Nice video. 67 GTO. No gas at fuel filter. Looks like fuel pump

My 66 cutlass stoped running this weekend. It’s not getting gas. So looks like I’m going to be replacing my pump. Question on my car between the carb and pump is one of them big metal filters. I see your is just a gas line straight to carb. Should I eliminate the filter?

I later put a filter in line for sure. I believe this video was made weeks before I turned motor over for first time.

I am rebuilding my 1976 GMC Motorhome (Olds 455) and, since it was illegally sold, stolen and then vandalized, what are the specs of the upper fuel pump bolt? They took that for some reason, along with the ten-year-old fuel pump.

Which version of the Olds 400 is in your vehicle, the early or late one?

Its the early one. The E block from 66-67 if I remember correctly.

Quick question: do you need to worry about the lever/rod falling out of place when removing/installing the fuel pump? I see other videos talking about putting a bolt in place of the side to hold the lever in place while removing/installing. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. I’m about to switch mine out on a ‘74 gmc and don’t want to start before figuring out this issue since there is practically no room and I can’t jack mine up due to being on a hill. Gotta do it right the first time.

The lever was pretty firm. Just pay attention how you remove it and just put new one back in the same way that way it rest on or below cam like it should. This fuel pump lever rests on top of the cam.

No. The Olds does NOT have a fuel pump pushrod like a chevy does. The pump arm is permanently attached to the pump housing, and it rides directly on an eccentric that's bolted to the front of the cam, on the timing gear. There is NOTHING to fall out or get displaced. Depending on the position of the eccentric when the engine stops, it CAN be hard to get the pump lined back up flush with the block if when the engine stops the eccentric just happens to be on its high point for the arm of the pump. In that case, the arm will be under all the pump's spring tension, and the it can be difficult to overcome the spring and get the pump back flush with the block in order to get the bolts back in it. IF this happens, simply manually turn the engine over exactly 1 rotation, and the arm will then be on the low side of the eccentric, and there will now be no spring tension to fight against. Other than that, it's REAL simple to swap the pump. Remove the fuel lines, remove the 2 bolts going through the pump, and pull it out. Simple.

are you doing this from under the car or under the hood?
@oldsguysgarage

It was a little bit of both. If ac compressor is in place it may be easier to come from underneath.

@@oldsguysgarage Thanks! I'm trying to fix what I believe is a fuel pump issue myself on my 69 firebird, the original owner put a 455 in it so there isnt much room to work from the top. waiting for my friend to bring his jack over so I can remove the part and order new parts. Any advice you can give this rookie?

@@drkmcguire Best of luck. the fuel pump should just be two bolts, top and bottom plus a gasket.

@@drkmcguire Is it an Olds, or a Pontiac 455? They are both different.. and have been both known to be transplanted into Firebirds.
