The eraser end of a pencil also works on joysticks with membrane switches. Must be one with a soft eraser.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! My joystick got caught under a kitchen drawer handle and tightly lodged there. I couldn't move and I was alone very late at night. I ended up calling 911 because of course I couldn't reach to put the chair in neutral and also, as luck would have it, the power center Mount footrest was raised. The EMTs finally figured out how to put the chair in neutral and brought me to the bedroom and transferred me to my bed so all is well. I have the most expensive R-net controller because I have the permobil light package. Until I saw this video, I was looking down the barrel of a very expensive replacement. Ironically I am in the process of getting a new chair but this was to be my second chair precisely to fly with and take to la Republica Dominicana to work among the poor and hopefullychange attitudes about disabilities caregiving and caregivers. My questions: If both the headphones and the magnet will work, is the magnet better because you don't have to go to the underside of the joystick? It seems like that would be very difficult to do if your hands aren't well coordinated and you're sitting in the chair. Will the magnet solution work long-term and does it seem to be more targeted and less likely to change the mode if the magnet is more powerful?

ahh good times! lol nothing like calling emergency services when trapped by a drawer! :^) yea the magnet is probably easier - it wont hurt anything to use long term.. the little rare-earth magnet sticks for the old style wheelchair van door openers are perfect! but a small neodymium magnet is all ya need. just play around with spot ya wave it past and should work reliably for turning on/off OR changing modes

I've busted a few on my permobil's over the years. Most have been from working out when the dumb bell or cable hits it so I used the magnet hack.

For a while there, my Edge 2's power switch was continually breaking off for no reason at all. The first two times they actually replaced the entire controller under warranty. The 3rd time it happened, I guess Pride finally realized they had a problem and the switch (Knob), was replaced never to have another problem. My Edge 3 has never had this issue.

Thanks Dan for sharing this with us, my gimbal on my joystick isn't returning to the centre, but it's an insurance job so no worries. I looked on my other chair and that's Dx2 with the display that you mentioned,and have to remove the rear cover. I do have another chair which is R-Net but can't seem to find any port's on the joystick. Too many wheelchairs, lol 😆 👍

Q-logic has a pot that spins 360 degrees if the plastic or spring breaks. The good thing is that the flat spot set even with the trim is 0 position, so you can just turn it a little and back to 0 to toggle.

The headphone trick is fantastic! I once had to hotwire my airline-broken Invacare mk4 in the Havana airport, using nail clippers and an eyeglass repair kit. It's a weirdly untransferable skillset, isn't it?

One of your best, informative videos! I frequent airports but have not had them damage anything yet. I have been trying to think of a way of encasing the joystick so that the airport cannot damage it. I have been thinking to use something similar to a JGRZF Quality Rat Trap, presently $20.99 on Amazon. I cannot figure out a way to bolt it onto the chair though. I would have to do so when they transfer me from my chair to the airline's chair when I board. I want the joystick to hover in the cage.

I have 1 control box that the toggle switches are bad 1 the speed is broken and the second off/on is cracked, can the toggles be replaced my other control box is flashing bad cable 7f00 any help ? My prob is I live in Costa Rica nobody in the country works on electric chairs

Great hack Dan. A few times my Q-Logic 2 has locked-up and the screen requests a power cycle. However, the on/off power button doesn't work so you can't power cycle and have to unplug at the controller to clear, and then power back up with the power button. Now I have a mono jack and momentary button plugged in and that will work for the power cycle when the on/off button doesn't (thus avoiding having to explain to someone where/how to unplug near the controller). Fortunately, this rarely happens, but it has saved me a couple times in the last 6 months. Have you tried the hack with a mono jack and the wires twisted together (or a stereo or TRRS with wires twisted together)? If that works, it seems like a good idea to tape one under an armrest for emergency use.

Do you have a video on adapting those mini quad wheels to fit a premobil? Saw some for sale in the US but can't ship to the UK so I've ordered some 16x8-7 hubs and tyres and will look at adapting them before winter mud arrives.

honda mini-trail tires fit on most powerchair wheels.. some wheels need a tiny bit of spacing to clear the motors, others dont - most quantum edge chairs for example only need 3-4 washers on each wheel stud kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZKTnJeffMyDl9E

Is there a seat cushion u would recommend I have a new edge 6 and cushion didn't last 3 months it's so flat when u sit on it where butt goes it was nice when new but didn't last and where I bought it from says no warranty on it and want to sell me one for over $1000 which is crazy I'm kinda big guy of 260lbs with no legs so any help would be appreciated

the speakers in the headphones complete the connection.. you can also make your own remote power button using an actual MONO plug, attached to a momentary pushbutton

yup :^) thats a setting! when out with friends sometimes their chairs are slightly slower, so that lets me dial in their speed without constantly modulating the joystick
