Honda's turbo engines dilute oil like crazy and toyota's been up to their necks in recalls lately. Standards all around are plummeting, even among brands known for their "reliability". Comparatively the b58 doesn't sound all that bad given what you're getting for the cost

I think a lot of these issues today are being engineered in by design cost, like plastic covers, water pumps etc, we know they have a much shorter shelf life and can’t hold up to a decade of extreme heat cycles and subsequent gasket leaks. The best engineered cars are behind us today, it’s a great shame.

Some failures are due to poor/infrequent servicing. Oil deterioration is a common thread. Sticking to annual or 12k mile BMW service schedule with OEM parts will certainly help. Suspect that when many if these cars are out of warranty, they also stop getting serviced to BMW spec. Had BMWs for 20 years and use BMW servicing. BMW discount parts by up to 40% for older cars. The total cost of servicing and convenience of using BMW is worth the uplift - an uplift that won't be as high if prevents failures. I have a 2017 540i stage 1 MHD, that still take to main dealer for servicing. I let it warm up (oil temp warm) rag it, then drive calmly for 10m+ to cool. Sometimes put heating to max with AC off and windows open. Brake pads/disks and tyres get from a reputable independent.
@CabanaD
@CabanaD 3 күн бұрын
If you are interested in keeping your BMW you should consider using the oil service schedule of 6 mos or 6k miles whichever comes first. Most dealers are going to emphasise keeping it to the 12mos/1year “annual” schedule and give you a story about how great the motors are and how good synthetic oil is. It’s easy to fall into the trap of sticking to the “free” oil service schedule. However, any mechanic will say that if you are in traffic, idle your car for periods of time, or drive short trips you should be servicing your oil at 6mos/6k miles. While motors and motor oil are arguably better than in years past why you change your oil is to filter out the unburned elements of combustion that are left in the oil as well as moisture due to condensation from simply heating/cooling of the engine. Keeping to the 12 mos.“annual” /12k mile schedule will affect the lubricity of the engine oil which in turn affects the piston rings negatively. Watch the back end of a not-so-old BMW at a stop light when it pulls away and you’re likely to notice some blue-ish /grey puff of smoke as it takes off and you’ll know that it has been “dealer maintained”. That smoke means combustion is now slipping past the piston rings and exiting through the exhaust. Vehicles like this will routinely fail emissions testing (stricter states like here in California) and are signaling some major repairs. Used BMW tip: When I worked at an independent BMW shop I saw a vast amount of BMW’s that were off lease (3-year) that had received 0 to 1 oil services during their lifetime regardless of miles. These were often perfect near-new looking BMW’s. We also serviced Mini’s that typically had no engine oil registering on dip stick (when first released). Be sure to insist on records that servicing has been performed.
@TheJmebe
@TheJmebe 2 күн бұрын
@@CabanaD Good points. It would be useful if engines were able to sample and report on oil quality as well as quantity. As you say, usage/climate is biggest factor bdefore miles - although for some cars even this can be misleading - I recently bought an MX5 NC1 that was owned by a 75 yr old gent that rarely drove it (45k miles) and it used so much out without me realising, that oil starvation under hard load destroyed the crank bearings and hence the engine. MX5 specialist commented that is more common on low mileage cars, on theory that of something happening to scraper piston ring, not seen as much on cars that are regularly driven! Fortunately, modern BMWs do at least record servicing digitally - which has to be a more reliable record than the printed service books. If I did have to fork out servicing every 6k miles on a standard G30 540i, I'd have to contemplate switching to a much smaller capacity engine and smaller running costs!

My experience with a brand new BMW X7 40i: it’s losing oil, but the engine is clean and there’s no spot on the ground, I’ve had in for repair at the dealer 3 times for a total of just under 4 months, the last time I turned it in was on 11 Sep and it’s still in the shop (over 3 months) and they hope to have it fixed by this Monday (23 Dec 24) BMW North has been absolutely horrible to me and the dealer I bought it from the entire time, the dealer told them they should replace the engine in Aug, but BMW N refused and continued to refuse until 2 weeks ago, I’ve tried to get them to replace it with a different vehicle of the same type but but they refused, I offered to buy a 60i and eat the price difference myself, I paid $94.000, they offered $74,000 to trade, this for a vehicle that has 3600 miles (170 of those put on by them during testing) that has been in the shop for half of the time I’ve owned it, they refused to transfer the extended warranty I bought without charging me a fee for doing so, so I refused. They designed and built this car, how can they possibly not have it repaired after a combined 1/3 of a calendar year?

only problem with my 540i(2017) with 130k km / 80k~ miles was the coolant leaks through the radiator which eventually made me change the radiator entirely(500-600 to replace OE part). that's the only thing I had to replace outside basic maintenance (oil, filters, brakes and brake fluid). Why does everyone who has only put a few thousand miles on their personal car always give it praise for not having issues? You've only put 8k miles on it since your ownership...I would HOPE it can at least do that few of miles without having issues. Talk to us after 80k miles and lets see how reliable it has been. Or 180k miles...will it even survive that long without a major failure? Doubt it.

I got it with 45000 miles (I think) and we are close to 60000 miles now. I've been pretty happy with the car other than a few quirks I've mentioned in the "I complain about my BMW X7" video. I'd say you get a lot more of the money with the X7. I drove the MDX and a few others similar models, but the X7 was the most fun to drive and felt the most quiet luxury inside and out, which I prefer. People get caught in $1000 services as the dealer will charge you $200 to change the filter, but If you don't mind doing some of the maintenance and work yourself, it's a great car!

For mods no, u can make right under 450wheel on a gen1 b58 with just a downpipe and a tune, n55 u need chargepipe, intercooler, and downpipe to safely go stage 2, and will still be making less power. I just bought a used gen1 2017 b58 powered 440i for 24k, with 50k miles which is worth the price difference in the b58 to n55, I’d spend the extra couple grand, now gen2 b58s are a completely different story as they are around 40k, then a n55 would be the obvious option money wise, comparing oranges to apples at that point

Smug BMW shill: "...but like any engine...." 300,000 mile Acura: "hold my beer" I was raving about this engine as well but if they wanted to take heat insulation seriously then they wouldn't use an aluminum block. An iron block (as seen with 2JZ) would probably be the solution to every problem.

Acura? Does not drive anywhere close to a b58 equipped BMW, not even in the same league. 300k Acura how many times have you had to replace the transmission? lol

@@james10165 The power steering pump broke once, and now at >400k last I heard [he] wasn't driving it anymore. My guess is the transmission finally crapped out. But okay, [his] formerly owner E39 530 did drive a little better than his 2011 TL, but the Acura definitely drove better than an E60 5 series 🤮. His E39 once needed a new alternator, and then there was a dead cylinder. And then something else happened and that's when he got the Acura TL shortly after. He said he'd never buy another BMW ☠️😂

Actually, BMW is ranked as the 7th most reliable auto company out of 20+ companies selling vehicles in the US, according to Consumer Reports magazine. Since their collaboration with Toyota before the introduction of the Supra, BMW's reliability has steadily climbed. Also, in one of CR's recent issues, BMW is now ranked #1 overall regarding: Quality Performance Efficiency Reliability Interior Infotainment Ride comfort and interior quietness

@@davepaturno4290They literally rate reliability of a brand new car with 0 age and 0 miles, lmaooo. The newer ones are plagued with ridiculously expensive coolant leaks. Once they start to age.

@iAlwaysSpeakTheTruth Of course they rate new vehicles. If the generation is new, CR holds back rating the vehicle until they accumulate sufficient data.

🥸Disposable product because they don’t want it to last past 100k miles to sell you another and for used car buyers to buy parts.

Tell us you're stupid enough to pay someone else over $100/hour to work on your car without telling us, bro. These engines are made for automotive enthusiasts. Unfortunately, they are also sold to elitist schmucks like yourself who use them as a status symbol then complain about reliability any time basic maintenance has to be performed. You seem like the type...

Not true my N54 has lasted almost 140k miles and I’ve seen N55s with 300k miles. Most bmw owners I know buy parts from FCP euro not the dealer.

Absolute BS. If change the oil every 5k and do the maintenance as prescribed, you should get 200k out of the motor. I did out of an S52 and the incredible S54. That is with countless runs on the Tail of the Dragon, cross country trips and track days.
