Replacing rear brake pads and rotors on a 2011-2013 maybe 2014 Ford Edge. In this video I show you how to remove the caliper and the rotor and the rear brake noise dampener.

Good video, thanks for taking the time to help others out. I laughed at the "if you don't know how to take off the tire, you shouldn't be changing your brake pads".

Hey Brother, just wanted to say thank you. No one on any other videos I found showed the detail you provided. I also had to get a new rotor and a new bolt, I broke one also. Thank you! Mario

Try your 13 mm line or open end wrench for the nut on the noise dampener to avoid twisting it off. Seen it on another video.. you tube can be very helpful..

I have serviced many of these and to not break the bolts off you need to use a thin 15 mm on the inside bolt pins and just tap on the 15mm wrench as you turn the 13mm on the outside bolt they come right off that way. Always tap to loosen the 15mm nut on the pin. This video was very well done good job.

It's easy for that cube to round out. In that case, it's easier to use a c-clamp, applying slight pressure, then turn the round metal part of the caliper with an adjustable channel lock. Retighten the c clamp as the caliper works its way back when you turn the round metal piece.

Whoever doesn’t have that cube piece to compress the piston, i used needle nose pliers to twist it back in , little bit harder probably but definitely doable. Open up the bleeder valve if it doesn’t push in 👍

Tip: put some anti-seize on the the little bolt that holds the rotor to the hub. It will come off a lot easier the next time. I needed a special tool (thankfully my neighbor who's a mechanic had one) to remove mine the 1st time.

I recently did mine on a 2013 edge same style brakes...when you put that top bolt back in did you have to hold the other bolt that touches the boot with anl open face wrench while you tighten the back one?

A big thanks from me too for the video! Also working on the wife's Edge. I already had the wheel off and was ready to go when I encountered the noise dampener, and all of the additional mechanisms in place for the parking brake. A lot more going on in there than what I had ever seen before on past GM, Dodge, and Subaru brake pads I have replaced. I had no idea how I was going to get to that caliper bolt that has the dampener on it, never occurred to me to flip open that plastic cap. Curious where you are located? I see everything isn't covered with rust, unlike up here in Northern MI. Also going to pickup that square caliper tool. Thanks again!

Colin Murphy glad I could help! I got the caliper tool from O’Reilly’s. I’m about an hour east of St. Louis, farming country. Vehicle frames and suspension usually stay fairly rust free for 15 years or so. But that edge was a 2011 and my Silverado is a 2010 and they are both rust free underneath except for some surface rust in places. Also we don’t get a whole lot of snow usually and if they do salt the roads we wash our cars a few days later to get all the salt off.
@cm4904
@cm4904 5 жыл бұрын
MeisterTV that sounds incredible! They salt the roads non-stop here during winter months. Wheels get rusted onto the face of the rotor, usually have to give a good kick to break it free once the logs are off. And I did find the tool at my local Advance, no O’Reily’s nearby. Thanks again!

That little special tool deal was a bunch of bullshit. Probably took a half hour on each piston, and both me and my brother ripped our knuckles up. Whoever came up with that as a solution should be shot. Other than that, great video and big help getting my first brake job done.

You’ve got to line up the nub on the pad with the cut out on the piston or the caliper wont slide in to position.

@@gunlover1955 Thanks. 👊 I don't actually remember what I did but I was able to get them removed without breaking either one. Then, earlier this year, just as she was reaching the end of her financing term, the computer crapped out & SIL ended up having to dump a chunk of change into the Edge. Rather than trade it not running in order to get probably like $800 for it (on paper), she had it fixed, continued driving it & car shopped until she found a trade-in deal she could live with. They gave her a fair trade in value & a decent deal on a Nissan. She, unfortunately, just happened to purchase one of the crappy Edges that was plagued with problems. Built on a Monday or Friday, I suppose... 😕 Thanks again for your reply. 👊 🇺🇸

Did you have to bleed the brakes?
@DoyleFM
@DoyleFM 4 жыл бұрын
Probably way too late but you do not have to bleed the brake system. The components replaced were independent of the hydraulic system. The only effect this process had on the fluid was that when he turned the piston to push it back in, the brake fluid that was inside the caliper was pushed back toward the brake reservoir (under the hood). If you take note of the level before & after, it will appear to have more brake fluid in the reservoir AFTER the brake job than you did before it.

I don’t see why you would need to use the t30 on the dampeners if you’re using a wrench because you could just remove the bolt and the dampener all at once

Decent video but, you should always use a c clamp to compress the caliper before removing it. This takes away all stress trying to do it after it is off and further damaging the rotor.
@KyleLesmeister
@KyleLesmeister 4 жыл бұрын
NIGHTOWL 1963 maybe you missed the part where the caliper on the rear of the Ford Edge can’t be compressed with a c clamp. Only screwed back in with that special tool.

@@KyleLesmeister I was unaware of this special tool. I did not need it and used a C clamp on mine, 2007. Either ford changed the calipers or my son in law did it. And there were no dampiners either or a place for them. Could have just been the year of the car.

could of saved lot of time taking just 2 bolts to take the whole caliber and assembly off, also you can use a clamp as well to push the thing back in place

Jason Griffith no you will damage the caliper. Most you can just push back in with a c clamp but these you have to turn in.

@KyleLesmeister
@KyleLesmeister 5 жыл бұрын
zemzabob yes on this vehicle on the back brakes you do need the special tool. On the front you can use a c clamp and push the piston into the caliper. But on the back you have to twist the piston back into the caliper. If you try to use a c clamp you will either break the clamp or ruin your caliper.
