Seeing the rust reminds me of working on my cars when I lived in NJ. Glad I moved to Florida. No more rust, but the sun is hell on clear coat.

Ok. It's simple... Ditch the 4 cylinder. Get an old Camry from the 90s with a V6 3L. Toss in some hypereutectic pistons (with a little tuning adds 100hp from what I've been told by people who put these modded engine in the old Toyota MR2s). Get some 2X3 thick walled tubing and make a full chassis. Mount the engine mid-ships. Tuneable coil-overs and swaybars. Good roll bar. Drive like a maniac. See? Easy-peasy. ;)

Last year sometime I noticed something suddenly dragging underneath my 07 GS on the way home from work at 1 am. Thought it was the exhaust. Nope one or both of the straps rusted out and I was periodically scraping the tank on the freeway home for about 10 miles. I was lucky.

Thanks for your reply. I've reached out before as I've owned a Milan as well as numerous Panthers. My current is a 07 GS with 92 K. I'm the 2nd owner and have had it 5 years and driven about 45 K since then. I do have a question for you. Would an intake gasket leak cause some minor oil film in the coolant reservoir? I'll explain. I had my mechanic change out the plugs a few months ago and he noticed one of the plugs was wet with coolant. Except for pinging once, no other symptoms. He did the work and replaced the gasket. No issues. Runs fine. Never overheated. No leaks. He said the oil was residual from the gasket leak and not to worry. I wanted a second opinion. I want to hold on to car and baby it although she's getting old. I'm going to ask him what intake replacements he used. Hopefully not Dorman. Sorry for the long Convo. I appreciate you taking the time to read it. Thanks, Joe
@OldeCarrGuy Жыл бұрын
@@JO-ku1uc hey Joe! I’m not inclined to think that oil would get into the anti freeze via the intake as there’s no oil passages in the intake. The oil in the spark plug hole is common with a leaking intake gasket. If oil is getting into the reservoir, I’d be leaning towards a faulty oil cooler or worse case, head gasket. Having said that, to determine if your guy is right, flush your cooling system and clean out the coolant reservoir. Once all that is done, check it periodically for oil residue. If it doesn’t come back, you’re good. But if it doesn’t, further diagnosis is required.

Jason: The connector to the fuel pump has a fastener that attaches to the frame that is tucked out of sight. Detach it and let it hang loose. If you ever have to change the fuel pump again you can change the pump without dropping the tank, just push the tailpipe out of the way. I never want to drop a tank in a panther platform again--nasty job without a lift!😣 Oh by the way, Comfort Inn, Red Roof Inn---ummm I'm in!! (will it work in the US, it's metric isn't it)😆😆

@OldeCarrGuy5 ай бұрын
It's difficult to diagnose without seeing the car. However, I would start checking fuses and relays. Also, try dumping a couple gallons of gas in it. If your gas gage is stuck, it may just be low on fuel. Start with the simple things.
@davidregen13589 ай бұрын
Here's a coincidence. This morning, for the first time ever, I woke up wondering about the shape of the gas filler pipe on my 1995 Lincoln Town Car. A few minutes ago, for the first time ever and without any query, I see this video which probably shows that very thing. Is it true that the tank and filler pipe are the same in these Fords and my Town Car? I am trying to devise a probe to measure depth of gas in my tank, since my instrument cluster went dark. Any ideas about dark instrument clusters?
@OldeCarrGuy9 ай бұрын
The filler neck/gas tank set up is the same. As far as the digital clusters going dark, Start with the #3 fuse under the dash. If the fuse is good it is likely a bad solder connection in the printed circuit board. It's a fairly easy repair if you're handy with a soldering iron.

You probably have the closest thing to a reasonable reason to waste the time pulling a used tank here, already having the parts car and putting it in a car you're planning to flip. For anyone planning to keep the car, or anyone with less time to waste I'd spend the $250 on a new tank and straps. Also probably worth the time to pick up a set of new strap studs from the dealer if you don't have all day to fight it or are working on the ground like I was on mine. The new studs are designed to snap off after you install them so they don't hang down where they can puncture the fuel tank in an accident. I would never waste the time on a used tank on a car I plan on keeping. It's not a job I ever want to have to do twice on the same car. It makes it a lot easier to get out if you unplug everything you can reach before you drop the tank. the vent on the right side has a clip that can pull out, or you can just pull the whole tube out if the clip is stuck. No need to cut anything there. Just make sure you plug it back in, otherwise you get a gas cap warning light.
@OldeCarrGuy Жыл бұрын
You gotta save where you can, but yes! If I was keeping the car, I’d have gone new!
@glennnickerson8438 Жыл бұрын
I figured out what the stud size was and used some exhaust studs from Dorman. Used lots of never seize when I put them back in.
@johngaltline9933 Жыл бұрын
@@glennnickerson8438 on mine, the issue wasn’t rust on the studs, but that they were too short to get the new straps to stretch on to. The dealer stud kit has long studs so you can get the straps on, and once tightened down the extra length snaps off so they can’t puncture the tank in an accident.
