Greetings and thanks for the video, Can you please clarify. You said putting the plywood piece flush up against the Z-Flashing will cause a gap (and cause water-leaking again)? But if it's touching/up against something with no space how is it gonna leak vs. leaving a gap between the Z-flash and the plywood, and also those gaps on the sides??? At first, I thought it was because you were gonna place caulking or some type weather-stripping in between these spaces but you didn't so....so what about the rain, cold air, varmints, etc. seeping/getting in between those spaces??🤔

I'm not sure where the gap between wood and z channel was placed because the camera was far back. I'm also wondering about this
@kendalgee5808 Жыл бұрын
@@samueladams584 I think he got things mixed up. Your supposed to put a small piece of horizontal wood behind the vertical siding. But tar paper is supposed to be under the vertical siding. That way when water gets behind the vertical siding, the space will let it dry.

Zach, excellent video, thank you so much. Hoping you can clarify how to "gap" the z-channel. My understanding is that the gap needs to be between the top of the horizonal (5/8") section of the z-channel, and the bottom of the siding above the repaired area (so that if water gathers along the top of the z-channel, it will not wick upwards into the bottom of the siding. I may have heard you incorrectly, but I thought you say in the video that the gap goes between the top of the replacement panel and the bottom of the horizontal (5/8") section of the z-channel. Can you explain?

You are correct. He installed the Z channel incorrectly. The way he did it will allow moisture to collect at the top of the new siding and allow moisture and air flow into the building. The purpose of the gap is to stop water pooling between the old siding and the Z channel, so you should see 1/4" of vertical flashing under the old siding when it's done right.

@@zackstewart4109 much appreciated, as I thought.

when dealing with exterior application please use pressure treated. when you replaceed a section of the rim joist and the 2x4 you put under, just didnt look treated but i could be wrong

My sheds siding has contact with concrete. Inspector suggested I install a flashing to prevent moisture contact with the siding at grave level. Could I install this z channel all around the bottom edges of my shed to prevent rot?
@marksatterfield6 ай бұрын
I'm wondering the same. Can z channel be on the bottom edge to reduce the splash up from the ground hitting the wood?

I appreciate The environmentally responsible aspect of this- Don’t replace, repair; use paint leftover from another project instead of throwing away the old paint and buying new.

So was the space in the Z channel under the lip ? I couldn't quite see where you were making the space between the wood and the Z channel
@zackstewart4109 Жыл бұрын
He put the space under the lip which is wrong. The space goes above the lip, between the old siding and the horizontal surface of the Z bar.

Should have sealed the ends of those wood cuts. Looks like you got subterranean termites. Copper green wood preservative is good but posion to humans, only use where no one is.
@kdsinput Жыл бұрын
Why not replace the entire panel? That entire side may need to be replaced
@dontblameme6328 Жыл бұрын
The real problem is that flashing at the bottom of the siding. It's holding moisture.
@francoamerican46322 ай бұрын
He installed the z-channel incorrectly and apparently he doesn't respond to comments and can't be bothered with adding a corrective subtitle to the video to prevent others from making the same mistake.

U want to cover wood with sealer and give a gap so it can dry. Not paint.
@coreyr43233 жыл бұрын
You should of used treated wood

@susanhershey71073 жыл бұрын
I'm confused. Is the space supposed to be between the z flashing and the siding above or the siding below?
@t.r.merkel83052 жыл бұрын
Below
@francoamerican46322 ай бұрын
In other videos I've seen they have a space between the z-channel and the upper piece of siding.
@susanhershey71072 ай бұрын
@@francoamerican4632 that makes sense. any water laying on the z channel would get sucked up by the upper piece, not the lower. thank you!

@kendalgee5808 Жыл бұрын
@@valerielock2374 Use a horizontal piece of Trex. It won't dry rot when water hits it. But make sure you have waterproof paper behind the vertical siding. There's 100 opinions in the comments section, lol.
