Repairing Remote Control For Genie Garage Door Opener

My wife's remote control for her garage door opener stopped working. So I needed to fix it. I replaced the battery. It still didn't work. I thought it might be a dirty contact, so I opened the remote control. It had an enclosed switch. I played with it, and found that if I pressed the battery contacts in, it worked. So I cleaned the battery contacts and bent them in a bit. I reassembled the remote control and tested it. It worked perfectly. My wife was happy as it was her remote control.

Thanks so much! Worked almost like a charm. One of my battery contacts had quite a bit of corrosion so I ended up cleaning the contacts with white vinegar, bent them together a bit and with a new battery - VOILA! My garage remote works again! THANK YOU!

Thanks for taking time to post this video! My problem was the rubber buttons were not making good contact, and just taking it apart and re-seating the rubber button sheet did the trick. Your video was very helpful in how to disassemble the remote.

Thanks RJ, this video instruction worked like a charm. I had a Genie GITR-3 Intellicode control and I noticed the red light was weak so I replaced the battery. When I replaced it and the remote still wouldn't light up I thought I had to buy a new one ($22). Then, I found your video &, of course, it works just fine, now!

Just fixed mine, that has been out of order for years. Scrapping the contacts with a file, and then cleaning with alcohol did the trick! Thank you for the tip!

Found an old one laying around. Put new battery in it and tired to program, no avail. Took apart and followed your instructions. Found cob webs blocking the button. Cleaned and put back together. Works great! Thanks for your help.

Just purchased home with a Genie and 3 remotes. Only tried the key chain version and was told other 2 needed batteries. Replaced batteries but only 1 worked sometimes. Next thing the key chain version disappeared. Was looking on line and seeing not much for less than $25-$30. Saw this Tutorial gave it a try on the one that never worked. Now it doe. Just watched your video (12/03/2016). I have no skills whatsoever and little confidence I could do this. I followed your instructions exactly. I spilled coffee on my genie remote earlier backing out of the garage. Coming home 8 hours later - the garage door refused to open. I had to manually come into the house, hit the button to open the garage door, then pull my car in. I found your video on youtube and did exactly as you stated but with some variations since coffee was the culprit and not the battery. I therefore opened the remote, used alcohol to clean the entire enclosed switch/board. I watched you put it all back together again - and I copied you performing that act exactly. I was quite prepared to drive to Lowe's and get a universal remote. I had no hope for my skills. I went to the garage and tried it - and IT WORKED!!! Yeah, I know I'm screaming in everyones ears but - (whispering now) it worked. Thanks so much for saving me money but mostly for giving such clear, concise instructions.

I thought I had remote issue too and found that if you push the remote button and the light(LED) on the opener next to the learn button will flash if the remote is sending a signal. I actually had a broken wire on one of the safety beam sensors. I probably should have realized this when the door would only close when I pushed (and held) the button in the garage. Oh well, cleaning the remote didn't hurt my cause. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much RJ! Didn't occur to me to clean the connectors. I hope that it works on both my remotes, one of my remotes uses a flat circular battery and has ceased to work as well. I started with rubbing alcohol as you did, but the corrosion would not come off so I tried white vinegar as someone had suggested here et voila! Great video thanks on how to take it apart. Btw, may i suggest that the 1st step would be to open the battery cover and squeeze the contacts onto the battery and try the remote first before taking it all apart. If it works, then you don't have to take it apart to find out it's only a bad connection.

I watched the video yesterday (10/13/2018) as one of my Genie remote was not working properly. Your video was very helpful. Thank you very much. As a suggestion one may need to scrape the oxidation buildup with a knife where the battery makes contact. This was the case for my 20 year old unit.

I only need to know how to open the remote and found it that there is a plillip screw behind the clip that was very hard to remove since it has two more metal protrudes at the end of clip. Pushing it out got it out but scratched (injured) the plastic slot in it. THANK YOU.

Great tip. Also, the other thing that goes wrong with these remotes is the rubber button which presses on the button on the circuit board gets warn underneath. Thats always a bummer because you can't buy just a rubber button. There are ways to hack up a repair to it though

You can use an exacto knife to carve off a tiny circle-like piece of pencil eraser, and then attach it to the blue button on the circuit board. This will raise it enough so that the remote button gets good contact

Can't believe Genie made the contacts that way. They "moved" further away as time goes by. I just "moved/pressed" the contacts closer together without opening the remote control.

I think it might control the frequency the remote sends the signal on. It shouldn't be changed. Just a guess. I doubt it can easily be set back without proper equipment. Maybe buy a new remote.

The back of my button was actually damaged/melted. I ended up just wadding up a ball of scotch tape and sticking it in there and then I was able to make the inner button press when I pressed the outside button. I went ahead and did all the cleaning too as the contacts were filthy and there was some grease in there too.
