I have a Rogers Dynasonic 5 x 14" COB snare drum. It is a great drum but difficult to tune properly..they have a very narrow 'sweet spot'. Mine is approximate 1970 manufacture early Fullerton with script shell badge. The snare rail concept is great but the secret is not to tension the snare wires too tight and adjust the rails so that they just 'kiss' the reso head.

I brought my (new to me) dynasonic to a gig…big mistake. Lots of finicky adjusting of snares and a narrow sweet spot like you said. But once I spend some time with it I know it will be a truly great snare

I have played a 71 Rogers powertone COB 14x5 for 40+ years now, but back in the day I briefly had a dyno. I was young, nobody had ever really explained the 'WTF?' of the snare bridge to me, so I never really got it set up right and had better results with a conventional snare setup.

I like the 6.5. I wonder how it would sound tune medium high? Also, what kind of difference the sound bar at the bottom would make. I recorded on a 6 ply ludwig kit with a 5.5 dynasonic and that kit ripped but usually that extra 1 of depth can drastically change the sound and feel.

Without the snare frame,it wont work,i tried using normal snare wires but they buzz like crazy. Its because there is no snare bed to pull the snares into. Also i had the snare tensioner fall off during a show(its just pressed on ) and it put me off the drum.

I had a 14x6.5 dynasonic that I got for $300 and it was legit dropped on 4 of the lugs. Major denting, but the hardware, hoops, and snare wires were mint. So after $50 in hammers, I popped the dents right out and sold it for $725 shipped. I really didn’t like the sound that much, but I’m a shallow snare fan.

The 6.5 sounds great with that head/tuning/muffling combination. I wish a lot of folks who do these videos would turn off the snares, turn the drum on it's side, muffle one head with their hand and tap the opposite head and tell us what note it is. Next, do the same thing on the other side/head. The smaller drum sounds very good as well. I'm partial to deeper drums.

I'm searching high and low for the snare wires which fit on a 60s Ludwig Supersensitive. Around 69 or so they swapped to one that is pretty easy to find all over, Puresound made both but now I can't find the goofy one for the older model. The snare wires have T-shaped ends on the Puresound one, it's out of stock on the few sites that have it. If anyone has any idea about where some might be, please let me know! I'm trying to grab 2 maybe even 3 at this point lol

Great video! I have late 60’s oval badge dyna and also the early or mid 70’s big R. Is there much of a difference in the build quality of these? When I weight them the oval badge is slightly heavier. Is this most likely explained by hoop differences? Also how much different sound wise are 60’a version of super 10 and cob LM400 Supra? Thanks again!

ok. Don't shoot me. But I have always felt that tuning shorter snares lower and deeper snares higher sounded better. I find the shallower drum gives more of a splat and controls the low end. While tuning a deeper snare higher gives more body to the higher tuning. I have a 14X8 maple snare that sound insane tuned high. There's so much body and low end to the crack. I used to have a 14X5 i loved tuned low because it got a much better low tuning sound.
