I just did this same thing. Bought a cap and 2 diaphragms from Ross Racing Performance. So far so good. Now I have an extra just incase.

Same happened to me, also got the ross kit, recommended by kern. Really should be a recall by BMW with how common this is...but oh well. At least it's an easy fix I guess

I believe he just had a one time malfunction. This was not 10 minutes after it happened, but it would smoke if he did turn it on without repairing it first yes.

Do it bro i hesitated now i am waiting for pcv diaphragm and my car is sitting. Made the same noise but didnt smoke so much. In fact it didnt even smoke until i opened oil cap to see if squealing would go away

Had this happen a couple times, I turned it off and turned it back on and it goes away. Seems to happen after idling for some time. Are you sure this fixed the problem, you have to idle for awhile after turning it back on again to see if it is fixed.

There was still residual smoke and oil being burned in the system that had to be flushed out and you can only do that by running the car.

You just have to replace the whole PCV unit, not a hard job at all. Take out old and put in new.
