I got inspired to tinker when watching this. My old 270x has been collecting dust for a year after it started to display heavy artifacting in 3D mode at clocks over 400mhz. I just "reflowed" it with a hot air gun using a cut beer can as a heat shield. ( ghetto style ) Heated the core until the rubber and plastic fittings in the card started to burn :D I was like it's a dead gpu anyway and it worked. Just to test it out quickly I got 39.1% in userbenchmark without any artifacting. Now I got myself a decent backup card. Thanks for the inspiration.

Nguyen Anh 3-4min at ~300 air temp. An Iron may not transfer enough heat inside the chip or you arent as lucky as I was. Chances of "fixing" your chips with heat is abit 50-50. Good luck tho.

Ok iv'e watched a lot of repair video's lately mainly just trying to figure out shorts 12v 3v 5v rails and where to look and tracking it down. That's the first reball on a gpu die i have seen done. man the more i watch you the more i see that you're crazy smart. I have a msi r9 390x 8gb powers on, fans spin, logo lights up, no post no video i would like fixed where do i send it. Lol no joke have like 5 parts gpu's as well if you could use them. i messaged you on insta as well.

Eli - I've got a MSI RX 570 that shorted out. It see a cracked and burnt component that looks like in surface-mount inrush current limiter near the 8 pin connector. First the card powered on for a few seconds and then started burning near the 8-pin connector. Now it shorts out. It's a perfectly good PSU and Mobo, the card is definitely the issue. Sorry, random question...but it was a fantastic card that seems to have died an early death.

Never mind, I figured it out. Bad Mosfets, blown fuses and resistors. I think I'm going to part it out as the damage is extensive and getting parts would probably cost more in time than the card's worth

Are you sure that the re-balling did the trick or if you just did the so called "oven method" and it works for another 2 weeks and blows out again? I have fixed a lot of motherboards though not that many video cards and when it comes down to the chip (CPU or GPU) I first heat it to 150*C for 3-5 minutes and see if it fixes the issue. If it does then it means that the chip is pretty much dead. Usually at this point I would look for another chip as heating the dead chip without removing can fix it temporarily which is not what we want. Still everything else you do is quality job and I have learned to fix quite a few GPUs, still I'm not confident on re-balling the chip as it might still die shortly after.

I have a card that I broke by taking it out with the 6 pin plug still attached. Nothing showing, just stopped working. Tried to reheat and got stripes in the screen. I would have liked to see what and where you were checking to fined out the voltages but you just said you checked them and here the voltage is correct...... Bad start but nice progressing. Actually fast/objective video first time I actually understand what reballing means, never even knew of those little spheres, now I got it, excelent video. One thing: If one is to heat up the chip with a heat gun but then just let it cool down, can it be considered as usefull for fixing two artifacts lines on r9 270x saphire? It heated up to 98 on boot and gain artifacts, still booting up but artifacts remain eventually indows always crashin. If i do that should I first set a poerfull plastic clamp revolved in aluminium papaer and perhaps aplly the heat gun with the core turned down towards the floor? Im worried if on the other ay the soldering may not touch others. Ho should I proceed my new rx560 arrives friday, thinking about cross for vulkan on the future or selling the r9 if survive 3 days of testing...

I have a RX580 8GB that runs furmarks and heaven benchmarks fine (1080p), but crashes when launching DX12 games (GPU and D3D Device Removed Crash) and gives crashes time spy dx12 benchmark. (brief black screen but contines to run benchmark) , worked fine before, have tried old and latest drivers, DDU and new install of windows. Think it may need reflow or reball. just seem strange it only crashes dx12.

In these days, companies have to use only Lead-Free solder and this cause degradation of solder due heat. So not overheat but in flow of time, solder without lead just gets higher resistance and loss contact.

Try clean with alcohol and water after heat GPU chip with hair dryer for 15 min ,put new thermal paste on it. Give it a try ;)

I have the same card, working as long as the drivers aren't installed but once they're, black screen things I've noticed : *When the pc is stuck on black screen, everything is irresponsive including the Reset button! (take some time 12-15 sec for the pc to _not reboot _ but to shutdown and then reboot) *Vcore module (especially the coils) and the memory chips get really really hot when I touch them seconds after the pc crashes. any ideas my friend ?

Amged Moustafa it might be dead, but I would try taking it apart and applying new thermal paste after removing the old thermal paste. The fans are spinning up fast because they’re rushing to cool it, but they won’t succeed if the thermal paste is bad or the heat sink hasn’t been seated properly.

скорее у тебя проблема с чипом. Прост посмотри чтоб на каждом дросселе было напряжение, если не уверен где какие главное посмотри на чипе и на памяти чтоб было 1 и 1.5В. И если есть смело можно менять чип, либо прогреть феном ну все остальное ты знаешь
