Hi
@bravokilo19723 жыл бұрын
I have changed many of these by myself from the bottom of my jeep using a long extension and swivel... Then plugged it up from the top. Not simple but very doable by yourself!
@fernandolouismiramontes25202 жыл бұрын
This is how I do it too. All from underneath, long extensions on ratchet to take bolt out and then reaching over the transmission with my hand to remove and install new crank sensor. Push wire up and over onto passenger side of engine and reconnect the plug.
@jedidias70912 жыл бұрын
I'm going to attempt it from the bottom first. Is it hard lining the sensor up is my concern and adding the bolt back from being so far away.
@robertsheeley8619 Жыл бұрын
I’ve done it both ways several times each. I find it much easier from the inside than from below. I use a wobble 1/4” extension and do this by myself with no issues at all. From underneath it takes around 30” of extensions versus one 10” wobble from the top. Plus the bolt goes in real easy from the top. But to each his own.
@bravokilo1972 Жыл бұрын
@@robertsheeley8619 I’ve always wanted to try it going in from the plug hole on the fire wall. But it takes a few extra steps to get at it but probably well worth it. Because mine is now stripped I’ve changed them out so much on my 99’ WJ 4x4..😖 But you are saying from the “top.” So are you referring to the plughole area under the dash? Or from the top of the engine compartment/bell housing area? Because if you are talking from the top of the engine compartment, that would pretty much be mission impossible too get a tool down into that small of an area…
@robertsheeley8619 Жыл бұрын
@@bravokilo1972 Yes I'm referring thru the plug hole. I have a shop manual and that's the way Chrysler says to do it. But like I said, I've done them both ways.

my 2004 wouldn't start so my shop diagnosed the crank sensor. (charged me $200 for labor! - but i guess maybe it was worth it, watching the difficulty of getting to it. ) As I drove off from the shop, I heard a new sound coming from below the shift area, mostly when decelerating, kind of like a computer disc, that with research we attribute to a cable rubbing on the drive shaft. The sound speeds up and slows down with the speed of the car. Does it make sense that this could have happened during the changing of the crank sensor? My shop is going to lift it up and take a look, but today (5 days later) it seems to be subsiding. Could the cable that was moved have worked it's way back to a more normal position?

My NTK sensor didn't line up perfect to start the bolt. So to get the sensor bolt back on is to put it on a magnet stick tool and place in thru the sensor and into the hole, then leave it in place. Then get out of the car and reach down there thru the engine bay and use your (left hand I think it was) hand to start the bolt. You can't start the bolt without the magnet stick holding it in place for you because there's not enough room in there to manipulate the bolt by hand from the engine bay access. On the scale of fun, this job is so very VERY fun. My NTK sensor did not fit very well. It caused the issue of not lining everything up well and needing to handstart it (I have plenty swivel sockets and none worked to start the bolt). I set up and did the paracord trick when removing the sensor but didn't end up actually using the cord to install the sensor or wires - great trick though. Great video!

@markcarpenter36003 жыл бұрын
Check engine codes unfortunately the code for the crank position sensor is the same as the cam position sensor. Change the cam position sensor first, it has moving parts and it is easy. Then go to the crank position sensor. 20" extension with a short wobble (not a swivel) extension can get to this bolt from below. I can't remember the size, but it is an SAE bolt not metric. The ratchet end of the extension will be near the transfer case. The cardboard sticker on the tip of the sensor sets the depth of the sensor. If I remember correctly you will need to remove the front driveline. It takes about an hour to replace the sensor. This is serviceable from underneath the vehicle. This is one part you want OEM from the dealer.

To check odometer trouble code readout.....Turn ignition on till odometer miles shows mileage, then turn off right away....do that three times, each time make sure mileage shows, then turn back to off. Do three times, if there is a code to show, it should show after third time. If there's no trouble code, no code will show. Worked on my 1999 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0. I had, have bad crankshaft sensor showing P0302.

20" extension with a short wobble extension (not a swivel) can get to this bolt from below. I can't remember the size, but it is an SAE bolt, not metric. The ratchet end of the extension will be near the transfer case. The cardboard sticker on the tip of the sensor is essential, it sets the depth of the sensor. This is not a junkyard part, spend the extra money and get from the dealer. This is one of the parts that you want new and genuine OEM. My local jeep dealer has the cardboard stickers. If I remember correctly removing the front driveline may be helpful. This is one of the sensors that I carry on the trail along with all of the throttle body sensors and the cam position sensor. Something you have to do when you're in DVNP 5 hours from the edge of pavement. My 200 mile AAA tow plan is as worthlessas the paper it is written on here. It can be replaced in about an hour on the trail. If the engine and transmission are separated it has to come out before and be replaced after they are joined. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKvFaaybf7-Gh7s kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4eZmJuZlt5mppo P.S. it is a one man job LOL!
