Lithium battery swelling is not only caused by over charging. In fact, if the phone was operating normally for 3 years, the swelling is most likely due to one of the other more common causes: age of the battery that affects the chemistry (impurities). Heat exposure, over discharge.

Well, it was never exposed to heat, and never over-discharged -- I don't think it's ever been under 70% charge. So I'd guess it's probably just age due to some chemical reaction/breakdown. Nonetheless, swelling is a dangerous condition as far as I can tell! I'm just glad it was easy to replace.

I thought the charging circuit stopped once the battery is at 100%.

both our motorola moto G7 batteries in both our phones swelled, days apart once phones hit 2 yrs old. i expect phones to last 2 years with their cost! We are going to get new batteries and replace the defective designed ones that would do this. Thanks for the video to let us know we can do it.

I'm having the same issue; phone 3 years old and the battery is swelling, causing the front screen to pull away. I believe the real issue is likely keeping the phone at 100 percent charge at almost all times. (We typically keep it plugged in whenever we are home.) When this is done with a Li-Ion battery, it eventually causes Lithium dendrites, which are formed when extra lithium ions accumulate on the anode surface and cannot be absorbed into the anode in time. Some phones can be set up to limit the charge to 85 percent or so, which pretty well eliminates the issue. But that, of course, reduces battery capacity.

I used the battery kit in your description. Turned out to be a garbage battery. Crapped out 7 months later. Just ordered an alleged OEM battery from IFIXIT and about 2X as much. Instead of gluing the case back together I put it back in the shock case I got for it (POETIC brand) when it was new. Probably not very waterproof, but since I am redoing the job it is a little easier to redo. Also, Walmart has a great tool kit for this stuff Hyper Tough 77 Piece Precision Tool Kit with Magnetic Screwdriver, around $10 on sale.

Wow, so sorry that didn't work out for you. I'm still using the SAME replacement battery I showed in the video and it works just fine (1.5 years later). I guess maybe you got a dud?

Okay, just replaced the battery. The cheap one was swollen already. Am going through the battery calibration process now and already the real McCoy Motorola lasts way longer. Waiting for it to run all the way down for a full recharge.@@JoyeMusiccom

I watched a few other videos and they removed some other pieces. I am glad you proved nothing else has to be removed to swap batteries. Is that $20- dollar battery still working? How can you tell if one battery is better than another? Same problem here. Battery expanding.

The seller said the tape strips are for the battery and no strips to seal the top screen. I plan to do both if I buy this battery. I just want to make sure it's not one of those scam batteries (used with a new cover on it).

I bought the battery in the link (JG30) I had to return the first one. The charge didn't last to long. It would drop form 100% to the 80% range in about 5 minutes. Returned it got another one and the same thing happened. It finally got to the point where it had problems charging. Would never go beyond 90% area and it also last only about 5 minutes after charge. Would like to find a good reliable battery.

Thank you for the video! Do you recall the width of the adhesive areas? Will 2mm wide 3M 9448HK Double Sided Tape for LCD fit? Is there an actual difference between JG30 and JG40?

2mm should be okay. I fell like it was closer to 1mm, though. JG30 and JG40 are different batteries.

I just had my first motor power 7 battery swollen recently (5/2024). I had it since 7/2020. I estimated it has been 3.5 years approximately.

came across this since my moto g7 power is also swollen a bit more than yours, BUT the link is to a different model battery than mine so i had to look for a jk50 battery, which i have on the way. since i use the phone as a wired webcam essentially on a tri-pod since even the cheap-o phones tend to be better camera's than expensive webcams, but i also kept it plugged in the whole time and noticed it a few weeks ago and just now got around to looking into a replacement. also, i'm SUPER paranoid of batteries... car and jumper pack sized batteries are the main one's.. seen some crap happen with those in person and explode so i get VERY paranoid when i see sparks, like when you first cut into the battery my GF and i both jumped and my instinct was to rip it out your hands and huck it across the pavement lol.

I have read that you need to "recalibrate" a new battery in Moto phones after it is installed. But, I don't know how true that actually is. Supposedly it will make it work better. 🤷‍♀️

I have had the same problem but the back of my phone started coming apart I've replaced the phone because I was not aware the battery could be replaced

FYI lithium Batteries are ment to be able to charge and sit on the charger. Because the chips in the Batteries are supposed prevent the battery from charging when full. What lithiums can't handle, is going to far dead. You always want your batter 30%+ What happened with the MotoG7. Is they put batteries that had crappy Charger Circuit. And bad Charger Circuits will keep charging the Battery when it shouldn't, and poorly regulate power, which leads to lower life spans.

Sounds like you'll need to get a new screen. Amazon sells those, like this one: amzn.to/3AWrXS7 -- make sure it's the right one for your model phone. Check the bottom back of your phone for the exact model number.

I guess I can understand the curiosity of what is inside the battery pack, but it would be best to NOT show or encourage in any way such tampering, as shown at the end of this video. It is dangerous. The old battery must be disposed of at a household e-waste collection point or battery-recycling drop off location. And the electrical hazard needs to be carefully considered. I placed my used battery in a sealed container outside, awaiting that trip to an e-waste collection site.

@@JoyeMusiccom Thanks. It looks like there are a fair number of these swollen batteries in 3-year old Moto G7s. I wonder if there have been any fires. Hopefully the swelling occurs well before the battery deteriorates to the degree that it becomes a fire hazard, but who knows...
