THANK YOU. My machine is an oldie (15 years) but you helped me renew it. Why toss it into a landfill when you can spend a few bucks and get the shocks replaced? Two of my four (I replaced all of them) were letting oil/grease by and I think that was my problem. It is steady now!

I would suggest putting four back in. Even IF the other three are still good… they don’t last forever.

Is the shock absorber supposed to have an inch of free play? This is with it removed and pushing/pulling on the shock. My machine is starting to shake and I took out the shocks to check and all four have a small amount of free play. There seems to be good tension after that 1” travel. Bought new ones off Amazon and they have the same free play. Now I’m not so sure if my shocks need replacement. No videos out there to help diagnose if shocks are good or bad, just how to replace.

It vibrates really bad, much more than it did when new. It can be so bad that it moves itself/ walks out of the laundry area.

Never reaching full spin speed because machine thinks load is of balance and keeps trying to self adjust the load.

Root cause for beefing failure is water getting past the seal on the spindle. If water pH is off, it will go after the chrome plating then the steal (game over when rust forms). The rust works into the seal and water follows. Bottom line... replace the shaft at the base of the drum when replacing the bearings if there’s any sign of rust.

My shocks are different. They connect to the tub the same way. But the connection to the frame is with a very beefy little bolt. That that secures the shock to a metal bracket. It's going to be nearly impossible to get a ratchet in that tight space to loosen it.

I had to buy a set of stubby wrenches to do this. The bolt is 5/8" and the nut is 11/16". A very awkward and difficult fix. The new shocks look very different to the older ones. But they fit just fine. I replaced all three as I don't know which one had gone bad. They actually seemed fine to me after I removed them. Just a bit of grease leaking. But maybe that's enough to make them stop working well.

Sooo...I successfully did this repair, but I dropped the front panel and broke the clips for the electrical connectors to the door sensor. Right now they're taped in with electrical tape and it works fine, but is it possible to replace the connectors?

I suppose you could color me stupid, but: I DID watch the entire video. I DID go to Whirlpool to look for the exploded-view diagram. What I did NOT find here, or there, was the fact that this machine required FOUR shock absorbers ... when this video only showed ONE. I ordered up ONE part ( from Amazon ... at 1/5th the cost of the OEM Whirlpool part !! ) and wasn't until I disassembled the washer that I found out my mistake. COULD YOU PLEASE ADD A VOICE NOTE TO THE DIALOG THAT YOU'LL NEED FOUR?)

Your drum is most likely broken

Knocking could be the drain hose inside the cabinet is loose. Machine gun sound. Videos exist with the fix for the price of a good zip tie.
