The 240s hub uses a 6802 bearing on the non-drive side, and a 15267 on the drive side.
The freehub uses two 6802 bearings.
6802 bearings:

15267 bearings:

I used the RapidRacerProducts bearing press and extraction tool to press all the bearings in:

Very helpful - thanks very much! My only comment is that you don’t need a spacer for pressing the drive side hub bearings in (@3:25) if you press the bearings in the other way around (i.e. press drive side bearings first, reinstall ratchet ring, insert axle, then press non-drive side bearings). Not an issue if you have a suitable spacer lying around the workshop, but for those of us that don’t it’s one less tool to buy 👍 Putting the components back together in this order also allows you to reinstall the ratchet ring before inserting the axle, should the hole in your ratchet ring tool not be wide enough to accommodate the axle.

Thanks for a great video. I just did the service. A couple of things I descovered reinstalling the wheel bearings I would install the drive side bearing first as you can use a normal socket to seat the bearing before the shaft goes in also the spacer washer needs to be seated in the rachet grove I used grease to keep it in place also my ebay tool did not clear the shaft so I could not tighten the drive side down with the shaft in place.

I’m just trying to find this out myself. I have a DT Swiss 240S hub and I belive there are two different types of bearing in the hub shell. Some bike shops say they’re the same but DT Swiss have said they’re different. It’s highly confusing. I recommend you wipe the outer seal during removal and check the text on the bearings both sides before buying new ones!

Leave the cassette on the hub, just pull the cassette and hub of as one unit. This also removes the outer drive side end cap at the same time, simples.

Great video 👍 Interested in what you said about pre load by adjusting the bearings, I was under the impression the 240s is pre loaded by the spacer collars and does not have any actual adjustment, it’s done by fine machining tolerances of the spacers?
@TheCyclingMan
@TheCyclingMan 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. There isn't any adjustment like with Mavic hubs for instance. But I still find you might need to adjust the bearings to get them to run freely - same is true with most cartridge hubs. If you tap them in lightly they might be just fine without any adjustment.

Do you have any strange pinging sounds from your rear wheel? We have similar wheels and mine makes that noise when riding mainly up hills. Also do you prefer dt Swiss hubs or hope hubs?
@TheCyclingMan
@TheCyclingMan 5 жыл бұрын
Are you sure that's not coming from the spokes? Try applying some grease to the spoke intersection and see if that helps. My Hope hubs on my mountain bike need far less attention. But they only have 4 pawls so are quite slow to engage. The star ratchet for road is better in this respect. I've not tried the newer Hope hubs with more pawls.

The Cycling Man : could one possible reason be: under bigger stress the cogs of the chainwheel "plucking" the chain-a little like pickin' the string of a guitar maybe? < kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqvUi6uqjJmrgM0 > the resulting vibrations could then continue from the chain (or the chainwheels) via hub-body to the spokes. i have this soft tone pling-pling on my mountainbike's DT swiss spline-wheels all the time when pedaling really steep. kind regards.

Hi, excellent video about the rear hub maintenance! I have a DT Swiss 240 rear hub with star ratchet, the problem is that the freewheel is so stiff that it doesn’t freewheel when I stop pedalling...It even transports the chain that the chain jumps off the cassette. It is almost like an engagementof the ratchets in the reverse direction...and it is unusually loud as well. Do you have an idea what it could be- can’t use the wheel like this... Do you always replace the sealing ring when you do hub maintenance? Is there a way to check the bearing sizes you need prior to dismantling? Thanks!
@TheCyclingMan
@TheCyclingMan 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ulrich. You'll really need to take it apart to see what's going on. A lot of times just cleaning it and re-greasing will do the job. No you don't need to replace the seal every time. You should be able to find spec sheets for your specific hub - to check the bearing sizes. Good luck and let us know how you get on!
