Yes, the Sturm und Drang period is truly with us! From here on, Haydn's symphonies become bigger, faster, louder, softer, darker, brighter--in a word, more intense and more highly contrasted generally. No. 39, in G minor, is a tense, passionate piece that most likely influenced the two symphonies by Mozart (Nos. 25 and 40) in the same key.
