But Robert Blair ‘Paddy’ Mayne remained and remains the devil with the heart of a poet! He lived and he died with his ghosts- he departed too soon but no man deserved his rest more. For the soldier whom death feared and the enemy trembled! 🍀

He died in their very first mission they were told it would be suicide if they jumped but Stirling and the men wanted to go to relieve Tobruk. Of 65 men only 22 survived. Eion died on impact with the ground some were dragged over cliffs by wind that caught their chutes. It was a violent sand storm they jumped into. So tragic but fact is they completed the mission still and for a time being saved Tobruk. If not for men like these willing to sacrifice to take those small chances we would not have won
