Cool video... I'm no where near a professional mechanic and I found part#600-3231 at NAPA for $13.00 (longer studs with new nuts) to be the perfect way to reconnect the straps properly.
@michaelfishman717410 ай бұрын
All these parts are a pain when it is time to replace because of the rust. My gas tank fell to the ground due to too much rust. I had a tank full of gasoline. I was lucky nothing happened. I was parked at the gasoline station. Make it a habit to check the brake and fuel lines because of the rust too.....

Thank you so much for showing this. I seriously struggled and learned new words. I got it back together laying on the garage floor. Now that I have to swap out my tank 3 years later I just ordered these studs form Ebay for $13.98. (OEM NEW Ford Crown Victoria Fuel Tank Mounting Strap Studs Shear Bolts TWO) 2006 Crown Vic.

Crown Vics are the same, Big shock. Found out your tip the hard way. The reason the tips snap off is so in a collision from the rear, the studs will not penetrate the fuel tank.

This is for fire prevention in 70+ mph rear crashes. You can change these pumps with the tank still in place, I've done tons of them. You can buy new bolts at a hardware store and make it work, but I wouldn't leave much of the bolt hanging down as in a 70mph+ rear crash, the tank can be presses into these bolts and piece the tank resulting in a fuel leak and possibly fire. Just have the car jacked up with the axle hanging down and wiggle the fuel pump out and over the axle. It can be done. You might have to push the exhaust pipe over to the side a bit. Great video!!!

MOTHERFKKR!! I'm a full-size Ford man have been all my life. my first car was a 1975 Ford LTD at age 16 in 77. I have had every version of four-door Ford LTD that they have made since 1975, I used to buy and sell police car so I bought hundreds of them. I changed a few tanks on the 2000 plus's and I've always wondered why that tank stud is so freaking short and now I KNOW! I don't know how I got it done in the past I think I managed to loosen the stud up and back it out a little and then get it started but this is insanity. I've got a Ford here I've been beating on for three weeks trying to get that nut up in there. now I'm going to have to take the whole tank back out to do this. if there's another video that shows this I haven't found it. I want to tell you how much I appreciate this video. it was an eye-opener! absolutely!

I have fought this issue myself many times and you can get the straps back on without replacing the studs, but you will definitely fight for this. A shortcut I found to work for me is to gently pry the exhaust far enough towards the passenger side and insert a piece of a 4x4 between the driveshaft and the exhaust pipe. Once this is done, the fuel pump will come right out without any clearance issues and without even loosening the fuel tank straps. However, I was not aware of the one time use studs. Thanks a lot Ford! lol

Been a long time since I did a fuel pump on that body style crown vic but can't you pull the drive shaft and reach over the diff and R&R the pump with out dropping the tank? Couldn't remember but seems to ring a bell.... At any rate great tip!

Just ordered those studs from ford for an anticipated fuel pump replacement. Was able to get them but seems the supply is drying up considering the age of the car. You could probably with care duplicate this with a pice of drill rod and take a dremel cut off wheel and make a grove in the rod to snap off after installation. Thanks for the information and reason for this insanity.

This fuel pump can be changed without dropping the tank... Unhook the fuel lines. The wires coming from the fuel sending unit go into two wire looms each with a connector. The larger connector is a pain to get to but can be undone easily once you pull it out. The only thing that makes it necessary to drop the tank are the 3 wires going up over the tank to a connector above the tank. Traced those 3 wires back to the larger connector and cut them about 2" from it. Swapped the fuel pump, put it all back together, and spliced the wires back with heat- shrink butt connectors (14-16 guage) and a set of good crimpers. Splice was easily wrapped up into wire loom. Obviously be VERY careful if you heat shrink. We gave it a while for the fumes to air out and wiped everything with a shop towel. Worked like a charm and didn't drop the tank.

Yes and the only place you can get those scratches from Ford I'm waiting a week now for that my car is going in pieces for 2 weeks as I had to order a bunch of new tools and parts. And after 20 years of being disabled very difficult to do this stuff. I ain't no twenty-two-year-old anymore. Rocket sockets came in very handy. One of the 15 mm nuts was so damaged that I can see through the outside of it to the inside threads now that's a first for me. I want to be an auto technician in 89 before I became a home repair contractor there is much cleaner work being a home repair contractors then a mechanic buried in on disability income I have to do this work myself on my back in the driveway thank God I have an electric 1/2 inch impact. It was a lifesaver both the nuts
@mickeyharrington67852 жыл бұрын
How about just backing the stud out of the nut a little then get lower nut started,then run it back up?

Yes I had to do that myself order new studs and nuts they're the only ones that carry it and they're $30 for four of them because that's how it's sold

"You will fight and fight and fight to get that strap on and you'll never be able to get it on" Man you ain't never lied, I don't know how many times Iv'e fought those and ended up looking around the shop for matching all thread bolts and nuts and wondering why some lunatic engineer would design some shit like this, I wish i had his nuts in a vise. Anyway now i know, I'll be damned. Thanks for the great video. still a shit design in my opinion though.
@jarinwilson953910 жыл бұрын
On the Town Cars, this is not as common, heck I generally do not even have to drop the tank. The bolts holding the sending unit to the tank are 8mm if I remember right and the yellow wire you see, is the sending unit float level signal wire. If you are going to have the key in the on position or the vehicle running with it in the air, make sure you disable the air ride system. These really are not that bad of a job, just take your time.

No wonder I couldn’t put my gas tank straps back on. Ford wants you to bring it to them. F**k the engineers 🤬 That’s so stupid to cut the studs. I’ve been cursing my ass off trying to get the straps back on. I really started laughing when you said “you are going to fight, fight, fight trying to get the strap on.” Laughing because not only it was funny that I literally went through that before I looked up a video for this, but also I was laughing in pain because of the frustration. And I was about to start up my car after a 9 month long project. Had bad gas in the tank and I had to drop it to siphon out the bad fuel. Big thanks to you for explaining this frustrating situation!

I changed my fuel pump and did not take out the tank. But I have done something to the gauge set it in wrong because my fuel gauge is not working goes over full on me and don't want to come down, It did at first put in ten gallon and then filled it up later and went too full.

Wouldn't the fuel tank straps actually be shorter due to the fact it isn't shaped like a U because it doesn't need to go around 3 sides rather only 2?

What is the intention behind these one time use studs? Is it there to detract tampering with the fuel system?
@realfixesrealfast10 жыл бұрын
Since the straps are so long, at the factory they use the long studs to allow quick access in assembly. But, since they are long, they could possibly puncture the tank in the event of a rear end collision. So.... after they are installed, they snap them off. The trouble is, they don't tell us. So, we struggle trying to get them re-attached when we remove the tank.
