Watch how to fix a coolant leak on a 2016 Land Rover Range Rover Sport.
May 2024: After watching this, be sure to watch my update video posted 14 months later: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJalaKKCqdlkbNk
Compatibility: Similar procedure should apply to all L494 Range Rovers (2013 to 2022), and is likely very similar to most modern-day Land Rover models.
Tools Needed: Ratchet with 15mm socket and needle nose pliers.
Robb’s DIY Rating on 1 (easy) to 5 (hardest) Scale: Definitely a 1. Hardest part was just tracking down the leak.

Duuuude! I may not have had the exact same leak as you, but I took the advice and invested in a nifty endoscope. Found the leak in 5 mins of investigation. Just wanted to say thanks :)

Coolant crossover pipe is the common source of coolant leaks on these engines. It's a plastic part that fails at a seam/join - it was updated for 2017 model year. It will destroy the engine if not caught in time. It's a POS to replace as the supercharger needs to come out. I'd check it just to be safe.
@robbsgarage
@robbsgarage Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. This leak appears to be fixed, but good to know about the crossover pipe so I can plan accordingly. I’ve replaced that pipe on other vehicles and no matter what the engine it always seems to be a PITA. Every manufacturer these days insists on using cheap plastic that will crack/melt/degrade from the engine heat. Do you know how Land Rover changed it in 2017-aluminum, or different design?
@dwboston1

Great detailed quick video. Unfortunately I blew the plastic parts under our velar. 2500, they warmed head. I love the brand. Worked at corporate for the early SVR and LR4 designs. All have been great this one a lemon. Or just over heated to far. Temp gauges. Loose your coolant it reads good to wife.. 🤷‍♂️

After extensive repairs, swapping the to aluminum coolant pipes under the super charger. New water pump. Even used block seal to fix head gasket. But Kept loosing coolant. I’m not one to dump it on the next guy. They say only 8 thousand’s of machinable surface. Between block and heads. I saw the stellar reviews at Rover parts depot. And his engine work. Opted for a new engine. Only 38k miles. Don’t let your wife accidentally overheat these new models. You must turn off the car immediately. I’ll keep you updated. Great channel clean work/ videos.

Correct, 20’ TSW wheels mounted on 265/50 Nitto Ridge Grappler tires. They provide a nice aggressive look and maximize the wheel well perfectly, plus they handle great off road and yet aren’t noisy on the street. Highly recommended!

@@firescrap oh, right. I thought you were referring to a tapping sound with this coolant leak. At about 45K miles the engine started to produce a tapping sound. Turns out one of the tappets/lifters wasn’t right. Thankfully it was still under warranty and the stealership replaced not only all lifters on that bank but also the timing chains, tension rails & guides, tensioners, and related gaskets.

What do you do if the temperature gauge is fluctuating a little bit taking a long time to get hot no coolant inside the overflow coolant tank. Also no heat coming out of the car bare minimum and the blower motor seem to push out the heat faster rapidly coolant topped off.

If you don’t mind me asking how do you get the piece off to put the O ring inside?
@robbsgarage
@robbsgarage 4 ай бұрын
I just pulled it straight out. Will need to use a pick tool or flat blade screwdriver to remove the o-ring, then I recommend using some coolant to lubricate when pushing the pipe back in with the new o-ring on. The #6 o-ring held up for 14k miles but I then developed a new leak. Will upload a new video this weekend with a different size o-ring (metric) that’s held up for 6K miles with no issues yet. Will post more updates as the miles progress.

@@longcashdj3381 if it’s a brand new pipe from the dealer then the only thing I can think of is either it’s not pushed far enough into the radiator or the radiator inlet was damaged. Did you put some coolant on the pipe as lubricant to push it all the way in?

with all the tools you used it is not a 79 cents fix, the "o" ring part is just part of the total cost. it is cheaper than the dealership but it is not a 79 cents fix.

The tools used in this video helped track down the leak, but the actual repair requires no tools at all. Now that I’ve done the research, anyone watching this who sees a leak at this location can repair it without any tools. 😊

How you remove? Squeeze clamp??
@robbsgarage
@robbsgarage Жыл бұрын
On my vehicle, I just pulled it off and then pushed it back on by hand after installing the new o-ring. I wouldn’t advise removing it unless you see a confirmed leak, because the existing o-ring will have expanded and, as a result, once you remove the pipe you will likely need to install a new o-ring regardless if the existing one is broke or not.

Oddly enough, I tried and could not locate the leak with my pressure tester. That was the first thing I did, then when I couldn’t find the leak I decided to record the rest of my steps in case I could post and see if anyone else had ideas. After I found the leak is when I decided to make this video to show everyone else the random culprit. Have you ever used a pressure tester and not found the source of the leak? First time for me. Maybe it was because I hadn’t removed the covers yet…
