+Kamsorn Than, there is really no way to tell how much fluid should be in your transmission without connecting Scan tool and reading temperature and draining extra. Unless someone else online have performed ATF fluid change on the same car as yours and measured and posted results online. Because I don't know if 5 quarts is too much or just perfect.

For me, I think the $150 scanner is just too expensive for DIYers. Since you have the tool, can you show us the correlation between a infrared scanner and the scangauge. Maybe, let the car idle for 5 or 10 min to warm up the transmission, and measure both readings. I assume they would all be warmed up and the oil pan should reach equilibrium easily (because it's metal) with the warm fluid inside. As the they both cool down, can you draw a plot figure with time on x axis, and temperature of scangauge/infrared on y axis? If they are not too off, like scangauge shows 114, and infrared shows 105, I think that can save me $150. Thanks.

I successfully finished first transmission fluid drain and replace procedure on Lexus RX 350 2016 @60,000 miles using Amsoil Signature Series Fuel-Efficient Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. To be safe I purchased 8 quarts of fluid. This video is excellent thank you Mr. Repairvehicle! I just wanted to point out something new. For 2016 RX 350 you will need T40 for outer drain bolt then you will need 17mm hex to remove overflow straw tube assembly. Always remove your fill bolt first before draining using 24mm socket. First draining yielded about 3.4 quarts. So I filled with 3.4 then took car for test drive using all transmission modes. Second draining also yielded slightly discolored fluid about the same 3.4 quarts came out. So I filled again with 3.6 then using Scangauge II with car running and leveled I opened outer drain bolt and about half quart of fluid was drained in excess. After transmission fluid temperature #1 reading hit 104F I fastened the T40 bolt to reseal transmission pan. So in conclusion I have 1 quart extra Amsoil just in case I need. The car runs amazing! Same as it did before but now with new synthetic fluid :)

This is hands down the best diy video that I've seen for this procedure. I used to work for toyota and I liked everything in this video, the only thing I would have done differently is at 12:06 I usually let the trickle of atf turn into more of a drip before putting the plug in as this shows that the level of of the fluid is truly meeting the tip of the red check tube. If there is still a stream the level is still technically too high but I doubt it's high to the point where it will hurt anything.

Yikes! I have thought of allowing the dealership to perform this service on my tacoma. Since a person cannot monitor how they do it, then it is impossible to see if the technician does it properly, and transmissions without the right amount of fluid can appear to be fine for a period that makes it past the warranty period. In fact, they could say they perform it and never even perform the service at all; and without checking you may never know.

I did this yesterday and it worked PERFECTLY!!!!!! My 2012 Camry has felt like "it's slipping" upon the first drive of the day. Forward or reverse, for quite a while. In the "olden days" this usually indicated that the trans fluid was low. This has been happening since I had the trans serviced by the local Toyota dealer at 100K miles, it now has 172K. And the bastards charged me almost 500 bucks to have this done! Anyways.....the car recently threw a MIL. Upon checking it with a ScanTool 3140 it came back with 2 transmission errors. Something about a 4th gear servo and a error with a OD solenoid related to the torque converter. Sounds to me like dirty or dead trans fluid. Wow, a replacement trans is $3500.00!!!! So I did this fix using 3 quarts of Valvoline Maxlife ATF. I already have a ScanGage in my Tundra, so I used that for the fluid temps. 3 quarts was perfect! After the warm up about a 1/4 of a quart came out and then it was buttoned up. Codes are gone and the weird surging and what felt like a miss in high gears (usually lugging the car a little) are GONE!!!!! Thanks repairvehicle !!!! I really appreciate your hard work on this!!!!!!!!

Nice to see a simple practical method for checking fluid levels on sealed Toyotas. The video at WeberAuto for Toyota Transaxle Fluid Level Check - No Dipstick is like a 4 hour job (for me), and I don't have the vacuum pump and other exotic tools. This sealed transmission concept is engineering nightmare. If they want to give us a sealed transmission, give a OBDII scan read out on the level, or better yet, a gauge with level and temp. I like synthetic as it has better properties. Will have to see if it meets Toyota ATF M-V (Type 5) requirements.

I think one of the worst things to come from lack of transmission fluid dipstick is the inability to monitor the fluid by simply looking at its color and fluid level. I do not know who's idea it was to delete the dipstick, but I am certain it was a bad idea. Inspecting and servicing the fluid should be easier than this.

Thanks for the instructions. I used this information to better understand all that is involved. I decided to keep things simple. I just got finished replacing the transmission oil that drained out. I drained from the cold transmission, measured the exact quantity by filling the oil into a 2 litter clear juice container, then I used another exact juice container to fill new oil to the exact same height. I refilled the transmission with this quantity , it was about 1.5 litres. I will probably go through this routine at each oil change. The 2010 RX 350 has 107 000km and looked dirty but not too bad, could still make out that it was red when some dripped on my hand. I used the toyota WS fluid as it is only $7.50 Canadian , half the price of the Amsoil, plus I don't like mixing fluid types.

Ambient air temperature around the outside of the transmission would effect the surface temp of the transmission. I am sure there is a consistent air temp and exterior temp that could be matched up to the right fluid temperature inside. It would take a lot of work to discover what the variances are. Since ambient temperatures can be all over the map, it would have to be an unreliable way of servicing the fluid. If a person used the scan gauge to check the fluid level is at 105 degrees, then they could measure ambient air temp, then use infrared measurement of the surface of the transmission and then document the 3 temperatures in a no-wind environment. You would have to recreate the perfect ambient temperature with no wind for a given surface temperature to be an accurate way of knowing when the fluid level can be checked upon servicing. When you see all the factors created to make an accurate surface temperature, then you can see why using the scan gauge is the easiest way to be certain of the fluid temperature.

Toyota is realizing that they are making money on repairs like their competitors. Toyota cars are super reliable. They want people to believe that fluid is good for 100k and people don't realize that regular fluid cannot go for 100k without causing serious damage to the inside of the transmission. I followed "repairvehicle" tutorials and drained and fill ATF on my Lexus RX350, 2015. I would like to share my experience. I drained 1.9 L when removed drain plug and plastic tube. Then I drained another 1.1 L after I removed transmission pan and filter. So I drained total 3.0 L, then I added 3.6 L of new fluid, started the vehicle and run it in Park position until the temperature reached 104 F (40 C) . I used ScanGauge 2. Right after I removed the drain plug and let access of the fluid drain out. As a result , I drained 800 ml (0.8 L ), what is 200 ml more than I added ( 3.6 L) . I am a bit concern - why I have got drained 200 ml. more than I added. My thought is maybe because I didn't shift the gear a few times from Park to Drive and the fluid didn't have a chance to go to torque converter. I know for the vehicle with a dip stick you have to go through the gears, but couldn't find any recommendation for Toyota/Lexus. In a few weeks I will be doing second drain and fill and if somebody gives me advise in this matter, I will appreciate it.

@repairvehicle

Very good question. After you done with cheap fluid, it's now in the transmission at least 70%. With cheap fluid you have 70% inside transmission and 30% amsoil. With this method you are not gaining anything by adding 30% amsoil, because majority of the fluid inside transmission is cheap garbage. Doing drain and fill amsoil is not waste of money, it's a guarantee to 100% amsoil atf inside transmission.

When you mix WS with Amsoil, your WS fluid is being rejuvenated and transmission life is extended.
@paulbouverette503
@paulbouverette503 5 жыл бұрын
Nothing will happen if you mix them. I used Aisin Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF-0WS , pricey but good stuff. I have a 2008 Lexus ES 350. Drained and filled 2 times. I had exactly 4 quarts of fluid that drained out after the two drains. I put two quarts back in both times. Shifts perfect.

Can amsoil be intermixed with Toyota WS fluid? I heard it’s not good to mix fluids...

Yes it can be mixed. Amsoil formulated their atf to be mixed with ws and transmission works great, better than factory ws fluid

@@repairvehicle Thank you! That's great to know. You did not explicitly say it but it seems like you are saying that toyota ws is not 100% synthetic. I'm curious if that has been confirmed. So..I did the drain then couldn't find that inner tube, tried and tried and nothing. My vehicle is a 2012 4Runner SR5. Bought it with 80K miles on it, I don't know but noticed the bolts were smaller than yours... is that right?...anyway, I added exactly the same amount that came out (3 Qts.).
@repairvehicle
@repairvehicle 4 жыл бұрын
Your 4runner should have 2 drain plugs if I am not mistaking? One for draining the fluid and other for measuring fluid level with overflow tube. If you don't have overflow tube, it means someone has been messing around with transmission in the past and who knows what they did if they added correct amount of ATF. Size of the bolts being smaller maybe because they are not original bolts.

I will get the old fluid tested to make sure the transmission is in good shape. Will replace the fluid after another 10-15k miles and will make sure if the tube is there or not. Thank you for replying.

ATF temp 104 to 113F. drain plug 30ft-lb. Fill plug 36ft-lb. I go to the dealer for crush washers. You can find it online but its easier for me stop by the dealer and get washers. @@repairvehicle Thank You for The Best Information and for replying. My bad- It’s not a hybrid. Local dealer told me yesterday that I need the serial # off the tranny to get both the right crush washers & drain/fill plugs. The drain plug may be tapered or straight shank thus the reason requiring the #. None are in stock so has to order🤣 (tried 3 dealerships). I could probably reuse all, but I’m a rookie so want to take extra precautions. Thanks again for your content and Help, I’m looking forward to getting on this project (67k miles)and having a piece of mind, just that Toyota is making a little more difficult than Honda. 🤷‍♂️

@@mapley2167 Never did it because the bolts holding the pan are corroded and it was shaping up to be a nightmare in the making when one of them snaps. If my rav4 never leaked atf, why can’t I just drain when engine is cold and then put the exact same amount back in? Then repeat a couple more times in the coming weeks? If the transmission never leaked, the level should still be the same as when the factory filled it.
