonic cleaner for 30 minutes in 55C/130F water. I use a mixture of oxy clean powder and water. I then rinse them in water and soak overnight in straight Pine Sol. Rinse with water. Spray with carb cleaner. Finish with compressed air. PITA.
