I'm glad you realized that the lock wasn't keyed to the shaft. I noticed there wasn't a tang in the center of that lock but I didn't know if the shaft had a keyway. Those locks can be used against a part that is keyed or splined to a shaft so one tab is bent toward a notch in the part and another into the nut. Sometimes those cone shaped locks get caught in the nut or the socket as it is tightened down and it breaks that inner tang. You could use Loctite on it too. There wasn't such a thing when that lathe was built.
@Gottenhimfella5 жыл бұрын
I would certainly be inclined to use Loctite on that "set screw" (in other jurisdictions they're called grub screws) on the shift fork which had loosened off.

We had Monarch lathe just like yours at the school bus garage I supervised. Painted it the same color too. Bought it from state surplus. Ours didn't have the power compound feed though. You have a real gem. A very accurate lathe. The only thing I considered a draw back was that it would have been nice if Moharch had made the machine with a 2 inch spindle bore. 1 3/8 inch is sometimes too small for longer shaft work. Don't get me wrong, I loved the lathe. Also, just a note, the nut and washer combination you were working with are made so that no matter where the nut stops when tight, one of the tangs on the washer will line up with a groove in the nut for locking. Great videos.

When you were first tightening THE nut I saw the keeper washer turn. Did the fingers of your clever socket snag the washer and sheer the keyed piece off the inside of the washer? If so you may have sheered it off again this time. You could probably check this by removing the small back inspection port.

I can see why those Monarchs are so liked, one tough looking lathe. Never seen one here in Aus. The nut you made looks to have too much bevel so the tag washer will only slightly engage. Nice restoration too, I'm the same colour as the lathe :)
@AlwaysSunnyintheShop5 жыл бұрын
I misspoke in the video- I made the tool to remove the nut, not the nut itself. It was made by SKF so it has been engineered correctly. The tang was broken on the washer when I reassembled things months ago, so it never had a chance of working. Should be good for a long while going forward.
@dcobel605 жыл бұрын
Aaron, as I am also rebuilding my 60 series, which is similar to yours, I came across an entry in the Monarch Service Manual that recommends 9 inch lbs torque on that end nut once you set the adjustment for the clutch, then bending 2 tabs into the nut locking way, in this manner the washer flat is unable to move and transfer torque to the washer allowing it to shear off the key way stop tab, in other words, the reason the tab sheared off was the nut was not tight enough. (Guess how I found this out, (( twice)) In all the videos out in U-Tube land, I have yet to see any videos or repair videos of Monarch lathe head-stocks, ( I suppose its because they do not break down ) other than yours, Keith Rucker, and Adam Booth but only for minor issues such as your broken washer,...I do have an issue that you may be able to answer,....does your main clutch bearing leak behind the clutch plate once grease has been pumped into the zert's fitting ? I sympathize about the oil getting everywhere, so many rags get used. I stopped using the blue ones as I saw them leave behind so many fibers- they seem to disintegrate. I have gone to just using old tshirts and throwing them in the wash periodically. Also, I work where there are leveling machines for sheet steel. Whenever we rebuild the heads we're left with a bucket bearings like this one you dealt with, washers too, all new parts go back in just to be sure. @melgross5 жыл бұрын
The concept of those washer/nut combinations is that normally, the nut will vibrate off, by itself. The washer supposedly digs int,, and prevents that, but not as much as hoped for. By locking tabs into the nut, it integrates the washer and nut, making it much more difficult for either to loosen. Hopefully, there is a groove for an internal washer tab to be bend into, but not always. And yes,, the tapered sides need to be together. A,so, while I had that top off, I would have installed a lift ring. My foldable lift is invaluable.

@P888JAC5 жыл бұрын
Trying to help here from Scotland ! Looking so far away but if the tab of the lock washer is sheared it means there is a rotary load on it. After you put everything together I saw movement on the clutch at the left of the video the engagement cone should ride up the taper and rest at the biggest diameter, from the picture it stops on taper if this is so then there is constant pressure on the shaft pulling on the clutch and loading the nut and as the only thing stopping the nut from turning is the washer all rotating load is on the tab of said washer which is very thin for such a large load and will shear. Check that the clutch rollers are resting on the large diameter of the engagement cone, this means there is no load on shaft. Or you will have the same thing happening again. Hope I’ve explained things easily
@AlwaysSunnyintheShop5 жыл бұрын
