Replacing a double glazed unit in a PVC window. The glass unit was blown and had water in between the panes of the double glazing. Just a quick film on how to repair by replacing the glass.

Great video making it look very simple and giving confidence to lots of DIYers - thanks, mate. I'm sure if the many critics of your use of a standard hammer actually listened to your advice, they'd realise you're calling out the options of a nylon one and that you just happen to be doing it this way - and done right, there's actually no impact on the glass at all. These will probably be some of the same people who use a chisel to get under a nail head to lift it or a pozi screwdriver to tighten a Phillips screw though, each to their own!

Using a hammer to hit your finish work is just crazy

I did it so you can see that it can be done without damage, if you are careful.

Im in South Carolina. Im facing down this situation right now. I need ten windows replaced and im going to do it just like you did. I buy my houses cash fix them up and flip them. So if I bust something , tough shit Ill fix it:) I thought you handled it great. I may use a wood block to tap my trim back in or Ill take my rubber mallet I use to install my engineered hardwood floors. But I found a place in Washington State that will make and ship these windows 30" x 30" 5/8" for $110.00 American. which I think is very reasonable. Thank you!

I wondered why he used a metal claw hammer, though he was a bit thick myself but he did the job.

Usually you would use a hammer with a nylon head, won't mark the plastic. Used an ordinary hammer to show it can be done. Just put a bit of tape round it and should not scratch the glass or damage the plastic. Be gentle though 👍

I've NEVER had dp glass come out that easy. I always have to have access to the outside of the sash so as to be able to cut the glass free from either the adhesive or the double-sided tape that holds the unit in.

I have never had this problem. Will keep my eyes open for similar. Thanks for sharing your experience.

what sort of seals are on the window frame?
@crazypigs1002 жыл бұрын
what are the bits that hold the window in called. i need the rubber seal replaced. where do i get the part and what would you expect that to cost. I have a dude quoting me 180 to replace a window and then now wanting to charge me a further 40 quid for the slats that hold it in because the rubber is damage. Do you think I'm getting fleeced? The window is just a backdoor window.

Hi pal. Top video. My bearding is on the outside of frame because... Would this be the same method how you opened the bearding from the inside... Thank you.
@handymancraftglasgow4 жыл бұрын
The beading on the outside is quite rare so double check. It should come off in the same way 👍

Is this the same process for patio door?
@handymancraftglasgow7 жыл бұрын
It was for mine. A lot more glass so can be heavy. Be careful of the door handles they can get in the way.

where did u get the glass. tried searching but cant get a supplier
@EarthCareOptions8 жыл бұрын
Try a local double glazing company. Most will supply you with the glass if you ask. Very difficult, if not impossible to source on the Internet. I certainly had no luck. Some local glaziers may be able to supply you as well.

initially, did you 1st remove the old glass to measure dimension?
@handymancraftglasgow6 жыл бұрын
That's the best way to get an accurate measurement. The difficult measurement is the thickness. To get an accurate measurement you need to pop out the glass. If you have more than one to replace and you are sure they are the same thickness you can measure from the outside edge of the removable beading to the same on the opposite side and take off 10mm. That will give you the dimensions of the glass.

where did you get the glass?
@handymancraftglasgow8 жыл бұрын
+Daryll Griffiths I get it from a local double glazed window company. Most companies that make double glazed windows will be able to make the glass up for you. Some glaziers can make them up for you as well. You need the size of the glass, thickness, colour of the spacer between the panes.

From a window glass company you idiot

@@carlosreyna2246 You would think, but many I contacted wouldn't deal with Non Trade so it really wasn't an idiotic question. Given I'm not a million miles away from this youtuber geographically, asking where he managed to source it made sense.

you should use a rubber hammer using a normal hammer you can damage the glass.
@handymancraftglasgow4 жыл бұрын
A rubber hammer is definitely the best tool for the job 👍

using a hammer to fit glass is wrong you need a plastic head / rubber mallet to remove risk of a scratch also this was a tilt and turn window and realistically needed toe and healing.

The water inside between glass It can take apart then cleaning glass and cutting new metal spacer then reassembled with new butyl sealant. I did at my father's window it look great. If it look white fog it cannot cleaning then it had to replaced with new one.

Pretty much making a new window. Sounds like the only thing you re-used was the glass.

You're using a metal hammer to run down glass? Talk about cowboy. Get a rubber hammer for god sake
@handymancraftglasgow7 жыл бұрын
Yup you can also use a rubber mallet. Never had a problem with the hammer.

Metal hammer will scratch the glass and damage the beads - should always use plastic glazing mallet.

Handyman Craft Glasgow as with a timber gate pvc-u and aluminium side opening windows as well as doors need cross bracing to transfer the load from the top corner on the lock side to the bottom corner on the hinge side. This is done by using the glass as the cross brace by toe and heel packing.
@handymancraftglasgow7 жыл бұрын
+cardiffpicker1 absolutely right. Should have made more of a point in the video. Will see if I can add some Info. Thanks for the comment and taking the time to add details 👍
