We built a fire over the hole to be dug using a fire ring b4 we started morning chores! By the time we were ready to start digging we would move the fire over but keep it going so if we got a foot down and hit frost again then we place the fire in the hole by shoveling hot could from the fire ring into the hole and adding fatty pine and cedar ( both burn really hot ) then take a break to warm up over the fire and resume digging once the first hole was completely dug the second was completely thawed from the fire ring being on it longer! That was in northern Washington state near the Canadian border!

CARPENTER ADVANTAGE CALCULATION!!!! I am a long time fan of your channel and the great work you do! I am a woodworker and Mechanical Engineer and after watching your last video when Jamie used the chain tension to move the framing I did a quick calculation. I emailed you my calculations and solved for the lateral force you could apply with a certain weight and a certain angle of the chain. The closer to horizontal the chain is the more force you can produce! With a weight of 180 lbs and an angle of 10 degrees you can produce 511 lbs! Formula is F=Weight/(2*Tan(angle)) when the angle is measured from horizontal.

Hello guys ,from Australia. Have been watching your shows as of very recently.I have watched many shows since the time KZbin started and your relaxed , easy styled banter, explanations and cross talk with each other is what makes the show.Stay away from the commercial contracted shows as those so called gurus will strip away the true character of your show.Your building codes, practices are different to Australia but it is good to see tradesman doing the right thing compared to all the ' do it yourselfers' that think they have a free for all to build whatever they want. The commeraderie and laughter is your trademark.Do not lose that.Thank you for some great moments and laughter.

I had a frozen ground problem, as I had to put up a fence to stop our dogs going into the river. We used a machinery pinch bar which helped and a petrol post auger which finished the hole well. If anyone has seen the original St Pancras piano farce with the Chinese people post, I honestly thought that was Arlo speaking with the piano player. The roof is looking so much better with the Zip system boards down. Keep safe and well guys. 🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨

Hey a Pro Tip i learned a long time ago was to trace that roof line, then lay the level on the roof and trace the other side of the levels thickness. It back spaces the cut line back to allow for sheathing to plane up. A quick and dirty trick to use...if anyone wants.

Love remodeling projects like this. It looks hopeless at times, but it is such a stimulating exercise and amazing skill training to identify and solve problems on projects and buildings that aren't completely standard or modern We did much the same thing on our cabin last year. The walls and windows, especially those facing the ocean and its Atlantic weather, were completely shot and full of rot. The sane thing would have been to burn the entire thing down and build a new one, but with all the memories and affection attached to such a place, we decided to repair and remodel instead. We (my dad & I) have now completely repaired the two bad walls with new framing, insulation, siding and windows, and I absolutely cannot wait for summer when we're doing the other two Love this series so far!

I never use rise and run. I just put my Bosch digital angle spirit on the rafter/roof, it'll say 26.5°, and then cut the wood in the mitre saw. Then where needed, that little bit cut off is ideal to mark the birds mouth.
