The cornea is our window onto the world, letting light into our eyes, and it must be kept in perfect condition. Damage to the cornea and the vital ‘limbal’ cells that surround it can have severe consequences, and can ultimately lead to blindness. In this animation we explore how doctors treat such problems and how regenerative medicine is helping in the battle to restore sight.

I'm working with 3D bioprinting of the cornea at Florida A&M and with Che Connon (UK professor who first 3D printed the cornea this year). We are getting closer and closer everyday to solving the world shortage of cornea transplants. Hearing everyone's stories is touching and I'm optimistic for the future

@StevePhillips

@@Sukuonlinetvmedia1 The eye can go a different shape like that of a rugby ball. A condition known as Keratoconus. When that happens spectacles will not be of much use. Years ago they would then prescribe hard contact lenses, called, gas permeable. The soft contact lenses are for eyes that are more flat surface. But these days they can make soft contact lenses for them with Keratoconus. Here is information about it: (ker-uh-toe-KOH-nus) occurs when your cornea - the clear, dome-shaped front surface of your eye - thins and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape. Your eyes need exercise just as much as the rest of your body does. The eyes also need vitamin D that they get from sunshine. But if people always wear glasses, they will not get vitamin D from sunshine. This is because vitamin D cannot pass through glass. .

Hi there, just to clarify we don't usually transplant limbal stem cells from donors.- we transplant limbal stem cells from the other eye (if it is healthy). Outside of the US, donor limbal stem cells can be used but with lots of strong immunosuppression medication to prevent rejection. We transplant corneas (without limbal stem cells) all the time though!

@@IamColt13 Fireworks. I was standing about 10 meters away as a battery (with many shots in one, I don't know what it's called in English) topped over and shot wild in various directions. All the others started to run away right away, but somehow I decided to look on. And bam, the 4th or 5th shot hit me straight in the eye. I was wearing normal glasses. The glass broke and I guess it was the broken glass that cut my eye. The fireball exploded straight after, luckily, not in my eye. The doctors removed about half of my iris and removed my lense and the "bag" that the lense was in, so it can't be replaced, as they deemed the tissue too damaged, it wouldn't serve me anymore. This happened just three weeks ago, the day after new years. Luckily, my retina is still intact. So now I'm waiting a year to get the stitches out of my cornea, and then we'll see what shape it's in and if it's possible to improve my sight with a hard contact lense. What happened to yours and what's the status?

I had cornea graft in my left eye, it was fine for a week improved my sight but afterwards went worse than before and now I get constant pain that starts at back of left eye, back of my head and down side of my neck. I was sorry I ever bothered also an eye professor took out my eye to look at the back of it, he was demonstrating to his student how it's done ,but it damaged my retina beyond repair. My optician told me there was no conceivable reason why he had to do that. may have been just part of training for his student.

your methods of healing may not be perfect for some people... and futhermore, we must need reasons or cause of healing, by drinking remedy liquid or swallow such rejunevation supplementary.. you cant fly or walking on the air... but if you can fly by spiritual power... that mean the reason are spiritual power not merely just by prayer or nothing by reason... so the methods we are using here are true, prayer thru spiritual power heals us... whilst some people dont have the preparation or not enlightened to have it like your ways, they find other methods like described before... Namaste..

Mark Macdonald I have reoccurring cornea abrasions. I got a deep scratch on my cornea and it wouldn't heal. I tried all types of medicines that didn't work. But I finally found what works and its coconut oil. I use tera tear eye drops through out the day and at night I use coconut oil. I put it directly in my and all over my lid. it has truly been my holy grail. I haven't had a bad episode yet. I really urge you to give that a try. Plus it helps with the pain as well.
