I have used SharkBite fittings all over my house on copper pipes. There are plenty of advantages but the things that are different than regular copper fittings are: 1) the pipes or fittings spin where connected (not normally an issue but can be) 2) the lack the stability of normal fittings so pipes sag over distance and need to be supported more 3) you want to keep outward pressure off the connections which gets back to supporting again 4) you lose electrical ground on cold water pipes and may need to ground across fittings 5) I would not personally put them in walls because of their shorter life 6) you should keep the insertions and removals for a fitting to a minimum 7) as mentioned the insertion piping must be Cut Straight, Round, Properly De-burred and Fully Inserted I personally have never had an issue with any SharkBite product and have no issue recommending them.

Exellent Videoo RR channel sent me this way. I will be in the near future having to upgrade the plumbing in the house. Education to me is key so i know what i can or cannot do on my own and also what should be happening in a correct install. Thanks for putting this up.

You make an excellent point about skipping all the glues and chems when dealing with CVPC transitions. The added expense of the P-T-C fittings make sense compared to all of that. Manufacturers are trying to chip away to create some market advantage. For example, Legend came out with the ClearLOC fittings that don't "need" the pipe depth marked, but didn't delete the insert like Sharkbite did for MAX. Others could potentially save money by also deleting the insert, but likely will not for several years due to the costs of re-introducing new product.

The sharbites are awesome and work extremely well. There are a few frequent places I've seen them fail. I've seen them have issues if they were buried and not wrapped in silicon. Also on locations where I didn't see the depth marks on pipes. Another place is outside walls that aren't insulated. They almost always pop at the shark bite when the pipe freezes in those walls.

I have been using Shark Bites at the connection to water heaters for the past two swap outs of each, so at least 12-15 years. It's fine, it's exposed and easy to remove. I have noticed that the o-rings deteriorate like rubber exposed to alcohol. They leave black sludge and smear off the pipe when I removed them so basically they are almost pointless for what I am using them for. I replace them again each time. If you don't tighten the threaded connections enough at the top (a mistake I don't make anymore) they are great to be able to spin the pipe where solder it's too late. I would never use them in a wall. I don't like them under sinks because they flop around on the pipe as shutoffs. Shutoffs being the part you need in an emergency I don't want them causing the emergency. So in and exposed area, in a tight space that I can't solder, in a basement, I would use them but 25 years isn't long in a house. The soldered connections have lasted 3 times that. O-rings can be reliable especially if not exposed to mechanical movement (many people think of sink faucets leaking due to o-rings, they are constantly being moved and wearing a flat spot in the ring), but if they break down chemically, how long will they last. Can't test that as effectively in a short test. I am curious about the copper press fitting, how do they connect inside, I will look them up next. A thought on copper VS pex. Copper is a natural anti microbial and has been in homes for a long time and proven reliable. PEX is a plastic, often heated by hot water and likely leaches plastics into the water. Long term I suspect that health will decline with PEX water supplies where Copper was an advantage at one time. Curious what your thoughts are. I enjoyed watching the video and learning the facts about Shark Bites, they do have their uses. Great work.

That copper guage..thats just for press fittings? Or is for the bite fittings too? Gotta get that too...

Yup i rely on orings daily.. and they still fail all the time. Mainly, it's when disturbed. I still dont like sharkbite unless its for temp usage. Yes installation of the oring is critical. Proper fill, lube and method. Propress is oring also. Some day i am sure they will allow cpvc and pex may require a sleeve.

I can't stand cpvc...Too bad a lot of service work is in tight spaces. Bites are great for transitioning , but again the tight spaces prevent pressin sometimes...No basements where im at so...

It’s not though and if you take the time to understand how they’re made and how well they work you’d know but instead you’ve provided no context or data to back up your preposterous statement. Be better.
