1:21 You can use a large piece of tape, put it on the back and then try using the suction cup again. 4:21 That heatpipe is probably broken now. You should never bend a heatpipe. It has a tiny amount of liquid inside travelling from the hot spots to cooler ones. So if you bend it, the liquid won't be able to travel anymore, resulting in much worse temperatures than before.

Yeah, yet another lazy rushed repair from Hugh Jeffreys. Destroyed a heatpipe, destroyed his replacement display and tried to blame it on the quality of the glass, doesn't know how to use liquid adhesive (didn't even let it cure), even called batteries "hot swappable". This guy knows nothing about tech. Did you catch that Mac Pro upgrade he did some time ago where he just wedged a graphics card into the computer and completely choked its airflow? LOL! I wouldn't trust this Ariana Grande fanboy with any of my tech.

@@ps5hasnogames55 i would absolutely love to see you do a repair as clean as he does. Wonder how many parts you'll destroy before you get even one phone to work again after. There is no way to remove heat pipes from phones without damaging them, that's why new frames will usually include then. He didn't let the first application of glue fully cure because he shouldn't have needed to use any at all, the replacement display came with shit adhesive. He didn't blame the glass quality for it breaking, he just said that 3rd party parts aren't usually as good as oem, then very plainly stated he shouldn't have put so much weight on it.

Hey! Just thought I would point out, I have a LG V50 Sprint version from the US. This phone has all the antennas and capability to run with 4G, just not 5G. Check the G8 modem coverage and compare with Australia, you may find some-one could use it in Australia with 4G only as long as they accept that condition?? Good luck! and thanks for the video content!

While it may work in Australia, the phone itself is locked to Sprint and Hugh had difficulties even trying to contact Sprint to get the phone unlocked/released. That's why said he'd be willing to send it back to the US if someone could use it (ie: someone that already uses the Sprint network).

Restoration was ok, but it makes me cringe when people use "glue" to mount displays. It's not only unprofessional (aka lazy), but makes it a lot more difficult to replace it should again down the line. @dusanmilicevic4652
@dusanmilicevic4652 2 жыл бұрын
Well, i can understand why he used the glue. The bezel is really narrow on this model. Hence the using of duble sided adhesive would result in minor parts of adhesive sticking out of the side of the bezels.
@BillAnt
@BillAnt 2 жыл бұрын
@@dusanmilicevic4652 - If you use 1mm width tape placed properly at the edge of the screen (not on the frame), it won't stick out. Plus you can run a wider 10mm strip in the middle of the screen to secure it even more. They sell a variety of widths specially made for phones. I use it all the time and makes subsequent screen repairs so much easier than that gunky glue.

Sprint doesn’t have very stringent unlock requirements - usually, they’re unlocked automatically upon being eligible. There’s also an unlock option in the settings, though I don’t think it’ll work unless you’re connected to their network in the US. Unfortunately, one of the major requirements they have is that if you’re on a payment plan or lease and haven’t made all your payments, the phone (understandably) cannot be unlocked. At that point, it is still property of Sprint. Be cautious of selling a phone if the owner has stopped making payments - in the US, these will be blacklisted across all major networks as stolen and can’t be activated. You can make sure this isn’t the case using Swappa’s IMEI check.

You should try reflashing it. If the software matches the hardware, you could flash another carrier lock onto it or remove it completely. This worked on Samsung phones in the past. LG normally isn't quite that secure with flashing firmware, so you should be fine.
@datachu
@datachu 2 жыл бұрын
There shouldn't be any need with Sprint/T-Mobile. Unlike Verizon, all their phones are unlocked automatically after the contract ends. I had a problem once when I was selling an old phone and it was still locked somehow despite not being on contract, like it didn't get the memo or something. I called them and got it resolved in minutes. Literally all they needed was the IEMI number and they unlocked it like that.

You cannot network unlock a LG G8/V50/V40/V35 by flashing another carrier firmware via LGUP.
@drcyb3r
@drcyb3r 2 жыл бұрын
@@XsaviXander Maybe not with the official tools, but you should be able to flash some firmware over ADB. Android is really open and by itself not very secure (even Samsung or Google Locks can often be removed). As a carrier lock is only on your phone, you can remove it. For Samsung phones there are different versions of a new firmware. One for every carrier.
@XsaviXander
@XsaviXander 2 жыл бұрын
@@drcyb3r Network unlocking is next to impossible just by flashing different carrier firmware or an OPEN firmware. Network locks are stored in the SPU. You can't write to the SPU unless you got special tools (which are NOT easy to find by the way. If you do find it, it's expensive). To write firmware via ADB, you need to be rooted, or have fastboot access that'll allow you to touch boot critical partitions (On most LG bootloaders, you can't touch boot critical partitions unless you have the engineering bootloader). If you're talking about crossflashing, yeah that's easy to do. There are guides to unlock the bootloader for the G8/V50/V40. But you don't need to be bootloader unlocked to crossflash.

6:26 It doesn't look like it was supposed to be adhered there in the first place. I think the implication was the repairer would add their own adhesive, so this isn't the manufacturer's fault. 7:20 Laying the phone display-down likely would have prevented the new display from cracking. While the box of phones probably was too much weight, having the display sit against the flat table would even out the pressure whereas in the video the flexible molded plastic container probably applied uneven pressure to the display, which could have been withstood by the sturdy frame. 10:44 I may be wrong here but it seems like bands would apply more pressure parallel to the display rather than perpendicular. The adhesion probably isn't as good this way, although I guess it gets the job done. Using a heavy object to apply perpendicular pressure should be fine as long as it's done carefully.

Well u can swap the logic board too, to get it 100% done. As for the liquid adhesive (mainly T7000, T8000 and B9000), it is actually really good if u apply it fresh asap and let it dry for 18 hours. One of the basic rules about gluing down an lcd or amoled display is to only apply it around the perimeter, and NEVER in the middle. The display should always have some travel in the middle, otherwise it would just get crushed if u apply some pressure. Samsung oled panels are an exeption (actually glued in the middle), but that is because they use soft copper shield on the inside, which again gives some travel for the display panel. That shield is nowhere to be seen on the A and AA replacement screens.

So interesting, I've been tinkering with phone repair, inspired by you, and had noticed that Samsung clearly based its tech off apple, with a lot of similarities. But the Sony phones were always significantly differnt, with differnt architecture and approaches. What I noticed with this is how similar the LG seemed to be to Sony. I'd theorise LG used Sony as a starting point when it got into phones, and Samsung used apple. Or at least the companies share tech a lot.

I replaced the screen on brothers g8x a while back and had trouble with screen adhering to frame. The lip it rests on is incredibly thin

Wonder if the extended screen has the same parts as the main phone ie same screen as they might be easier to aquire.

I have this phone and no it doesn't. The second screen is the exact same size and even has the camera notch however it is not curved at the edges like the main one and the ribbon cable is also different

The only reason this wonderful phone & the company itself got buried was their crappy software. They could’ve maintained a stock Android throughout their line-up and sustained the competition but LG never implemented feedbacks from customers. I feel sad that this company has left the smartphone world.

Hugh, you should invest in phone blocks or grips that would apply equal pressure to the screen when adhering them to the frame. Since you work with a lot of them it is better to have these instead of a box of phones (which the bottom may not be equal in distribution). Cheers!

A swappable battery was a must have for any phones I bought in the past, so I agree that it is a real shame that no modern phones with actually good components have this incredibly useful feature anymore.

Erf that heatpipe swap hurt me... Have you tried sliding floss under the battery/heatpipe? Flattening a heatpipe like that crushes it and ruins it.

I had the same problem with the display popping issue in my Redmi 7. The interesting thing is that the display was the factory one. A day later, it separated from the frame tearing the connector, basically making it useless :/

Use T8000 and double sided adhesive like the one they use on macs. Apply clamps, or series of clothespins with rubber ends , to hold the phone down. Not a box of phones..

Run your finger over it if you can feel a deep groove it's probably a deep scratch if it's a crack it will be easily be visible when you turn the phone on

3:59 Sorry to nitpick, Hugh, but no phone has had hot swappable batteries, to my knowledge. I think you mean user replaceable batteries, since the phone will power off if you take the battery out of an older phone.

LG phones has always been the easiest to repair after the LG G2. You can actually get the Screen and mid-frame component including the vibration motor assembly for a little more than just the screen or screen+bare frame, instead of you trying to attach the screen into a bare mid-frame. Just a note for you.

Currently trying to restore my old OnePlus One to full glory, managed to get LineageOS 18.1 based off Android 11 on it and also ordered most of the parts from AliExpress. Though I'm having a hard time finding any new back covers/cases for it. Any idea where I could get a new one?
